LIMITED MEMBERSHIP On May 18, 1929, limited membership was extended to African-American high schools desiring to join the IHSAA with the understanding that “--such shall extend the privilege of par cipa ng in single athle c games and contests with other high schools belonging to the IHSAA but not in meets and tourneys in which more than two teams par cipate except in meets and tourneys in which only the teams from the high schools of the same city par cipate.”

This type of membership was discon nued in 1942 when full membership was opend to all public, parochial, Afri- can-American and ins tu onal high schools of the State oﬀ ering and maintaining three or four years of high school work.

MODIFIED MEMBERSHIP In 1939, “modiﬁ ed membership” was extended to any public high school oﬀ ering and maintaining less than three years of high school work “with the understanding that such membership shall extend the privilege of par cipa ng in single athle c games and contests with other schools belonging to the IHSAA but not in meets and tourneys in which more than two teams par cipate except in meets and tourneys in which only the teams from the high schools of the same city par cipate”.

Modiﬁ ed membership was discon nued in 1964 when junior membership and preparatory membership were extended.

2 ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP In 1951, Associate membership was extended to any high school accredited by the State Department of Educa on and opera ng strictly as a boarding school with the understanding that: 1. they may par cipate in single athle c games and contests and invita onal tourneys and meets, but not in any tourneys or meets conducted for the purpose of determining an oﬃ cial state championship in the IHSAA. 2. they are bound by IHSAA rules and regula ons with the excep on that a student who changes schools without a corresponding change of residence on the part of his parents is eligible as to residence immediately, provided there is no undue inﬂ uence involved in any way. 3. they will not share in the distribu on of IHSAA surplus funds or tourney ckets.

PREPARATORY MEMBERSHIP Began in 1964 -- discon nued in 1974. Available only to schools having grades 9 and 10, or 10 that will become eligible for full membership within a two-year period.

JUNIOR MEMBERSHIPS Junior memberships were extended in 1964 “to any school accredited by the State Department of Educa on off ering the ninth grade, but not eligible for full, preparatory or associate membership”. Such shall extend the privilege of par c- ipa ng in single athle c games, contests, tourneys and meets with other junior members. Membership shall also permit teams from junior memb ers composed of ninth grade students to compete against teams composed of ninth and/or tenth grade students from full, preparatory and associate mem bers in single games, contests, tourneys and meets without special restric ons as to the number of teams entered, trial runs or geographical loca on within the state. Schools holding junior membership are not eligible to enter teams in state tourneys or meets. It must be clearly understood that such member ship is a membership in the IHSAA that requires the principal to subscribe to all of the rules and regula- ons of the Associa on. Such members may share in the distribu on of ckets to the state fi nal championship basketball tourney and other state fi nal cha,npionship meets on a limited bases as determined by the Board of Control (Execu ve Commi ee).
