Set on writing a dissertation on slavery, and convinced that a study of disability would have too few primary sources, I put aside my interest in this text. However, the paper did awaken me to the idea of working on a topic that had not been so thoroughly studied as slavery. Encouraged by Dana Sajdi’s fascinating work on a Chester Beatty Library manuscript of an 18th-century Damascene barber’s local history, I leafed through the Chester Beatty manuscript catalogue in the hope of fi nding a singular source on which I could build a similarly interesting study. To my amazement, I stumbled across A. J. Arberry’s entry for MS 3838, Ibn Fahd’s 950/AD 1543 ‘treatise on the affl ictions suffered by famous schol- ars’. Only then did I begin to think a study of disability could be a possi- bility. With the support of the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School and the International Institute, I arranged a visit to the Chester Beatty Library in the summer of 2005. Dr Elaine Wright, curator of the library’s Islamic collections, was of immeasurable assistance during my stay there and granted permission to use a library image as the cover art. My thesis adviser, Dr Kathryn Babayan, introduced me to al-Badrī’s poetry anthology, which quickly led me to the other writers featured in this study. I am immensely grateful for her continued support and mentorship. Support from the National Endowment of the Humanities allowed me to work under the supervision of Dr Monica Green and Dr Emilie Savage- Smith in London in the summer of 2009. These two experts in medieval medical history helpfully introduced me to Latin and Arabic medical lit- erature on balādhur and baldness, which has strengthened Chapters 2 and 5.   • A Chronological Particular Timeline of Near East and Europe History
    Introduction This compilation was begun merely to be a synthesized, occasional source for other writings, primarily for familiarization with European world development. Gradually, however, it was forced to come to grips with the elephantine amount of historical detail in certain classical sources. Recording the numbers of reported war deaths in previous history (many thousands, here and there!) initially was done with little contemplation but eventually, with the near‐exponential number of Humankind battles (not just major ones; inter‐tribal, dynastic, and inter‐regional), mind was caused to pause and ask itself, “Why?” Awed by the numbers killed in battles over recorded time, one falls subject to believing the very occupation in war was a naturally occurring ancient inclination, no longer possessed by ‘enlightened’ Humankind. In our synthesized histories, however, details are confined to generals, geography, battle strategies and formations, victories and defeats, with precious little revealed of the highly complicated and combined subjective forces that generate and fuel war. Two territories of human existence are involved: material and psychological. Material includes land, resources, and freedom to maintain a life to which one feels entitled. It fuels war by emotions arising from either deprivation or conditioned expectations. Psychological embraces Egalitarian and Egoistical arenas. Egalitarian is fueled by emotions arising from either a need to improve conditions or defend what it has. To that category also belongs the individual for whom revenge becomes an end in itself. Egoistical is fueled by emotions arising from material possessiveness and self‐aggrandizations. To that category also belongs the individual for whom worldly power is an end in itself.

    ISSN 1522-5668 Journal of Religion & Society The Kripke Center Volume 14 (2012) “Critical Islam” Debating/Negotiating Modernity Dilyana Mincheva, Trent University Abstract The intellectual discourse of Muslim elites born and educated in a Western environment gives impetus, sometimes not entirely consciously, to the debate on the critical potential of the public sphere. This new Islamic critique suggests that the Western public spheres lose their cohesive force and political thrust and practically dismantle into fragmented, disparate, and alienated discourses under increasing transnational pressures because they have never questioned their normative secular underpinnings. This new critical insight implies new modes of public participation and occasions a transformation of the traditional notion of public sphere as it has been described by prominent Western theoreticians of modernity (such as Jurgen Habermas). The debate between the classical Western approach to “public sphere” and modernity and the “new” Islamic critique of it (via Tariq Ramadan, Fethi Benslama, and Malek Chebel) is at the center of this paper. “Critical Islam” and the Public Sphere: Defining the Limits of Modernity [1] The relationship between reason embodied in contingent historical practices and reason as a universal category, has never ceased to be an important topic in the critical theories of the various disciplines within philosophy and social science. The discussion on the function of religion intensifies the theoretical debates for a number of reasons. On the one hand, reason has been recognized in the West as an internal purpose of all religions ever since the European Enlightenment’s assertion of the Cartesian rationality and the Kantian autonomy. On the other hand, in the modern age, deeply marked by the complex cultural, economic, and political processes of globalization, secularization, and cultural homogenization, religion appears to be the only refuge of difference, the true sanctuary of values and authenticity.

Conceptualizing this feature as “heterodoxy,” earlier Turkish scholarship sought the roots of Alevi religiosity in Turkish traditions which traced back to Central Asia, on the one hand, and in medieval Anatolian Sufi orders such as the Yasawi, Bektashi, Qalandari, and Wafaʾi, on the other. A new line of scholarship has critiqued the earlier conceptualization of Alevis as “heterodox” as well as the assumption of Central Asian connections.

The thesis covers 603 years of historical events that coincided during the time the Ottoman ruled Mesopotamia, until the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003. The thesis is divided into four chapters, in which I address the factors that aggravated to deteriorate the Iraqi national unity. The historical events include the Ottoman-Persian rivalry that lasted for more than three centuries, and the outcomes that precipitated the Iraqi national identity to devolve into sectarianism. Furthermore, the thesis covers the modern history of Iraq during the period that Britain invaded Iraq and appointed the Hashemite to act on their behalf.

    “The strategic use of Islam in Afghan politics” in Religion and politics in South Asia, edited by Ali Riaz. New York: Routledge, 2010. The Strategic Use of Islam in Afghan Politics Abdulkader H. Sinno I argue in this chapter that the strategic use of religion plays an additive role in the ability of some Afghan political actors to legitimize their actions, mobilize support, undermine rivals, attract foreign aid, and control populations. Not all Afghan political actors can make use of religious language or sanction—only those who transcend divisions within a local, tribal, sectarian, ethnic or national space and do not have a history of behavior considered “un-Islamic” can benefit from its advantages within that space, but not necessarily beyond it. These actors can aggressively leverage an Islamic agenda. Examples of such actors include several mujahideen organizations in the 1980s and the Taliban during their initial rise in 1994-2001. Others, who do not have this kind of Islamic legitimacy, have to react to the strategic use of Islam by those who do. They may choose to adopt a strongly anti-Islamic agenda (e.g. People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan before 1985), make symbolic gestures to counter the de- legitimization process (PDPA between 1985 and 1992), or be pressed to accommodate religious demands (Hamid Karzai 2004-today). In all cases, such actors are at a strong disadvantage in a very conservative and religious Muslim country. The strategic use of religion may not be necessary for Afghan political actors to be successful and it is certainly not sufficient for them to outperform their rivals.

    Chapter 15 Religious Extremism (Ghuluw), Ṣūfism and Sunnism in Safavid Iran: 1501–1722* It is a well-known fact that pre-Safavid Iran was predominantly Sunnī. It is also common knowledge that the fifteenth century was a period marked by the flourishing of a number of millenarian movements. These religious move- ments, the last of which gave birth to the Safavid empire, combined Ṣūfism with Shiʿite “extremism” (Ghuluw). However, what is not so commonly appreci- ated is that beyond the recognition of the Twelve Imāms, the fifteenth century Shiʿite Ghuluww had little in common with Twelver Shiʿism or the doctrine of the Imāmī sect. Furthermore, though Imāmī scholarship developed freely— notably in Ḥilla—contrary to expectation, there is no evidence of mission- ary activity and spread of Imāmī Shiʿism in Iran in the period preceeding the establishment of the Safavid empire.1 According to the earliest chronicle of his rule, when, in Tabriz in 1501/907, despite the trepidation of his entourage, Shāh Ismāʿīl proclaimed Twelver Shiʿism the state religion, that city, like the rest of Iran, was predominantly Sunnī. It was only after much searching that a book containing the basic tenets of Imāmī Shiʿism, the Qawaʿid al-Islām by Ibn al-Muṭahhar al-Ḥillī (1250–1326) was found in the library of a qāḍī, and was made the basis of the new religion.2 Not even in Kashan, referred to by the sources as the dar al-muʾminīn (realm of the faithful; a designation reserved for the old centers of Imāmī Shiʿism), was a competent Shiʿite jurist to be found for over a decade.3 * Originally published as “Religious Extremism (Ghuluww), Sufism and Sunnism in Safavid Iran: 1501–1722,” Journal of Asian History, 15.1 (1981): 1–35.

The recent attacks aimed at various Western countries have proven that the radicalization of Islamism is now closely tied to the issue of terrorism. This recent radicalization is a common feature in Western societies which find themselves challenged by homegrown as well as international terrorism. The challenge requires countries to find a way to implement efficient counter-terrorist measures.
