Here in the Precise Order in Which They Were Found in the Box, Without Any Rearrangement, and Irrespective of Any Desired Chronological, Alphabetical Or Subject Order INVENTORY OF THE ARCHIVES OF THE JEWISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF ENGLAND. INVENTORY OF THE ARCHIVES OF THE JEWISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF ENGLAND 30 SEPTEMBER 2015 Michael Jolles FORMATION OF INVENTORY This Inventory updates, slightly amends, slightly amplifies and completely supersedes the Progress Report dated 31 July 2015. The objective of the Inventory is to list precisely what constitutes the archives of the Society. In forming this Inventory, no items have been assorted, re-arranged, withdrawn, supplemented, marked or catalogued. No earlier inventory of the archives has come to light at the time of completion of this Progress Report. Only one item is known to have been externally deposited; all the others have been held in storage by the Society. OUTLINE OF CONTENTS [1] EXTERNALLY DEPOSITED [2] HELD IN STORAGE BY THE SOCIETY The items listed under this heading are those that have been selected for constituting the archive and whose details are thus entered into the Inventory, which has been compiled by Michael Jolles. These items have been listed in strict order, ‘as found’, irrespective of chronological, alphabetical or subject order. Brief descriptions, which almost invariably include the date, are provided for the purpose of identification, not for analysis, topic definition or interpretation. ABBREVIATIONS AGM Annual General Meeting. Barnett Rev. Arthur Barnett. Edwards Lewis Edwards, MA, FSA. Hyamson Albert Montefiore Hyamson, OBE. JC Jewish Chronicle. ACC/2712/15/01/0 (was “163”). 1918. [Source: LMA website.] ITEMS HELD IN STORAGE BY THE SOCIETY (A) Those items listed in sections A1 to A22 in this inventory had been stored in a plastic box which David Jacobs requested Michael Jolles, on 16 June 2015, to annotate. These items have been listed here in the precise order in which they were found in the box, without any rearrangement, and irrespective of any desired chronological, alphabetical or subject order. Division into Sections merely reflects the physical separation, not thematic aspects, of the items, as found. Some items were nevertheless folded in a complex manner so that it was not clear which item was being enclosed within which. Brief descriptions, which are almost invariably accompanied by the date, are provided here for the purpose of identification, but not for analysis, topic definition or interpretation. The inspection and the annotation of these items were undertaken during June 2015 and July 2015. This part of the archive consisted of one box, of just over one cubic foot capacity. Those items listed under section A23, which were annotated by Michael Jolles and David Jacobs on 30 September 2015, occupy just less than a cubic foot. The contents are dry, and generally well preserved, but need replacement paper clips and new folders. Some items are rather faded, especially Photostats. Some documents treated with adhesive tape need further attention. Dates have been standardised, including those on postmarks; for example, “8 June 1945”, instead of, say, “8 VI 45”. ‘Carbon copy’ denotes that the document has the texture and appearance of carbon copy paper. The ‘date’ of a legal document may be the date of a copy (or any other date prominently inscribed, maybe of a document referred to), not necessarily the date of any agreement. This Inventory is paginated 1 to 40. 2 INVENTORY OF THE ARCHIVES OF THE JEWISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF ENGLAND. RANGE OF ITEM NUMBERS IN EACH SECTION A1. One item. Completely listed. A2. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract of Thesis This thesis examines the birth of secondary education for Jews in England, focusing on the middle classes as defined in the text. This study explores various types of secondary education that are categorised under one of two generic terms - Jewish secondary education or secondary education for Jews. The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated.

We should like to stress both that the Journal is editorially independent and that the opinions expressed by authors are their own responsibility.'
