With 2018 being the first edition of the event, Lahti will be hosting at least Tourism - Detail three editions of the event until 2020. The 2018 edition, held on 30 June, saw 1,459 participants take part across an individual race and team relay. Participant and spectator tourism impact Outside of the race, an estimated 20,000 spectators attended the IRONMAN 70.3 Tourism spend in Lahti €1.76m event, with an additional 729 people attending, such as volunteers. Participants €0.44m Spectators €1.32m Based on the tourism survey, it was estimated that around 2,372 spectators travelled with the athletes, generating 4,330 bed nights in the city. Sporting - Detail The 1,459 individual participants were from 42 different nations with a continental reach of six. There were 1,110 male athletes and 349 female athletes. Overview GSI EVENT STUDY / NOKIAN TYRES IRONMAN 70.3 FINLAND 2018 Overview Event History The IRONMAN 70.3 event was first held in May 2006, and took place in Florida, Continental breakdown of IRONMAN USA. During the first year, the series was hosted 10 times across four continents: 70.3 events (2018) North America, South America, Europe and Oceania. In 2008, the number of races increased to 27 across five continents. In 2018, the IRONMAN 70.3 calendar included 97 races across six continents. 9 3 In 2018, North America will host the most events, with 37 IRONMAN 70.3 events. 37 Second to that, Europe will host a total of 25 events. Looking across IRONMAN 14 70.3 events from 2010 to 2018, North America has hosted the most events (305), whilst Europe is second (137), and Asia follows (61). All Rights Reserved. GSI EVENT STUDY / NOKIAN TYRES IRONMAN 70.3 FINLAND 2018 Overview Event Format The IRONMAN 70.3 is a triathlon event which requires athletes to swim, cycle and run. The ‘70.3’ refers to the total distance, in miles, which is covered during the event. The race itself lasts one day, but pre-competition events and a post- competition award ceremony are often held on the surrounding days. In the IRONMAN 70.3 event athletes swim 1.2 miles (1.9km), complete a 56-mile (90km) cycle and finish with a 13.1 mile (21.1km) run. Each of these segments is half the distance of the original IRONMAN triathlon. Time taken to complete the triathlon varies on numerous factors such as level of the athlete, the terrain, or the weather during the race. Yet the typical range can be from around four hours completed by elite athletes, to the imposed race cut- off, which normally occurs at eight and a half hours after start time. The elite athletes starting in the event have an earlier start time, and are later followed by a rolling age-group start. However, in recent years, Finland’s ski jumpers have achieved disappointing results in the World Cup, and suffered from injuries and retirements. Many young and talented jumpers prematurely ended their careers 5 to 10 years ago, as they did not have the opportunity to reach the national team which was very competi- tive. Now Finland is lacking talent at the top level, and not enough young jumpers are trained. This thesis examines the current situation with regard to ski jumping in Finland in order to provide solutions for preventing the decline in the number of jumpers and attracting more children to try the sport. The purpose of this thesis is to identify realistic solutions to imple- ment rapidly and at the lowest possible cost. Raising the interest of young children is a priori- ty but it is also important to keep the motivation high for jumpers between 14 and 20 years old. The other objective of this paper is to provide solutions for increasing the number of spectators during national and regional competitions.

The aim of this study is to discover the strengths and weaknesses of these two cities as sport tourism destinations and find out how important a role sport tourism has in the marketing material produced by these cities. Additionally, this thesis provides some ideas on how to develop sport tourism further in the aforementioned cities. This thesis aims to highlight the benefits sport tourism has and encourage cities to develop it further. Sport tourism has been identified to be an upcoming tourism market with significant economical potential that benefits from the increasing number of studies done on the topic. The theoretical section of this thesis introduces the many aspects of sport tourism as well as those of destination marketing. This theory is applied to the study of finding out what are the biggest advantages and disadvantages are which Innsbruck and Lahti have as sport tourism destinations in Europe. The research for this study was made by using qualitative methods. Structured interviews with tourism professionals provide a base for a good part of this research while observations and benchmarking were also done in both Innsbruck and Lahti.

    FINNISH OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS Paavo Aaltonen (1919–1962) 1948 Gymnastics, team competition M 1948 Gymnastics, vault 1948 Gymnastics, pommelled horse Paavo Aaltonen won three Olympic gold medals in 1948. He was still only the second most successful Finnish gymnast at the London Games. Aaltonen rose to the elite of Finnish gymnastics in the late 1930’s. During the war he maintained his fitness by training on self-made apparatuses behind the frontline. In 1948 Aaltonen won a total of four Olympic medals at the London Games: gold in team competition, bronze in the individual all-around event and individual gold in both vault and pommelled horse. In the last-mentioned event he tied for gold with his two team-mates Veikko Huhtanen and Heikki Savolainen. The three-way tie for gold by athletes from a single nation remains a unique occasion in Olympic history. Aaltonen’s feats were still somewhat overshadowed by Huhtanen who also won three gold medals including the individual overall title. In 1950 Aaltonen won gold in horizontal bar at the World Championships in Basel, Switzerland, thus becoming the first athlete of the Finnish Workers’ Sport Federation to win a world title. Two years later in Helsinki he won his last Olympic medal as member of the home nation’s bronze medal team. Toimi Alatalo (1929–2014) 1960 Cross-country skiing, 4 x 10 km M Toimi Alatalo first came to the fore in 1956 when he won the Finnish championship title in 15 kilometres. He missed the Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympic Games that year due to foot injuries.
