Page 2 |December 22 2019 PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

4th Sunday of Advent, December 22, 2019 Christmas is only three days away. This season of joy could also bring a lot of fear and stress. Je- sus Christ is the reason for this joy and in him, all fear and stress give way to peace and strength. In today’s gospel, we read how the birth of Jesus took place. When Joseph was told that Mary was with a child, he felt confused and afraid. The angel of the Lord said to him, “Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:20). Joseph accepted the words of the angel and took Mary home and so came Jesus. It was not only Joseph who was afraid, but Mary was also afraid when he heard the greeting of the angel. She was told not to be afraid. She listened and accepted the angel’s mes- sage and she conceived in her womb the Savior of the world whose birth we celebrate at Christ- mas. The Shepherds were also afraid when the angel told them of the birth of Jesus. Again, the angel calmed their fears because a savior was born for them.

The Christ that is born for us is also Emmanuel, a name which means “God with us.” This is very significant. It means that the coming of Christ affirms God’s presence among his people and that God will not abandon his people. When we experience fears and worries, it is important to keep in mind that God is around us and that God surrounds us. We all have fears but knowing that God is with us in faith, our fears give way to certain assurance, peace and joy.

For parishioners who lost a dear one during this year, the absence of that loved one may be felt even more during this season which could bring about sorrow, fear and stress. God’s message for you is “be not afraid.” Hold on to your faith in God and celebrate the birth of the messiah who assures us that he is always with us. Holding on to the faith that God is with us no matter what is very important.

Blessing Tree: As Christmas approaches, people’s hope increase. Those who are hoping for a special gift begin to anticipate opening their Christmas gifts. What a disappointment if the anticipated gift is not what we receive! Even when we receive the gift we really want or desire for Christmas, we soon find out that what we thought will satisfy us forever does not. We soon move on to seeking something else. However, putting our hope in the reason for the season, Jesus, the Emmanuel, satisfies our inner yearning. That is why we find joy in bringing joy to others through our giving.

Through your generous support of our Blessing Tree program, we were able to meet the hopes and needs of some children and families in our community who otherwise would not have gifts for Christmas. Thank you, dear generous parishioners, for purchasing those gifts. On Saturday, December 14th, we distributed the gifts from the Blessing Tree to those families in need. I thank also the volunteers and our social service director for such a wonderful organization of the program. This is what Christmas is about, sharing the joy of the newborn King. The joyful giving by parish- ioners is not limited to Christmas time and so I am grateful to you all. May you all experience the joy and blessings of being a cheerful giver!

Christmas Schedule: Christmas day is this week. By now you must have finished decorating your home and wrapped all gifts ready for the feast. If you do things in the last minute, you still have a day or two to get everything ready for Christmas. Our Christmas schedules are as follows: Christmas vigil Masses on Tuesday, December 24th at 4pm (Children’s Mass) and 7pm; Midnight Mass at Midnight; Christmas Day Masses at 8:30am, 10:00am, in English, and 12pm in Spanish. Come celebrate Jesus, our Emmanuel, God with us. Please consider being extra generous in your support of our parish and her numerous programs during this holy season. Thank you again for all that you do for our parish.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! Fr. Felix I. Osasona, MSP Pastor

* Reading 1: The Virgin shall bear a Son and call Him Emmanuel. Isaiah is sent to tell King Ahaz that God will give him a sign of His favor. God did not manifest the sign for another 700 years, but the prophecy bears witness that God’s plan to save us was prepared and prom- ised centuries before it was fulfilled. Thus the Lord instructs us to hope, even if He seems not to hear, even when times are tough and your prayers seem to go unanswered. Hope enables us to trust in God’s promise, to rely upon Him and not upon ourselves. Hope is a steadfast anchor which keeps us firmly grounded in God’s promise: persevere in doing God’s Will in good works, love God and neighbor, and the glory of Heaven can be ours. Emmanuel, “God with us,” walks with us. Be aware of this great grace. Be aware of His Presence at all times, but especially in the Eucharist, when He is Present Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. God indeed is with us in an extraordinary way. As we complete our preparations to receive Christ at Christmas, let us give thanks that God is with us. * Reading 2: We are called to be holy and obedient to the Faith. St. JPaul compactly reviews salvation history, showing how Jesus was foretold by the prophets, came among us in power, and reigns now in Heaven after establishing His Church. We are called to be holy and to witness to the Faith we have received. We are responsible for handing on the Gospel. Jesus’ Great Commission was not only to His apostles, but for each one of us: by virtue of our baptism, we are incorporated into the Body of Christ and have therefore received the grace of apostleship. Go out to all the world and tell the Good News! Know your Faith, love it, and live it. * Gospel: Jesus, Emmanuel: God is with us to save us. St. Matthew relates the narrative of how the birth of our Savior came about. The prophecy from our First Reading is repeated, that the Virgin shall name her Son Emmanuel: God is with us (“immanu” is the Greek form of Hebrew meaning “with us” and “el” in Hebrew refers to God). We know Him as Jesus, whose Name means: God saves. What we call our Savior in English, Jesus, is derived from the Hebrew Yehoshua – “Yeh” short for Yahweh, the unspeakable Name of God; and “shua” for “deliverance, rescue, salvation.” “What’s in a name?” Shakespeare famously asked in Romeo and Juliet, shrugging off the significance of the name to concentrate on the qualities of the person. In the case of Jesus, His Name reveals His mission and His character. Have a very merry and blessed Christmas! Celebrate the astounding love of God in coming to live among us, to save us from bondage to sin, and to open the gates of Heaven to those who believe in Him.
