Newly crowned National Premier League NSW Men’s Premiers Rockdale Illinden have had a rebooted season to remember for the ages as the club scooped its first ever piece of NPL silverware. Leading the charge in Rockdale’s stunning season has been debutant senior coach Steve Zoric who too was elated with how his first season as first team coach unfolded. After winning the 2020 NPL NSW Men’s Premiership in thrilling circumstances on the final day of play against the North Shore Mariners last weekend, the former Rockdale youth coach has set his sights firmly on their massive semi-final clash against staunch rivals Sydney Olympic this Saturday evening at the Ilinden Sports Centre. “This weekend I am expecting a blockbuster match with both teams filled with quality across the park. “Uro has had a very difficult year due to COVID-19 “Sydney Olympic are a very experienced and affecting the family business and difficulty in balancing accomplished squad with a lot of fire power in the the business, family and football. front third. “Initially, Urosevski could not commit 100% due to “My thoughts are that this game will be won on the the added load in working the business and having team that is defensively stronger on the day keeping in a young family but his passion for football, club and mind that midfield control will also contribute to who community ensured that he would again take part will be successful in getting to the Grand Final. which he has been instrumental to the clubs success “Even though this will go down to the wire, I have this season. great confidence in that we have shown enough “As a coach, it’s has been an honour to work with a ability and character to win this game and earn a spot player of his ability and drive to always, even with his in the main dance.” achievements, in improving his game. We are disappointed we fell short however there is still the Championship trophy to fight for and all of our attention is focused on winning that to cap off a strong season. “I was obviously gutted with the penalty miss and drawing the game but that’s all part of football. “I’ve had a good run from the penalty spot and converted all of them in the last three years so this one just wasn’t meant to be. I’ll learn from it and move on.” Traditionally, matches against Rockdale always prove to be thrilling ones and Saturday evening’s encounter is sure to be just that as the Ilinden Sports Centre will play host to a blockbuster affair. “Rockdale is a strong team and Ilinden is always

Marcus Beattie was the talk of the town at “With regards to the Premiership, we got so Wollongong last weekend when he notched close with just the goal difference being the up his first ever memorable hat-trick with the margin, so a little disappointing to not get there club in the Wollongong Wolves’ 5-2 round 11 in the end, but I feel like that just gives us even victory over Manly United. more motivation to go out there and win the Grand Final now. James which has pleased coach Luke Wilkshire.

Standing in their way for a place in this year’s 2020 NPL NSW Men’s Grand Final will be a hungry Sydney United 58 outfit full of experienced stars of their own keen to spoil the Wolves’ party at their temporary home ground.

“It’s a massive game against Sydney United 58 this weekend there’s no doubt about that.

“We know how strong they are across the park, so we need to remain focused for the full ninety minutes and if we do that, then I really feel like we have the quality to cause some damage.

“These one-off semi-finals are always going to be tough, but we will be ready to go mark my words.

“United 58 are a quality team and have shown that throughout the past few seasons. The likes of Antelmi, Sim, MacDonald all possess quality but they have dangerous players all over the park so I feel like if you focus on taking out one of the boys, then the others will step up to cause damage so we will need to be focused for the whole game – It’s a big game and will be raring to get the job done.”

“They have some obvious threats going forward, but we have the quality to make it difficult for them in that area of the pitch – we too have been solid going forward the other way so its going to be a quality match full of excitement that’s for sure.”

Sydney United 58 temporarily led the NPL NSW Men’s Premiership race during the final round but victory for Rockdale Ilinden all but secured their silverware much to the disappointment of Sim.

“Of course it would have been nice to finish on top and clinch the Premiership, we had a few slips up on the way and we knew it was going to be tight come the end of the season, we didn’t do enough at the end of the day.

“We still have an opportunity to claim some silverware with the Championship Title at stake but it all starts this Sunday as we hope we can get to the big dance first, taking out the Wolves in the process which by no means will be an easy match.”

The year itself has proved to be a healthy challenge for the former A-Leaguer as after the season recommenced once again following the COVID lockdown, the club also saw a new coach at the helm in Anthony Crea due to signing in Greece following Tony Popovic forming part of the coaching staff at Xanthi FC.

“It has just been positive to be able to get back out there and get some sort of a season in.
