  • The Remarkable Story of a Rebel Artist, Her Mysterious Death And
Observer Culture November 30, 2015 by Guelda Voien The Remarkable Story of a Rebel Artist, Her Mysterious Death and Cult Resurgence Justice, finally, for the works of Cuban-American artist and 1980s rising star Ana Mendieta The first week of December, a mesmerizing body of artwork rarely seen and almost forgotten will go on display in Miami, at the public collection of Rosa de la Cruz, one of the country’s leading Contemporary art collectors. The pieces include images of the mud- smeared body of the artist; other works show her sweating blood from her pores. This dark imagery foretold her demise, some fans of the artist maintain. On the 30-year anniversary of her death, a powerful cult is growing around photographer Ana Mendieta. (Photo: The Estate of Ana Mendieta and filmmaker Ana Mendieta. Famous for Collection LLC, Courtesy Galerie Lelong New York) some years mostly for the way she died, and forgotten for many more, her works are being rediscovered, exhibited around the U.S. and are climbing at auction. In the 1980s, if you could find a Mendieta, it was maybe $2,000, said Phillips auction house Worldwide Co-Head of Contemporary Art August Uribe. Now the median price for a Mendieta is $40,000 to $50,000, he said, and one hit a record of $200,000 at Phillips. So, what’s fueling the rediscovery? In part, “I think that there is a renewed or new interest in the work of women artists [overall],” he said, and some of the new collectors of this work are women, he noted.

Title Lehi’s Vision of the Tree of Life: Understanding the Dream as Visionary Literature Author(s) Charles Swift Reference Journal of Book of Mormon Studies 14/2 (2005): 52–63, 74–75. ISSN 1065-9366 (print), 2168-3158 (online) Abstract One of the more striking and significant passages in the Book of Mormon is Lehi’s vision of the tree of life. It is often studied in terms of its content alone, with clarifying details illuminated by Nephi’s simi- lar vision. However, exploring this vision against the backdrop of ancient visionary literature can lead to greater appreciation of its literary richness while affording insights into its interpretation. Many nar- rative components of Lehi’s vision match the charac- teristic elements of visionary literature identified by biblical scholar Leland Ryken, including otherness, reversal of ordinary reality, transcendental realms, kaleidoscopic structure, and symbolism.

  • ANA MENDIETA- a SEARCH for IDENTITY a THESIS in Art History
ANA MENDIETA- A SEARCH FOR IDENTITY A THESIS IN Art History Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS by STEPHANIE LYNNE FINKELSTEIN B.A., Webster University, 2005 Kansas City, Missouri 2012 ANA MENDIETA- A SEARCH FOR IDENTITY Stephanie Lynne Finkelstein, Candidate for the Master of Arts Degree University of Missouri—Kansas City, 2012 ABSTRACT Ana Mendieta was a Cuban-American female artist, whose work was a continuing search for identity throughout her life. She often searched for her roots in the earth itself, using it directly in her art and with her own body. This “return to the earth” was a metaphor for her life on many levels. Mendieta refers back to the Earth as a sense of home, literally and figuratively, as a tie to feminism and her womanhood, and her bond with religion, particularly the pagan-inflected, Cuban Catholicism known as Santeria. Tying her body to the land is how she felt an abundance of power and found her real niche. Mendieta utilized the earth and the land for most of her artistic career, which spanned from roughly 1972 to 1985, when she fell to her untimely death at age 36. Many know her for her death rather than her life, as Carl Andre, famous minimalist artist and her husband, was accused but acquitted of pushing her out of their 34th story window to her demise. Mendieta’s art was often overshadowed- a problem many women artists encounter. Yet, Mendieta’s posthumous notoriety helped redress her ii artworks.

April 2017 Introduction The Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) established the Design Team Roster as an on-line resource that can be used by anyone seeking an artist for a project – community groups, business or property owners, schools, architecture firms, private developers or other public art programs. The Roster provides a pool of highly qualified artists, and increases the efficiency of the selection process. The intent of the roster is to provide users a range of artistic styles from which to select an artist that fits the needs of a particular project -- creating an art plan for a site; collaborating on early design along with having a budget to create artwork(s); identifying opportunities for other artists to provide design elements within the construction budget and/or complemented with public art funds; or, for creating a distinctive artwork for a site. These artist have demonstrated skills, experience and interest in commissioned projects. As you review this roster, please read the artists’ statement and view details of up to three past projects to get a feel for their work. You are strongly encouraged to visit the artists’ websites and social media outlets to further explore their practice.
