“THE THREE SUITORS OF THE KING’S DAUGHTER”: CHARACTER ROLES IN THE ESTONIAN VERSIONS OF THE DRAGON SLAYER (AT 300) Risto Järv The first fairy tale type (AT 300) in the Aarne-Thompson type in- dex, the fight of a hero with the mythical dragon, has provided material for both the sacred as well as the profane kind of fabulated stories, for myth as well as fairy tale. The myth of dragon-slaying can be met in all mythologies in which the dragon appears as an independent being. By killing the dragon the hero frees the water it has swallowed, gets hold of a treasure it has guarded, or frees a person, who in most cases is a young maiden that has been kidnapped (MNM: 394). Lutz Rörich (1981: 788) has noted that dragon slaying often marks a certain liminal situation – the creation of an order (a city, a state, an epoch or a religion) or the ending of something. The dragon’s appearance at the beginning or end of the sacral nar- rative, as well as its dimensions ‘that surpass everything’ show that it is located at an utmost limit and that a fight with it is a fight in the superlative. Thus, fighting the dragon can signify a universal general principle, the overcoming of anything evil by anything good. In Christianity the defeating of the dragon came to symbolize the overcoming of paganism and was employed in saint legends. The honour of defeating the dragon has been attributed to more than sixty different Catholic saints. In the Christian canon it was St. -

GER 103: Fairy Tales in European Context Gen Ed Course Submission: for Inquiry – Humanitites 2 lectures PLUS 1 discussion section: Professor Linda Kraus Worley 1063 Patterson Office Tower Phone: 257 1198 E-mail: [email protected] Office Hours: Wednesdays 10 - 12; Fridays 10 – 12 and by appointment FOLKTALES AND FAIRY TALES entertain and teach their audiences about culture. They designate taboos, write out life scripts for ideal behaviors, and demonstrate the punishments for violating the collective and its prescribed social roles. Tales pass on key cultural and social histories all in a metaphoric language. In this course, we will examine a variety of classical and contemporary fairy and folktale texts from German and other European cultures, learn about approaches to folklore materials and fairy tale texts, and look at our own culture with a critical-historical perspective. We will highlight key issues, values, and anxieties of European (and U.S.) culture as they evolve from 1400 to the present. These aspects of human life include arranged marriage, infanticide, incest, economic struggles, boundaries between the animal and human, gender roles, and class antagonisms. Among the tales we will read and learn to analyze using various interpretive methods are tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, by the Italians Basile and Straparola, by seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French writers such as D‘Aulnoy, de Beaumont, and Perrault, by Hans Christian Andersen and Oscar Wilde. We will also read 20th century re-workings of classical fairy tale motifs. The course is organized around clusters of Aarne, Thompson and Uther‘s ―tale types‖ such as the Cinderella, Bluebeard, and the Hansel-and-Gretel tales. -

THE BRAVE LITTLE TAILOR Educator Supplement ABOUT THE PLAY The play is an adaptation by Brian Guering from the folk tale by The Brothers Grimm. SYNOPSIS Bullied and meek, a young tailor manages to kill seven flies in one blow while day- dreaming of slaying dragons. When exaggerated rumors of his skill spread throughout the village, the tailor is brought before the cowardly king and given the tasks of battling not only two troublesome giants, but also a fierce dragon. Only time will tell if he can summon the courage to prove to himself that one need not be big to be strong. CHARACTERS LITTLE TAILOR, a dreamer who thinks he is too small to achieve anything MA, his overprotective mother KING, a cowardly ruler of the kingdom PRINCESS, the King’s good-hearted and positive daughter JESTER, a court jester who narrates the story MASTER TAILOR, the Little Tailor’s overbearing boss BAKER’S WIFE, an overbearing woman BAKER, her shy husband JAM SELLER, A pushy and poor salesperson GIANTS, two big bullies DRAGON a huge dragon that is a threat to the kingdom. BEFORE THE PLAY Read a version of “The Brave Little Tailor” with your class. How do you think reading the book is different from watching the play? How might things from the book, such as the forest, the Tailor’s shop, and the great big giant, come to life onstage? Have students think of a time when they were in a situation that was very challenging for them. Did it challenge them in a positive way or a negative way? How did they handle it? What was the outcome? ATTENDING THE PLAY Theatre requires a large team of really talented people to create a show. -

A Brave Little Tailor sat plying his trade, Most wonderful jackets and trowsers he made, When he heard in the distance a woman’s shrill cry, “ Good jelly ! fine jelly ! nice jelly ! who’ll buy?” The sound was so pleasant that straightway he popped His head out the window, the woman he stopped. And said in a very encouraging way, “Come; here’s a good customer for you to-day!” The poor woman climbed up the stairs with her load Of jellies and all to the tailor she showed ; Some yellow, some crimson, some sweet and some tart. With a nice little label to tell them apart. The brave little tailor each cover did lift. Eyed closely the contents, then carefully sniffed. As if the fine flavor his nose could detect. Thought the woman “He’ll buy the whole lot, I expect!” “ This jelly seems good ” said the brave little man “ To buy it by wholesale would be a good plan It is something I’m fond of I’ll take — let me see — Oh, a quarter of a pound will be plenty for me!” The woman, who really imagined she’d found A generous customer, grumbled and frowned. -

RISKING MASCULINITY: PLAYING FAST AND LOOSE WITH HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY IN THE HERO’S GUIDE TO SAVING YOUR KINGDOM JANICE ROBERTSON Department of English Studies University of South Africa Pretoria, South Africa [email protected] ABSTRACT In Christopher Healy’s (2012) children’s book, The hero’s guide to saving your kingdom, the idea of hegemonic masculinity is subverted in various ways. In this reinvention of four fairy tales – ‘Cinderella’, ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Snow White’ and ‘Rapunzel’ – the author seems consciously to subvert the prevalent stereotypes surrounding traditional representations of the idealised, yet largely uninterrogated image of ‘Prince Charming’. All four of the princes who feature as protagonists in the book express their dissatisfaction at the prescriptive expectations that govern every aspect of their lived realities. Healy explores alternative ways of representing this type of character to modern child readers, in many cases testing the boundaries that dictate which physical characteristics and behavioural patterns are allowable in such characters. This article explores Healy’s negotiation of masculinity in the context of its intended 21st century child audience.
