WWW.NCTTA.ORG 2015 NCTTA ANNUAL REPORT MEMBERSHIP NCTTA is a membership organization formed by college table tennis clubs in North America. Individual athletes who wish to participate join NCTTA by forming a club at their college, and subsequently registering their college with NCTTA. Member colleges vary widely in their size, level of activity, and degree of support from their college administration. They include clubs which are organized as: Small clubs of few members, self-funded by students, peripherally recognized by their college. Medium-sized clubs which receive partial funding by the college. Large clubs with both Coed and Women’s teams, with most expenses paid by the college. Fully funded clubs with established and continuing college support, sometimes offering scholarship programs. Of particular note, two member schools offer full table tennis programs and formal scholarships: Texas Wesleyan University (Fort Worth, TX) and Lindenwood University (St. Charles, MO). MEDIA NCTTA publishes a monthly e-mail newsletter that includes all current topics related to college table tennis. The newsletter reaches 3700 e-mail addresses, thereby providing exposure for sponsors and affiliates throughout the year. The College Table Tennis Championships is streamed live in high definition on YouTube, in TV quality complete with four camera angles, live commentary, and replay on the Official ITTF YouTube Channel. A full color program is also produced for the Championships. WWW.NCTTA.ORG 2015 NCTTA ANNUAL REPORT PROMOTIONAL EVENTS For the 2015 NCTTA Photo Contest, presented by PepPod, college table tennis clubs submitted photos of team members playing table tennis with unusual rackets. The winning photo was submitted by the University of Minnesota. The 2015 College Table Tennis Bracket Challenge was a new online event that was open to the public, consisting of two contests: the NCTTA Team Bracket Challenge, sponsored by TMS International; and the NCTTA Singles Bracket Challenge, sponsored by Double Fish. The contestants who most accurately predicted the tournament results won cash and prizes worth over $1500. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM In cooperation with Newgy Industries, NCTTA offers scholarships of up to $1000 each to NCTTA athletes based on GPA, financial need, table tennis ability, and a 1000 word essay. This program has been in place since 2009. In 2014-2015, scholarships were awarded to: Caroline Kajihara (Texas Wesleyan University) Bliss Chang (University of Alabama at Birmingham) Cheng Li (Mississippi College) Yichi Zhang (Mississippi College) Ellen Hwang (University of California, Berkeley) Nancy Zhou (Brown University) MANAGEMENT AND STAFF The NCTTA Executive Board governs and manages the organization. The board consists of 7 volunteer directors, each with specific duties. The six NCTTA regions are managed by Regional Directors, and the NCTTA divisions are managed by Division Directors. The number of divisions varies each year; there were 29 divisions in 2014- 2015. Committees oversee various specific areas. Current committees include: Alumni, Audit/Rules, Championships, Coaches, Disabled, Enrollment, Finance, Marketing, Ratings, Recruiting, Technology, and Women. http://www.nctta.org/officers/ WWW.NCTTA.ORG 2015 NCTTA ANNUAL REPORT SPONSORS This year, NCTTA signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with TMS International, the marketing partner of the International Table Tennis Federation. TMS subsequently acquired Joola, Double Fish, and Gerflor as equipment sponsors. The 2015 College Table Tennis Championships were also sponsored by PepPod, maker of effervescent energy drink tablets. Newgy Industries continues to sponsor the NCTTA Scholarship Program. The relationship with TMS clearly shows the potential of NCTTA, and this will also help NCTTA grow even bigger in the upcoming years. TMS has signed on for a 3 year contract to sponsor the NCTTA until the 2016-2017 season. CHARITY This was the inaugural year that NCTTA began collecting used equipment to help underprivileged table tennis players. This effort was welcomed by many of the NCTTA players and staffs who packed additional used rubbers and blades when attending their respective divisional or regional tournament. In March 2015, a package was shipped to “The Backhanders”, a table tennis club in the central region of Ghana. The package will allow the club to continue its mission to “groom these kids and help them develop their [table tennis] skills”. Excellence in table tennis not only brings the sport to a higher level, but also makes the athletes eligible for various scholarships around the country. WWW.NCTTA.ORG 2015 NCTTA ANNUAL REPORT FUTURE GROWTH While participation from international students continues to be strong, the NCTTA has seen a steady increase in involvement from dedicated US student-athletes, particularly women. NCTTA believes the growth of women’s table tennis is critical for overall sport development. The clearest indication of this growth is at our College Table Tennis Championships where their presence has been strong for the last three years, nearly meeting the tournament’s maximum capacity. TOP SPIN A Film by Sara Newens & Mina T. Son Digital (DCP & BluRay) / Documentary / 81 min / 2014 / English & Mandarin w/ English Subtitles FIRST RUN FEATURES The Film Center Building 630 Ninth Ave. #1213 New York, NY 10036 (212) 243-0600 / Fax (212) 989-7649 Website: www.firstrunfeatures.com Email: [email protected] Synopsis: Inside a cramped gym tucked behind a California strip mall, the clacking sounds of hollow plastic balls whirling at 80 mph are punctuated by exclamations of victory and bitter cries of defeat. Welcome to the hidden world of competitive ping pong. Three fiercely committed teenagers battle their way through the world of elite table tennis. With devoted parents by their side, they have traded normal teenage life for a chance to represent their country on the world's biggest athletic stage: the Olympics. Top Spin reveals how Ariel, Michael, and Lily balance rivalry, teenage awkwardness and friendships as every match impacts their fledgling confidence. Regularly juggling six-hour training sessions, overseas tournaments, and schoolwork, they inevitably sacrifice the typical teenage rites of passage. An inside look at offbeat sport, Top Spin turns one of America's favorite pastimes on its head and reveals a coming-of-age story where success and failure come down to mere millimeters. Directors’ Statement: Our project began in the winter of 2010 when we directed an award-winning short film about junior table tennis champion Ariel Hsing while attending Stanford University’s M.F.A. Documentary Film and Video Program. The short went on to screen at festivals all over the world.
