I address those who know me well…with whom affectionate words were often exchanged in private audience and who revelaed to me all the hidden recesses of their hearts and minds in matters related to the service of G-d…

All of these compiled sayings are are answers to many questions posed continually by our fellows…seking advice, each according to their stature in the service of G-d, so as to receive guidance for themselves in the service of G-d.

Because time no longer permits me to reply to everyone individually on his particular query, and also because [the advice heard in private audience] may be forgotten, I have recorded all the replies to all the questions …

No longer will [they] need to press for a private audience for in these Likutei Amarim/Collected Discources [they] will find tranquility for [their] souls and true counsel on everything that [they] find difficult in the service of G-d. Text 2: Tanya, Chapter 1:

Every Jew [irrespective of his/her spiritual standing] possesses two souls, as it is written, “And neshamot (souls) I have made,”(Yeshayahu/Isaiah 57:16). These are two souls. One originates in non-holiness and this is the soul that is clothed in the blood of a human being to give life to the body; as it is written, “For the soul of the flesh is in the blood” (Vayikra/Leviticus 17:11) … From [this soul] stems all of the evil, as well as the naturally good traits, for this soul of non-holiness is derived from a neutral level of non-holiness which also contains good. Text 3: Tanya Chapter 2:

Text 6: Tanya Chapter 6:

The Almighty has created one thing opposite the other (Kohelet/Ecclesiastes 7:14).” Just as the G-dly soul consists of ten holy faculties, which correspond to the 10 supernal sefirot, and [the soul] is clothed in three holy garments, so too, the non-holy soul which is clothed in man’s blood, consists of ten “crowns of impurity.” Text 7: Tanya, Chapter 6:

When a person thinks [thoughts originating from the intelligence and emotions of the animal soul] or speaks words originating from them or does an act which serves or expresses them, then the thought in his brain, the words in his mouth and the power of action in his hands and other organs, are called “impure garments,” for these ten unclean categories [i.e. the intelligence and emotions of the animal soul] clothe themselves in these garments during the time of that action, speech, or thought.

Text 8: Tanya, Chapter 6:

Deeds …words and thoughts that are not directed to G-d, to His Will and His service, are all garments for the animal soul. For this is the meaning of the term sitra achra -literally “the other side,” i.e. [anything that is] not on the side of holiness.
