Winter and Rosie By Ellie Hauck Tutor: Alexandra Henderson

I would like to dedicate this book to Olivier Dunrea because his book, Little Cub, inspired me to write this book.

Rosie is a little pup who lives alone outside of town. She is afraid to go into town because she is afraid of getting lost. Rosie has rosy red fur and is very shy.

Winter lives in the middle of town. She is a grown dog. She is not shy, but she is very alone and scared. She has a job and no friends.

Rosie tried to find food. She was unable to find food because she is too little to find food on her own. Rosie is lonely.

Winter could find food because she had a lot of money and could find food at the store. But, she is lonely.

Rosie decides to go into town so she can find someone to be with. She wandered around and got lost.

Winter was on her way home from the store and saw Rosie who looked lost. She asked Rosie if she was lost. Rosie said yes. Winter asks “Do you have a family?” Rosie said “No”. Winter asks “What is your name?” Rosie said “I am Rosie”. Winter says “I like that name, I will call you Rosie! Do you want to be mine?” “I like that” said Rosie.

Winter and Rosie become a family!

The Magical Flower

By MacKenzie Royall

Tutor: Joy Alford

Once upon a time, two sisters named Nixey and Taylor lived in a beautiful stone barn on a ranch in the middle of nowhere. They had a dog named Pluto, a cat named Snowflake, and a horse named Susan. One day, Pluto became very sick and was about to die. Since they lived in the middle of nowhere, there was no doctor around. Everyone was so sad. Taylor left the ranch to go look for a doctor. While Taylor was gone, Nixey found a mysterious paper with the words “A cure to illness” written at the top. She decided to follow the directions to see if she could save Pluto. The recipe called for one tree from the yard, one shirt with a picture of the dying animal’s best friend on it, one pair of pants the color of the animal’s enemy, water, and a chain. Nixey got all of the items together and mixed them in a big pot just like the instructions said to do. After everything was mixed, out came a beautiful tree that was covered in magical, turquoise flowers. Nixey put Pluto in a big bathtub filled with water and the magical flowers. Overnight, the cure healed Pluto completely! Everyone was so happy again until Nixey realized that Taylor never came home from looking for a doctor. When they went outside to look for her, they were so shocked and sad when they realized Taylor had turned into one of the trees in the yard! Nixey missed the part of the “cure to illness” at the bottom of the page that said: “If you do this, the dying animal will live, but the person you love the most will turn into a tree.”

Nyan Cat’s Big Win

By Michael Enriquez Tutor: Madison Yarish

When Nyan Cat was traveling in space, he saw a rocket that crashed on the moon. Nyan Cat followed the smoke from the rocket. Nyan Cat saw a new species and saw a panda, but it was a ninja! Nyan Cat gave rainbow soda to Ninja Panda and the soda gave Ninja Panda rainbow powers and rainbow vision. Meanwhile, penguins were learning to fly to the moon. The penguins used nuclear explosives to get to the moon and penguin helpers. Then they jumped off with a parachute and they threw dynamite so it can go high. So they did it and got to the moon in the nick of time because Bad Nyan Cat was attacking Nyan Cat and Ninja Panda. King Penguin told his penguins to attack the waffle, because they didn’t know what Bad Nyan Cat was. The penguins grabbed their nets and started tossing them at Bad Nyan Cat. Ninja Panda used his rainbow vision to attack Bad Nyan Cat. Nyan Cat flew around and shot rainbows out of his mouth. The rainbows made Bad Nyan Cat fade away, and he turned into an actual waffle! The waffle floated off into space and was never seen again. Then Nyan Cat, the penguins, and Ninja Panda all had a party with a penguin DJ and ate waffles.

Dragon Facts By Joandy Villegas Tutor: Spencer Cox Seashocker The Seashocker is a part of the tidal class. This dragon has two heads, and it only eats deep sea fish. This dragon can’t fly but it can swim under water. The Seashocker has lightning on its head, and the lightning attracts the main predator. The main predator is the Scaldron. If the Scaldron wants to eat the Seashocker, first the Scaldron has to blast it with its hot water. The Seashocker has a special way to defend itself. It touches its heads together and it makes a huge lightning bolt force field. If the Scaldron touches it, then it gets blown away very far and that is it about the Seashocker. Changewing This dragon is a part of the mystery class, which means we don't know how these guys work. We do know that these guys can turn invisible and that they love to copy whatever they see. They can shoot out acid from their mouths and hypnotize people when they look in their eyes. Triple Strike The Triple Strike is a part of the sharp class. This creature has three tails, but, when they are twirled together, the dragon looks like it has nine tails. The way to train this dragon is to make a clicking noise. When the dragon hears a clicking noise, it will get confused and think it's another triple strike calling for help. When it gets confused, the trainer goes towards the dragon and puts his hand out. Then, the triple strike will put his head on the trainer's hand, showing that the trainer is not a threat. Now the trainer can train the dragon. Speed Stinger The Speed Stinger is a part of the sharp class. These dragons do not like to be in the light because they are nocturnal dragons. They cannot fly, but they have evolved. When dragons evolve, they are able to run on water because they have webbing on their feet. They defend themselves from predators by the help of their tails because their tails can paralyze anything. When they are adolescents, their tails can only paralyze halfway, but when they are adults, they can paralyze all the way. Speed Stingers are extremely fast, and we know they can sting, so that's how they got their name Speed Stinger. The Sentinels The Sentinels are a part of the boulder class. These dragons only live in Vanaheim. They know every single dragon because that's where all the dragons go to spend their lives until they go to the afterlife. No human has ever left Vanaheim. When a human enters Vanaheim, the Sentinels don't bother them, but when the humans try to leave, the Sentinels move and they make sure they can't leave. They don't want them to leave because they don’t want them to tell anyone about this island. Night Fury The Night Fury is a part of the striker class. Every dragon in the striker class has very powerful blasting, is very fast, and is extremely smart. If you want to train a Night Fury, first you have to get its attention. Then, you have to earn its trust. The Night Fury can hear other dragons with using its sonic blast. Unlike other dragons, the Night Fury can build up its blast and make a powerful blast. The Night Fury is black so it owns the night.

Chapter 1: Who Was Mr. E?

There was a young boy who loved Halloween. One day, he was trick or treating and another boy asked what his name was. He said, “My name is E.” “No wonder your costume is scary, or should I say Mr. Evil!” E looked at the boy and said, “No my name is not Mr. Evil!”. The boy replied and said, “Yes, you are. Give me your candy!” Mr. E fought back and told the boy no. The boy looked at him and said “I’m not going to say it again, give it to me”. Mr. E got scared and gave the boy his candy. This happened every year. Since then, he has hated Halloween.

Chapter 2: Candy and a Curse

Mr. E hated Halloween so much that he began to play tricks on the R trick or treaters. But that’s not all! His whole house became permanently R I scary, with real zombies and robots scaring all the kids around! Bicycles moved by themselves, home-made gravestones were in the yard, and blood P was all on the floor. Some kids were scared, some were not. For the brave ones who went knocking on Halloween, they got the most disgusting candy! Even the good kids had to pay money for their own candy. Mr. E would hide real worms inside his “chocolate candy,” which was really mud. To get him back, the kids would give him spicy gum that set his mouth on fire. Because he was so mean, he was cursed with true evil. The only way to break the curse was to find friends and find the love of Halloween once again. He was convinced this would never EVER happen.

Chapter 3: Brave Kids Approach the House

Next Halloween came around, and two kids, Tiffany and Spencer, got lost and found themselves at Mr. E’s gloomy front porch. They knocked. He opened the door and asks them what they want. They explained that they got lost, and he immediately laughed, closing the door on their face. They waited a couple of minutes and knocked on the door again. He was very mad, and asked again what they wanted. They asked why he was so mad, that they just wanted him to go trick or treating with them. He was surprised, telling them the story of the bully. They told him he did not look scary; he fit right in with Halloween! He invited Spencer and Tiffany inside so they could all dress up scary and go trick or treating together!

Chapter 4: The Curse is Broken and a Friendship is Born

After they got their costumes together, they saw a book in Mr. E’s book library glowing. Letters were coming off the book, forming the words ‘HAPPY HALLOWEEN!’ The curse was broken! His house transformed into a beautiful mansion and, from then on, Mr. E was known to everyone as his real name, Mr. Evan! Little did he know, the kids were his bully’s children. (To be continued in book 2)

"Abandoned Museum"

By Aidan Tulloch Tutor: Kristen Daughtridge

There was a mad scientist who walked into an abandoned museum. He went to the potion section and stole some potions. The bottle was slippery, and it slipped out of his hands. When it hit the floor, there was smoke everywhere. The scientist looked in the smoke and saw a shadow of a clown. Then Coconut, the clown, pulled the scientist in the basement. In the basement, the scientist saw dolls everywhere on the ground. The scientist grabbed some potions and threw them at Coconut but he failed to get away. The scientist smacked Coconut in the nose and Coconut began spinning in circles and turned into pieces of candy. The scientist runs away but while he is running, the door closes and locks...

Jack and Annie Go to New Zealand

By Gianni Marchioni Tutor: Kelli Davison

Jack and Annie were in their tree house, and they found a book about New Zealand. The librarian told them to find a red X and bring the treasure back. They pointed to the first page in the book and went to New Zealand. They had to climb the secret mountain. They climbed Merk Mountain and, at the top of the mountain, they found a hole in the mountain. They went down the hole, and they found tunnels. While they walked in the tunnels, they found a treasure chest. Jack opened it and there was nothing in it. They kept walking, and they found a red X on the ground. They dug under the red X. They found a diamond under the red X. They touched the last page of the book, and they went back to the tree house. Jack hands the diamond to the librarian, and the librarian said, “Thank you.”

A Clone’s Story

By: Wyatt Royall Tutor: Jordan Denoncourt

Hi, my name is Bridge, and I am a clone. I have just left a clone training facility that trains clones to battle in the Grand Army of the Republic against the Separatist Army (Droid Army). I am going into battle by boarding a transport to Geonosis (the planet where the battle is taking place) to fight for the Republic.

The ride to the battlefield was very quiet, probably because, for most of the clones on the transport, this was their first battle, and they were nervous. I, myself, was nervous because I am pretty much bred to fight then die, so if you were me you would probably be scared too.

A few hours later, we hear an announcer over the speaker: “Attention passengers, we are rapidly losing altitude. Please remain calm, and proceed to the escape pods.” It is like everybody did the exact opposite, so I pretty much just went into an escape pod and left. Sadly, the planet below us was 98% water, so the escape pod had to be a boat for two hours. After a while, I was picked up by a rescue team, and transported to the battlefield. THE END

All About Dogs!

By Jayden Hoffman Tutor: Lea Glasmacher

We have learned all about dogs over the last couple of weeks. Dogs’ ancestors are wolves, foxes, and jackals. There are 32 species of dogs. The dogs’ purpose was to fight and hunt and guard and be a pet. A Dog’s Purpose is also a movie. Dogs need to eat, bathe, play and drink water. One of my questions was, “Why are some dogs not as smart as others?” They get it from humans because sometimes they are over-bred.

Dogs are my favorite animal. My favorite dogs are the Pitbull, Golden Retriever, and German shepherd. In conclusion, dogs are good for everything. Dogs will always win. Dogs are the best!

Take Care of Our World

By Sara Lima Duran Tutor: Marie Hammes

Humans must not pollute in order to care for creation. Don’t throw tires in the water because it harms sea life. Only throw trash in trash cans.

Recycle plastic, glass, and paper.

Clean air is important for all life. Wild fires are harmful for trees and air, and car emissions need to be regulated. Plants absorb oxygen, and they remove carbon dioxide. Clean air is healthy for humans and is essential for life.

Protect rain forests against deforestation and fires. Protect animals’ habitats by not cutting down trees.

Care for creation each day!

Somewhere Over Magic Hill

By Dalia Garcia Tutor: Liz Helbling

One day, a little girl named Victoria was at school. She was not in the mood for learning, but she wanted to play. So then, Victoria said, “I wish I could have a pet unicorn.” All of a sudden, Victoria instantly appeared on Magic Hill. Victoria climbed a rainbow that she saw right in front of her eyes. Then, Victoria saw a shadow. She went closer to see what it was, and it was a unicorn! Victoria was thrilled to see a unicorn for the first time. Then, she said to the unicorn, “Can we ride over the rainbow?” The unicorn said, “Yes,” and Victoria was stunned, “You can talk?!” “Of course,” said the unicorn. Victoria asked what the unicorn’s name was. The unicorn said, “My name is Sparkles!” Victoria and Sparkles had a great time together playing and laughing. When it was time for Victoria to go, she asked one more thing, “Can I have a puppy named Skittles?” Sparkles smiled and left. When Victoria went home, her parent handed her a nice, sweet, calm puppy. Victoria decided to name it Skittles, like she always wanted. THE END. 

A Dog’s Adventure By Ashley Noel Tutor: Vanessa Ibarra

1. HI! My name is Donut, and I am a dog who lives on Mystery Lane. I live with some really cool humans. My favorite human is a little girl named Ashley. She loves me very much. We play together all the time. She is a lot of fun! In this story that I am about to tell, you are going to be me. Have fun!

2. One afternoon you are playing outside and you see a butterfly. You chase it. What you don’t realize is that you chased it all the way into the woods. You’re scared and alone. You don’t know what to do. Then you look behind you and see a moose! You’re even more scared. Then the moose says “Hi, my name is MooseCraft!” Friend him? Turn to page 6 Say no to friending MooseCraft? Turn to page 5

3. You continue down the path, leaving MooseCraft in the dust. Who does he think he is trying to creep up on you and scare you? You smell around for the scent you were focused on before and come out of the woods back in the yard that you loved so much!! Your humans are outside using their grill to make a delicious steak for themselves and for you. You and your favorite human—the little girl—play a game of tug of war until dinner is done. Everyone is so happy to have you back home. THE END

4. You appreciate that MooseCraft was so accepting of you and that he wanted to be your friend, but you could not accept the offer of an adventure without your human. You say your goodbyes to MooseCraft and start down a pathway that seems as if it will lead you to your human. You walk all the way to the edge of the woods and realize you are right across

Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory Page 26

the street from your home!! You run in through your personal door right into your human’s arms! They’re so happy to see you. You think to yourself how you will never get distracted by a butterfly again or ever leave them. THE END

5. You don’t like the way that MooseCraft said “hi” and you are scared, so you run away. You run so fast through the woods that you trip over a branch on the ground. The branch smells familiar when you hit the side of your face on it. It smells like the same perfume that the humans have at the home you live in. You realize that the scent continues down a pathway, but it doesn’t seem like a friendly place to go. If you take the pathway, turn to page 7 If you, turn around and try to go back the way you came, turn to page 9

6. You say “Okay, so can you help me find home?” “Sure,” MooseCraft says. “What does your home look like?” “It’s a little brown house with no fence,” you say. “Hey I know where that is! The little girl who lives there feeds me carrots!” says MooseCraft. “Hey,” you chime in and say, “That’s my owner she feeds me too. Plus, she rubs my belly!” “Let’s go! She will be in the back yard to feed me my carrots. You can go back to her then!” MooseCraft says. So you can go back to the little girl (turn to page 4). or stay with moose and have the adventure you have been dreaming of. Turn to page 8.

7. You take the pathway and follow all the branches and leaves that smell like the perfume that you are so familiar with. It smells of berries and flowers and you can’t wait until you can see you’re human again. You want to bury your face into the middle of her shirt because that’s exactly where she sprays the perfume. You are dreaming about the berries so much that you bump into Moosecraft again. He insists that you speak to him.

Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory Page 27

You can give him a chance. Turn to page 6. You continue down the path. Turn to page 3.

8. MooseCraft goes to the little girl and gets his carrots. She asks him if he’s seen her dog. MooseCraft shakes his head no. Then, when you and MooseCraft are in the woods, a black bear comes, and when he comes to eat you, you wake up to see that you’re in the little girl’s bed. And you realize it was all a dream. The End.

9. You turn around and try to go back the way you came. You have absolutely no idea where you are and you only want to get home to your humans. You miss them so dearly. Suddenly, you hear footsteps in the distance. You are scared, and you know that the woods are a dark place. You’ve heard a lot of bad stories about the woods. You find a bush to hide in as the steps get closer. Your teeth are chattering with fear. With one eye open, you prepare yourself to see the horror that is coming your way. Suddenly, you see your human and she is calling your name!!! Your human has come to find you and is returning you back home!!

The End!

Rachael was born on August 25, 1968, which makes her 49 years old today. She does not look like a 49 year old. She looks like a 30 year old! She was raised in New York with her family and the restaurant business. Her family business helped shape her love of cooking because food is not just food itself. Cooking is when you and who you are cooking with share hard work and creativity. It creates an experience.

Before the famous 30-minute meals, Rachael was a chef at a bunch of restaurants around New York. Then she created a 30-minute meals cooking class in Albany, New York. She became so popular that CBS picked her up for a local channel. After CBS, came Food Network. They wanted her to have a show on their channel, too. She was a people person, which helped her get to where she is now with her own talk show!

Rachael Ray is not a typical famous person; she thinks she is just like everyone else. She wanted to help feed families in America by giving them affordable recipes, so she created a non-profit organization called Yum-O. The organization was launched in 2006 to stop hunger by promoting healthy and happy food relationships. This helps children to be inspired by cooking, because the recipes are easy for kids to follow. It helps them do better in school, because they have food in their tummies. This allows them to focus.

I really admire Rachael because she likes helping people. My mom once told me, “If you are mad when you are making food it will taste bad.” I believe Rachael Ray will never make a bad meal because she is always happy. Rachael makes people laugh even while they are going through rough times, and she is passionate about what she does.

Duke, the Hero By: Guadalupe Contrera-Valladares Tutor: Stephanie Neal

There once was a dog named Duke. In 1944, during the time of World

War II, Duke went on a boat ride from the United States to Germany. It took a long time to go to Germany in the boat ride. He went to Germany to help the U.S. soldiers to find the bad people called the Nazis. Nazis were the

German soldiers who were putting Jewish people in concentration camps.

Duke then met his soldier named Steve. Duke and Steve went back to the

U.S. base. They got to rest for a little while until it was time to eat. They had food that tasted gross, and their water had bugs in it. Then it was time to find all the Nazis. Duke used his sense of smell to find the Nazis. One of the

Nazis tried to hurt him, so Duke bit him. Duke then felt sad about biting a Nazi. After that, Duke and the

U.S soldiers put all of the Nazis in jail. Duke felt happy that all of the Nazis were in jail. Duke decided to stay in Germany to help the U.S soldiers. He was a hero.

The Day after the Dream By Aiden Bejar Tutor: Jasmin Quiroz-Gallegos

Barron woke up from a very strange dream. Then he looked in confusion. BOOM! He heard something crash outside his window and ran over like the speed of light. When he checked it out, it was a huge machine unlike any he had ever seen before. He quickly called his friends over and shouted “GUYS, YOU HAVE TO CHECK THIS OUT.” Once his friends, Fredrick and Jay, came over, they tip-toed close to the object and noticed there was a door. They tried opening it, but it was locked. So, they both kicked down the metal door like ninjas. Fredrick was whining about his foot because he had hit it so hard. Jay muttered,” Stop complaining, you big baby". Then Fredrick mumbled, “At least I am not scared of the dark.” And then they heard another huge crash come from the woods behind his house. They ran towards the woods, and they saw a dog sniffing another machine that looked like a UFO. Then they found the door to the crashed and burnt UFO. It opened by itself. Barron and his friends were curious to see what was inside, and this time they wouldn't have to kick down any doors. Once they were inside, they saw alien bodies lying on the floor of the UFO, including some humans. The aliens were dark blue with big heads, four fingers on each hand, really thin bodies, and the eyes completely black. They all freaked out once they saw the humans. Frederick quickly ran over to a human to check for a pulse. They were alive! They must have been knocked out from the explosion. Then they called the police. When the police came, Barron noticed it was the same police from his dream the night before, but he thought it was just a coincidence. The police asked Barron and his friends, “When did this happen? Can you tell me what you saw?” They took the police inside the UFO to show them the bodies, but they had disappeared. Suddenly they started smelling smoke, and they told the police to leave. “GET OUT! IT'S ABOUT TO CATCH ON FIRE!” Then the flames got on the trees. The fire started spreading around the forest. They saw three aliens who were laying on the UFO floor earlier in the woods trying to point some flare to get help from the other aliens, but it was too late. When the police went to check on the aliens, they noticed they had tracker bracelets on their wrists. The police tried everything to destroy them, but it wouldn't get damaged. Everyone in the neighborhood heard noises come from the sky. When they looked up, they saw twenty UFO’s. Everyone ran in chaos trying to save themselves, but no one could outrun the aliens. Military helicopters and trucks were coming to try to save all of us. We all had to come together if we were all going to survive. It was the humans vs. the aliens. Everyone grabbed a weapon and Barron, Jay, and Frederick were the commanders. Then Barron ordered, “When I say charge, we all charge!” He continued to Scream, “CHARGE!” Everyone started screaming and fighting. Then, when Barron, Jay, and Frederick saw the alien commander, they started charging at each other. Once they collided, everything went black.

A Day in Central Park

By Carmine Marchioni Tutor: Lauren Sciortino

One sunny morning, I thought that I should take a trip to Central Park. I saw a crowd of people. I saw toy boats in the pond. One was a black schooner named Wasp, flying the American Flag. Another boat was named the Lillian B. Womwrath. From another person in the crown, I heard that Stuart was going to race. Soon a policeman was sent from headquarters to stop the crowd from pushing each other. Stuart climbed aboard the Wasp. I heard a man in a bright green suit shout, “On your mark, get set, GO!” Everyone on the shore shouted “GO!” too, in excitement. People were pushing so hard that the policeman fell into the water. When he fell in the water, he created waves. I felt nervous seeing the waves head toward Stuart. A wave knocked Stuart out of his boat. Then he climbed back aboard the Wasp. When Stuart got back on the boat, the Lillian B. Womrath was close to the Wasp. I heard the owner of the Wasp talking to Stuart about a paper bag that was in the water, which Stuart went straight into. He then got into a collision with the Lillian B. Womwrath. They bumped into each other and got all tangled. My heart started to beat fast, and I was getting sweaty. I began to feel relaxed when Stuart began to clear the deck off. Stuart freed the Wasp and began to regain speed. I looked over and saw that the Lillian went off in another direction. Stuart was headed toward the finish line. When Stuart crossed the finish line and won the race, the crowd went wild and gathered around Stuart to congratulate him. When it was my turn to see Stuart, I asked him to sign my shirt. I couldn’t believe how small he was! I couldn’t wait to get home to tell everyone about my awesome day!

I Am a Professional Hockey Player

By Tanner Mayton Tutor: Ashley Wilmoth

I am a professional hockey player. My team is named the Tannermites. We are ferocious. One time Michael Jordan wanted to play, so we let him play. He was really good. We play at the Tanner Stadium, named after me, Tanner. I am the best player on our team. We were in the Olympics for fourteen days. We all won gold medals. Our hockey uniforms are blue and red. They are that way because blue means that we have a hard hit so that it goes into the sky. Red means that, as I said before, you will get hurt by us. We have a lot of professional hockey players who play on our team. Coach Jeremy, what he goes by on YouTube, plays on our team. He is very good. Our coach is Jackson Hayman. He is very good at his job. He went to the Olympics and won a gold medal. We have won the playoffs so often that we get bored of the playoffs. Therefore, we are so good.

Halloween Skate Park By Erick Valencia Tutor: Hannah Jenkins

Ansen, Landen, and I were at the skate park. “Watch me do a backflip,” said Ansen. He fell. The skate board knocked his shoes off. Ansen yelled for help. Landen and I skated over a hill and saw Ansen at the bottom. Landen and I helped him up. Ansen’s shoes were in the woods.

Landen and I went into the woods to look for Ansen’s shoes. We saw a snake! The big black snake had black eyes and a rattle on the end of his tail.

It was curled up and sleeping. We walked around it and found Ansen’s shoes. Ansen was sitting on a bench in the skate park. We gave Ansen his shoes back. He put his shoes on and tried to do a backflip again. This time, he landed the jump.
