Leinster had mixed fortunes in the inter-provincial competitions. Our hurlers put up a respectable performance before losing to Munster in the Semi Final played at Nenagh. The unavailability of a huge number of first choice players did not help our cause.

On the other hand our footballers had a much more productive campaign. The competition was played over a weekend in Kerry. In the semi final we had to go to extra time to beat Munster in Tralee.

The Final was played in Killarney and, in front of a mere handful of spectators, we eventually overcame the challenge of Connacht. I congratulate and thank all the players for their efforts and also the back-room squad led by Manager Luke Dempsey (Westmeath).

Despite this victory I cannot be hypocritical and change my mind about these competitions. They have done their duty and should be allowed to die. This, too, was the opinion of the Games Administration Committee last year but their advice was ignored by Central Council who voted to retain the competitions. Perhaps the provinces themselves might be a little more proactive in this matter.

Having established the principle of Leinster Council’s rights in this matter, Seamus then proceeded to re-invest the returns in the Stadium itself by negotiating the long term purchase of a suite and a number of premium seats for the use of Comhairle Laighean C.L.G. The overall outcome of all of this is of benefit to the Association both at provincial and national level.

Towards the end of his chairmanship Seamus has now completed the purchase of new meeting rooms and offices for the Council. When fully refurbished, this building will provide a huge boon for the G.A.A. at all levels.

During his term of office, Seamus Aldridge also had the task of overseeing the implementation of an operational and structural review of the Leinster Council which was commissioned to ensure that the Council is appropriately structured to meet the challenges of its future developments in a broad range of capacities. This is now in place and I feel its benefits will become obvious in the near future.

On behalf of the staff of Aras Laighean, the Council’s extended staff in the field, and on my own behalf, I want to thank Seamus most sincerely for his support, encouragement and assistance at all times.

This is a unique and marvellous achievement for any official in any sport. It is especially remarkable in Tommy’s case because during that period he has also served his sport, and others, in a wide variety of posts of responsibility. The list is too long to detail in full, here is just a sample.
