Several success cases of biological control can be found in the tropics around the world. The classical biological control has been applied with greater emphasis in Australia and Latin America, with many success cases of exotic natural enemies’ introduction for the control of exotic pests. Augmentative biocontrol is used in extensive areas in Latin America, especially in the cultures of sugar cane, coffee, and soybeans. -

Update on the Corona Pandemic in the Kingdom of Sweden October 27, 2020 As of today, the Swedish Public Health Authorities announced that – 15 new deaths have been confirmed within the last 24 hours due to the Coronavirus. Since Covid-19 reached Sweden the total mortality rate is now 5 918 people. 115 758 people have been confirmed infected and 2 683 people are in intensive care. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warns that far too many countries are seeing an exponential increase in the number of new covid-19 cases. “We urge leaders to take immediate action to prevent more unnecessary deaths,” he says. Colombia, Spain, Argentina and France are the latest countries to pass one million cases of confirmed infection, according to Johns Hopkins University. In total, more than 42 million people in the world have been infected. The spread of covid-19 has increased in Uppsala County. At the same time, residents with corona symptoms have had difficulty finding time for sampling, as the laboratory has not had time for all the tests, reports SVT Nyheter Uppsala. Now the laboratory capacity will be doubled, states SVT. The Uppsala Region has made an agreement with the Swedish Public Health Agency to analyze covid tests in a laboratory in Stockholm, starting next week. At present, the region analyzes about 5,000 samples a week. The lab in Stockholm will eventually be able to analyze around 4,000 samples a week. Johan Lindh, head of the section for clinical microbiology at the University Hospital in Uppsala, also promises more efficiency on site in Uppsala. -

OCHTEROIDEA La Superfamilia Ochteroidea, Incluida En El Infraorden Nepomorpha, Comprende Las Familias Ochteridae Y Gelastocoridae
| 341 Resumen OCHTEROIDEA La superfamilia Ochteroidea, incluida en el infraorden Nepomorpha, comprende las familias Ochteridae y Gelastocoridae. Ambas familias están presentes en todas las regiones biogeográficas del mundo, aunque tienen mayor diversidad y abundancia en las regiones tropicales. Hasta el momento para la Argentina se han citado tres géneros y 10 especies de Gelastocoridae, y una especie de Ochteridae. Se actualiza el estado de conocimiento de sus características morfológicas, bio- logía e historia taxonómica. Se presentan claves para la identificación de las subfamilias de Gelastocoridae y los géneros de Ochteridae, diagnosis de los géneros, la lista de especies y su distribución geográfica en la Argentina. Abstract The superfamily Ochteroidea, included in the in- fraorder Nepomorpha, is comprised of the families Ochteridae and Gelastocoridae. Both of them are present in all biogeographic regions, although they are more abundant and diverse in the tropics. Up to now, three genera and 10 species of Gelastocoridae and a single one of Ochteridae have been recorded from Argentina. I provide an account of the state of knowledge of the morphology, biology and taxonomic history of both families. Insect Classification Standards 2020
RECOMMENDED INSECT CLASSIFICATION FOR UGA ENTOMOLOGY CLASSES (2020) In an effort to standardize the hexapod classification systems being taught to our students by our faculty in multiple courses across three UGA campuses, I recommend that the Entomology Department adopts the basic system presented in the following textbook: Triplehorn, C.A. and N.F. Johnson. 2005. Borror and DeLong’s Introduction to the Study of Insects. 7th ed. Thomson Brooks/Cole, Belmont CA, 864 pp. This book was chosen for a variety of reasons. It is widely used in the U.S. as the textbook for Insect Taxonomy classes, including our class at UGA. It focuses on North American taxa. The authors were cautious, presenting changes only after they have been widely accepted by the taxonomic community. Below is an annotated summary of the T&J (2005) classification. Some of the more familiar taxa above the ordinal level are given in caps. Some of the more important and familiar suborders and families are indented and listed beneath each order. Note that this is neither an exhaustive nor representative list of suborders and families. It was provided simply to clarify which taxa are impacted by some of more important classification changes. Please consult T&J (2005) for information about taxa that are not listed below. Unfortunately, T&J (2005) is now badly outdated with respect to some significant classification changes. Therefore, in the classification standard provided below, some well corroborated and broadly accepted updates have been made to their classification scheme. A protocol and methods for monitoring the major physical, chemical, and biological components of stream ecosystems are presented. The monitor- ing protocol is organized into four stages. At stage 1 information is obtained on a basic set of parameters that describe stream ecosystems. Each following stage builds upon stage 1 by increasing the number of parameters and the detail and frequency of the measurements. Stage 4 supplements analyses of stream biotic structure with measurements of stream function: carbon and nutrient processes. SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA).
