Bassist extraodinaire, composer, arranger, educator, curator and administrator,Christian McBride, has been one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 years. Sometimes hard to believe considering this man is just 41 years of age. Beginning in 1989, this Philadelphia-born bassist moved to New York City to further his classical studies at the Juilliard School, only to be snatched up by alto saxophonist, . Since then, McBride's list of accomplishments have been nothing short of staggering. As a sideman in the jazz world alone, he's worked with the best of the very best - , Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, , Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, , Herbie Hancock and . In the R&B world, he's not only played with, but also arranged for Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. In the pop/rock world, he's extensively collaborated with Sting, Carly Simon, Don Henley, and Bruce Hornsby. In the hip-hop/neo-soul world, he's collaborated with the Roots, D'Angelo, and Queen Latifah. In many other specialty projects, he's worked closely with opera legend Kathleen Battle, bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, the Shanghai Quartet and the Sonus Quartet. . Away from the bass, Christian has become quite an astute and respected spokesperson for the music. In 1997, he spoke on former President Bill Clinton's town hall meeting "Racism in the Performing Arts ". He has served as Artistic Director of the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Sessions; co-director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem; and 2nd Chair for Creative Chair for Jazz of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. . Since 2000, McBride has blazed a trail as a bandleader with the Christian McBride Band. He has released two critically acclaimed CD's with that first group and in 2009 was signed to the Mack Avenue Records label where he recorded his quintet CD "Christian McBride & Inside Straight" . His second release on the label was "Conversations with Christian" a recording of duets with McBride and some of his best friends and mentors - George Duke, Angelique Kidjo, Dr. , Hank Jones, Chick Corea, Eddie Palmieri, Regina Carter, Ron Blake, , and Russell Malone. . In a stellar career that continues to showcase his remarkable talents as a consummate musician, bassist Christian reached another milestone with the 2011 release ofThe Good Feeling , his first big band recording. With “” Out Here , a 2014 release, Christian’s fifth recording on Mack Avenue Records, McBride introduced his latest working group: a trio, fully embracing at age 41 his role as standard-bearer and mentor. Pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr.—both younger, emerging artists—have been performing with McBride’s smallest group for about three years, honing their trio conception to a fine point of expressive depth and nuance with select performances around the world - we are very glad to be able to present this ensemble to Central Pa’s avid jazz audience. . CPFJ thanks the Shearer Family Fund of The Foundation For Enhancing Communities, on behalf of Scott Shearer, for funding our Spring Concert series! 4 Christian McBride Trio

CHRISTIAN SANDS - piano: Christian Sands is an emerging jazz force. A Steinway Artist, he takes a fresh look at the entire language of jazz: stride, swing, bebop, progressive, fusion, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban. Born May 22, 1989, Christian possessed an insatiable appetite for music, enrolling in music classes at age 4 and writing his first composition at age 5. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Manhattan School of Music. His meteoric rise in the jazz world already includes two appearances at the 2006 and 2007 Grammy Awards, including a, highly publicized duet with legendary pianist Oscar Peterson. At the young age of 20 he received two GRAMMY Nominations for Best Piano Solo, and Best Latin Jazz Album for his performance on Bobby Sanabria’s “Kenya Revisited ”. He is the protégé of Dr. Billy Taylor and was performed with him several times at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Following in his mentor’s footsteps he encourages, inspires and advocates for the preservation and history of Jazz. He has shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as , Stefon Harris, Lou Donaldson, James Moody, Patti Austin, and Wycliffe Gordon to name a few. On his four CDs,Footprints (which was recorded when he was 12),Harmonia, Risin’ , and Furioso , he demonstrates his skills as a composer, arranger, and producer. Christian has a firm grasp on the jazz culture and was named one of Jazz’s future rising stars in “Jet Magazine” by Wynton Marsalis. . ULYSSES OWENS, JR. - drums: Ulysses Owens Jr. is an artist “who takes a backseat to no one ”(The New York Times) , a label that seemingly describes his remarkable ascent as one of today’s premier drummers, or perhaps, his evolution as a producer, composer, educator, and entrepreneur. Ulysses is steadily establishing himself as a leader in his generation of jazz artists, admired for his sensitive, fiery, and complex playing, vivid display of textural nuance, and gift for propelling a band with charisma and integrity. Both humble in person and imposing behind a kit, Owens is a two-time Grammy® Award winner who has earned his stripes as a member of bassist Christian McBride’s acclaimed trio and the driving force of McBride’s famed big band. His own 2009 debut recording “It's Time For U” featured several original compositions and arrangements. In 2012, he released a second album, “Unanimous ” (Criss Cross Jazz), featuring Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, and Christian Sands. In 2010, Ulysses received his first Grammy® for his performance on Kurt Elling's "Dedicated To You, " and his second Grammy® for the Christian McBride Big Band album, " ." He has toured and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Elling, Diane Schuur, Renee Fleming, Monty Alexander, , and . This year marks the release of two new albums as a leader: his third album, “Onward and Upward;” and “ Time is Now,” the debut album of New Century Jazz Quintet, co-led with Takeshi Obayashi for the Japanese label,Spice Of Life . In 2008, Owens and his family founded the non-for-profit organizationDon’t Miss a Beat, Inc . in his home town of Jacksonville, Florida, with the mission of combining music and art with a focus on academic achievement, civic engagement, and empowering inner city students to strive for their dreams.

Ron Waters is leading rehearsals for theCPFJ Youth Band . There is no tuition fee and all applicants are accepted. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer and trumpet player and the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interest in jazz. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!! CENTRAL PA JAZZ CAMP @ MESSIAH COLLEGE JUNE 17-19, 2015
