Doubles Events • The total number of Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles will be determined by the countries qualified for team events, and the additional qualified athletes (six per gender). In any case, there will be no more than 15 pairs of Men’s and Women’s Doubles, and 18 pairs for Mixed Doubles. Team Events A total of 12 NOCs per gender will compete in the team events. Team competitions will have two stages: • Qualification groups : A total of four groups of three teams each will be formed. All teams in a group will compete against each other. • Main draw : The top two ranked teams in each group will advance to the main draw, competing in a knockout system for quarterfinals onwards. The match system used will be the Olympic system, as outlined below: • Three players per team • One doubles and four singles match • Each player can play two matches Competition Format: • Match 1 : BC vs YZ (doubles) • Match 2 : A vs X • Match 3 : C vs Z • Match 4 : A vs Y • Match 5 : B vs X All matches in team events will be best of five games. The bronze medal winning team effort was led by Ariel Hsing, Lily Zhang, and Erica Wu. Hsing and Zhang also won individual bronze medals at the event, giving the U.S. three medals at the Pan American Games table tennis competition. Hsing, Zhang, and Wu will be amongst the athletes competing for a spot to compete in London on the United States Olympic Team when the Olympic Trials come to Bond Park Community Center in Cary, North Carolina February 9-12, 2012. The top four men and the top four women at the U.S. Olympic Trials will qualify to compete in the North America Olympic Qualification Tournament in Cary in April. Canada’s Mo Zhang took home the gold medal in the women’s singles event. By winning the gold medal at the Pan American Games, Mo Zhang has automatically qualified for the Olympic Games in London. Zhang’s Canadian teammates will visit Cary April 20-22, 2012 to compete against the top U.S. players at the North America Olympic Qualification Tournament. The top two women and the top three men at this event will qualify to compete at the Olympic Games in London.

At the 2014 TMC College Table tennis Championships in Monroeville, fans cheered when the Toronto women’s doubles team knocked off a powerful Princeton squad on Friday afternoon. “It was a huge upset,’’ said NCTTA president Willy Leparulo minutes after the Toronto duo prevailed. The Canadian team consisting of Vivien Zhou and Xixi Guo was relentless as they defeated Princeton standouts Ariel Hsing and Shirley Fu. The 18-year-old Hsing of Fremont, California was a celebrated member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic table tennis team. Big crowds looked on Canada’s stars pulled off one of the nice early upsets of the three-day event near Pittsburgh. The two Toronto players also excel in the classroom. Vivien Zhou is an applied math and statistics major from Foshan, China. Xixi Guo is an economics major from Changsha, China. Both are seniors. “We are happy we won. My partner, Xixi, was very good today,’’ Vivien said moments after the games ended. “Princeton has good players. We were fighting for every point.’’ At the University of Toronto, “everybody likes table tennis,’’ Xixi said. It was also a busy time for the 47,000-student university back home with exams going on in early April. Many students brought their books and computers to the tourney to study between games. Xixi Guo has been competing since she was 7-years-old and played until she was 14.

Os três são bolsistas do Programa Talento Olímpico do Paraná – TOP 2016 Três atletas paranaenses, em diferentes estágios da carreira, foram homenageados nesta terça-feira (16), no Rio de Janeiro, na 17º edição do Prêmio Brasil Olímpico, organizado pelo Comitê Olímpico do Brasil (COB) em reconhecimento aos destaques do esporte brasileiro em 2015, em cada modalidade esportiva. Atleta de Ponta Grossa, e que atualmente mora em Campinas (SP) – com vaga garantida nas Olimpíadas Rio 2016 – Cassio Rippel foi eleito o melhor do ano no tiro esportivo. O passaporte para as Olimpíadas foi conquistado com a medalha de ouro na prova de carabina deitado 50m nos Jogos Pan-Americanos de Toronto. Já a matogrossense Ana Satila, que treina e é federada no Paraná, foi eleita a melhor atleta do ano na canoagem slalom, prova em que tem se destacando mundialmente. Com um ouro (C1) e uma prata (K1) no Pan de Toronto, Ana Satila foi também, com apenas 16 anos, a mais jovem atleta da delegação brasileira nas Olimpíadas de Londres, em 2012, e busca agora se garantir na Rio 2016. O principal destaque paranaense no Prêmio Brasil Olímpico, porém, foi a ciclista Amanda Kunkel, de apenas 13 anos. Após conquistar três medalhas de ouro nos Jogos Escolares da Juventude, etapa para estudantes de 12 a 14 anos, realizados pelo COB em Fortaleza, em setembro, a estudante do Colégio Estadual Tomaz Edison de Andrade Vieira, de Maringá, foi eleita a melhor atleta do País nesta categoria, ao lado do judoca Leonardo Santana.

WThis month we welcomed volunteers from Italy, Holland, USA, Germany, Denmark, UK and Switzerland, to our two destinations, Chengdu and Shanghai. They are all working in a whole range of different exciting projects which includes journalism, sports, teaching, medical, care, law and a Mandarin language school. We have not only welcomed volunteers, but also a new member of staff to the Projects Abroad China team; Elaine Gao is our new regional manager for Chengdu. Elaine’s introductory article is to follow in this newsletter. Also included in this newsletter is a message from George Underwood, our British journalism volunteer, who talks about his ‘crazy experience’ in China and the popular free magazine whom he is writing for. We have Danielle Pezzini, our Italian journalism volunteer, who is writing for a big Shanghainese newspaper. Marcel Schwarz, our German business volunteer sharing his experience at his business placement. Stef Van Assche, our Dutch journalist volunteer, informs us about what it is like to work for Shanghai’s biggest expat magazine.
