NATIONAL DIRECTOR OF WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY

In 1922, the first ever interstate women’s ice hockey tournament was held here in Melbourne. This weekend, nearly a century later and in the same city, over 100 women from all over Australia will compete in the 2018 Australian Women’s Tier 2 Showcase Series Finals. On behalf of Ice Hockey Australia, I take great pleasure in welcoming you to O’Brien Group Arena, ’s premier ice rink, for what promises to be an exciting tournament. I would like to thank O’Brien Group Arena for their valuable support and encouragement for all girls and women who play ice hockey. Thanks also to the players and support teams of the Melbourne Dragons, Canberra Pirates, Southern Stars (Queensland) and Adelaide Valkyries for their dedication and commitment to Tier 2. I also want to thank all our sponsors for their generous support and our loyal volunteers, families, friends and helpers who make this tournament so memorable. Your ongoing passion for ice hockey drives us to be our best. A special mention to all our on ice, and off ice officials, once again your valuable support is very much appreciated. We are honoured to have Tal Karp, Victoria’s Change Our Game Ambassador of the Office for the Women in Sport and Recreation, open our tournament. Having been an Olympic soccer player and captain of Melbourne Victory, she fully understands the barriers women face in sport and we are very grateful for her coming to support women’s ice hockey. We hope you thoroughly enjoy the 12 hours of ice hockey and watching our talented players playing the game they love. Look forward to seeing you in 2019.

Yours in hockey, Kylie Taylor Director of IHA Women’s Council

T2 COORDINATORS

As another exciting year comes to an end, it’s with great pleasure to welcome each athlete, parent/ guardian, coach, volunteer and supporter to the 2018 AWT2 Showcase Series Finals. Together, Dana and I are thrilled to be your 2018 National AWT2 Coordinators. All our teams share a common goal to win the perpetual Gower Cup. But this tournament is more than winning, it’s about the strong friendships that are formed with team mates and opponents from all over Australia. It’s about the experience and the interstate travel. The health benefits are wonderful as women are generally guilty of putting everyone else first before looking after themselves, especially when it comes to getting active and making physical activity a priority. So, go on, have fun and be a good teammate! It’s healthy for your values and your mind! Behind the scenes there are groups of hard-working passionate people who continue to dedicate their time to broaden the pathways for women ice hockey players in Australia. We extend a thank you to IHA and the State Associations for supporting our event and all the volunteers for giving up their precious time; without you the tournament wouldn’t have happened. With your continued support, we look forward to taking the AWT2 to a new level in 2019. Until then, we hope you enjoy the 2018 AWT2 Finals weekend here at O’Brien Group Arena.

In 1922, Victoria’s first Women’s interstate ice hockey team would battle for the Gower Cup, the first Australian women’s interstate trophy.
