    ROTARY CLUB OF KONA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Ken and Marge Clewett Scholarship Application We are looking for an individual that has during high school placed an emphasis on community service with a sincere desire to attend an accredited post-secondary institution (i.e. college, university, community college, vocational or trade school.) Candidates must be a graduate by June 2014 of a West Hawaii High School such as from Kealakehe High School, Konawaena High School, West Hawaii Explorations Academy, Hualalai Academy, Makua Lani Christian High School, and High School of the Pacific. This scholarship program is administered without regard to race, creed, color, age, religion, sex, national origin or physical disability. The scholarship award is $8,000 over four years ($2,000 per year); renewable each year up to four years of undergraduate study, or until graduation, whichever comes first. Scholarship funds may be used for any educational expenses such as tuition, fees, books, and supplies. Scholarships funds are non-transferable and will be paid directly to the school of choice in the recipient’s name. Recipients must take a minimum of three-quarters of a full course load and must maintain a grade- point average of 2.5 to remain qualified. Selection Criteria 1. Community Service and Activities 2. It's my opinion that when people see and understand the integrity of a native point of view with a scientific and spiritual essence to it, then there's pause to create questions of how. For example, how can we care and how can we expand this caring attitude to all other aspects of our relationships with the world. The renewal efforts at Keauhou-Kahalu‘u make visible the connections between mauka and makai (mountain and sea)…indeed, they make it clear that, yes, we have all come via the great waters of life. —Al Lagunero, Hawaiian muralist who created the painting that graces the Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center van In 2006, Sara Peck of UH Sea Grant and community members approached The Kohala Center (TKC) and asked if we could help sustain and expand the ReefTeach program she created and implemented at Kahalu‘u Bay. This program educates visitors about how to take care of the coral reef and natural resources in the bay. Visitors, not knowing any better, were trampling on the live corals and killing them. Between 350,000 – 400,000 visitors visit Kahalu‘u yearly, attracted by the shallow waters and easy access to the bay’s dynamic reef environment. With the help of our partners at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association), HTA (Hawai‘i Tourism Authority), and KIC (Kamehameha Investment Corporation), TKC adopted the ReefTeach program at the bay and began recruiting volunteers to help educate visitors on proper reef etiquette.

    www.huoa.org March/April 2012 Issue #137 Circulation 9,790 Hawaii-Okinawa High School Student Exchange wenty-four high school students arrived from Okinawa anxiously looking forward Tto spending two weeks with their host stu- dents and families here in Hawaii, yet sad because they had to leave behind one student who became ill just prior to departure. Five days later, much to everyone’s delight, Yuki Uehara was escorted by his dad Hayazo Uehara to join the group. Yuki’s dad remained in Hawaii for two days and flew back to Okinawa. 2012 marks the 22nd year of this Hawaii- Okinawa Student Exchange Program and the sec- ond year that HUOA has undertaken the project completely. Students visited the Arizona Memorial and met with Pearl City High’s Japanese class to exchange ideas and discuss issues on the promo- tion of peace. They were also treated to a typical local style picnic prepared by President Cyrus Tamashiro and President-Elect George Bartels, Hawaii and Okinawa students march together in the Honolulu Festival Parade down Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki. Jr. after their morning of Hawaiian games led by Tom Yamamoto. Polynesian Cultural Center was the highlight of the day where they were intrigued by the various Polynesian cultures. A three-day trip to the Big Island ended with an Aloha Party and an overnight stay at the Hawaii Okinawa Center. Taught by host students Cameron Brumblay and Ashley Oshiro, all of the Okinawan students danced the hula for their host families in addition to playing the sanshin and sharing some popular Okinawan songs.

    Educational Access Final Report for Academic Year 2011-12 October 2012 Introduction The following report is an overview of the Educational Access (EA) activities for the 2011-12 school year. This report was compiled by the Hawaii Educational Networking Consortium's (HENC) Education Program Manager as a condition of the Educational Access agreement between ‘Olelo, Community Media and the Hawaii Educational Networking Consortium. This report is divided into four major sections that include: Section 1.0 - The Channels and their Programming Page 1 Section 2.0 - The 2011-12 Awards Page 2 Section 3.0 - Funding and Report Summary Page 10 Section 4.0 - Appendices Page 13 Section 1.0.0 - The Channels and their Programming Section 1.1.1 - EA Programming The following table summarizes the programming activities for the two Educational Access channels on Oahu known as TEC and TEACH (Respectively Oceanic Cable digital channels 355 and 356). The following table reflects a composite of the hours of programming compiled from the data supplied by the University of Hawaii (UH) and the State of Hawaii Department of Education (HDOE). An unaudited copy of each entity's required benchmark report can be found in Appendix 1 and 2 of this report.
