Thorpe Family Residence Merger On January 1, 2016, Thorpe Family Residence, Inc. officially merged with Nazareth Housing, Inc. This merger completed several years of careful planning by the boards of both organizations. Like Nazareth Housing, Thorpe Family Residence was founded under the mission of ending homelessness for low-income families in New York City through stable housing and economic empowerment resources.

This merger means the continuation and expansion of services in vulnerable Bronx neighborhoods and flexibility for existing funding sources to be used in both the Lower East Side and the Bronx, depending on changing need. This merger will enable Nazareth Housing to help more families in more communities find economic and housing stability.

Supportive Housing

Supportive Housing Works! Since our earliest days as a pioneer organization in the Homesteading Movement in the Lower East Side, Nazareth Housing has been creating and sustaining supportive housing for families and seniors. This past year, we are pleased to have our New York State Supportive Housing Program contract extended to include units in both the Bronx and the Lower East Side.

Resilient Communities

LESReady! As a lead member of LESReady!, Nazareth Housing hosted a recovery workshop with the NYC Office of Emergency Management in disaster training and preparation for our membership. LESReady! members were trained in presenting the Ready New York program. Members then shared the program and materials to constituents and others in the community to expand reach and impact.

With our Executive Director as Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee, Nazareth Housing administered an $80,000 grant from the New York Community Trust on behalf of the activity of LESReady! Along with supporting communications and outreach, the grant provided resources for us to award mini-grants to members engaging Staff members Carlos Martinez and Andres Vincent in neighborhood preparedness and resiliency during a NYC Retrofit Accelerator walk-through, outreach. LifeLab

Programming Integration LifeLab is one of Nazareth Housing’s most successful prevention and outreach components. Spanning nearly 200 workshops per year, LifeLab offers focused and effective training, strength-based supportive engagement, and inspired play to over 1,800 individuals.

In October of 2015, Fatiha made a courageous move and spoke to a social worker at her children’s school. Fatiha and her children were immediately moved to a safe place, away from her abuser.

Six months after leaving her husband, Fatiha was given her Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher for a two-bedroom apartment. Fatiha contacted Nazareth Housing for an appointment, had a full intake and assessment and told her history and her goals for her family. Fatiha also completed a Supportive Housing Application for Nazareth Housing.

Fatiha and her children enrolled in a variety of services. Her children participated in YouthLab workshops such as Artists All and Little Creatures Act Out Theater Camp. Fatiha met biweekly with Nazareth Housing staff to work towards safe and secure housing.

As a result of YouthLab workshops, Fatiha’s children built healthy relationships with their peers, increased their self-confidence, and due to the compassion

Meeting Urgent Needs

Furniture Donation Service With generous and long-standing support from the Jim Jacobs Charitable Foundation, Nazareth Housing’s FDS continues to provide families in need with essential furniture and household goods. FDS provides free pick up from donors and free delivery of new and gently used donated furniture to over 300 families each year.

Over 300 children, with parents and grandparents, attend these special dinners designed to connect our program participants with a broader community during the holidays.

Emergency Family Shelter

Empowering Your Move Nazareth Housing shelters provide a strength based approach designed to empower families to find and retain safe, permanent housing. Despite a challenging housing market, Nazareth Housing succeeded in achieving 140% of our shelter rehousing goal in FY 16.

With 52 families, including 129 children in shelter services in FY 16, Nazareth Housing shelter provides quality housing and services to move families from homelessness to a place they can call home. In general, the length of stay for families at Nazareth Housing is 41% shorter than the overall NYC average, a testament to the benefits of support services, wrap-around case management, and the incredible strength of each family. and bathing techniques for their children.
