More memories from Joe For the third of my lockdown projects, and with the help of Gethin Williams, Keith Warren, Jeremy Wood and Dr Haydn James, I take a look at all the sporting arena performances that the London Welsh Male Voice Choir have been involved in. The Arenas The rehearsals are over. You walk out in your red jackets, heart-thumping, into a half empty stadium and stand on the pitch, pre-match, looking at the vast space of the arena that will, in a short time, be packed to the rafters with fervent supporters. You are performing to a captive audience who’s heart and soul are perfectly in tune with yours and who give you their undivided attention as the atmosphere is ramped up minutes before kick-off. You are privileged to be here, walking on hallowed turf. You feel the excitement and pride of appearing before an expectant nation. You smell the newly cut and watered grass. You hear the roar and stand in unison with your heroes as they walk onto the pitch. There is a moment’s silence as the crowd rises and all eyes are on you, and your eyes are on the conductor, as his baton brings in the band accompaniment before experiencing the spine-tingling emotion of singing your national anthem to an arena packed with rugby fans and a live television audience of millions. You are part of extraordinary matches and witness legends being made, and folklore created in song. You are on the fi eld with The London Welsh Male Voice Choir and you will be part of some of Wales’s most iconic rugby matches in modern times. -

The Football Association Challenge The Cup Final Cup Final Facts • The match is widely known as just the Cup Final. • It is the last match in the Football Association (FA) Challenge Cup. • It has about 86 000 spectators and millions of TV viewers. • The trophy (winner’s cup) is only on loan to the winning side. • It is the oldest cup competition in the world, first played in the 1871 - 72 season. Who Can Enter? The Challenge Cup competition is open to any club in the top ten levels of the English Football League. Once clubs have registered to play, the tournament is organised into 12 randomly drawn rounds, followed by the semi-finals and finals. The higher ranked teams join the competition in later rounds when some of the lower ranked teams have been knocked out. What Do the Winners Receive? The winners of the final match receive the Football Association Cup, the FA Cup. It comes in three parts; the base, the cup and a lid. Over the years, there have been two designs of trophy and five cups have been made. The first cup, known as the ‘little tin idol’, was stolen in 1895 and never returned. An exact replica was made and used until 1910. From 1911, a new design was made. In 1992, another copy was made as the cup was wearing out from being handled, and another replacement was made in 2014. The cup is presented at the end of the match, giving the engraver just five minutes to engrave the winning team on the silver band on the base. -

SUNDOWN OPTIMIST BUFFALO GALS CLUB ACHIEVEMENTS November 2017 This document contains a listing of achievements of the Sundown Optimist Buffalo Gals & World Team organization. SOBG Achievements Page 2 Club Achievements Below are some of the club achievements recorded to date: 1967 - Buffalo Gals officially named in honour of Regina’s Buffalo Days celebration. Prior to 1967, the Buffalo Gals performed under the name Prairie Maids, Twirling Teens and Johnson Jets and took part in local events. A “BIG” trip to Winnipeg or Calgary was the highlight of the year. Even then, the philosophy of group interaction with your competitive peers was utilized to keep the Martin School students “at the top”. The standard was being set for Saskatchewan and as our horizon broadened, so did the accomplishments. The groundwork was laid for today’s champions and Stars of Tomorrow. 1969 Canadian National Exhibition, Toronto, On ★ 1st place Corps Championships ★ This marked the first time a Western Baton Twirling group traveled to the East for a Canadian Championship. 1974 America’s Youth on Parade, South Bend, Indiana, USA ★ Capture “Little Brown Jug”, to become the first Canadian Baton Twirling Corps to win Grand National Dance Twirl Championship. 1976 Optimist International Convention, Washington, DC ★ Guest performers at the Optimist Convention. ★ Captured the “Little Brown Jug” for the 2nd time as Senior Grand National champions at AYOP, South Bend, Indiana 1978 Optimist International Convention, San Diego, California, USA ★ Guest performers at the Optimist Convention. Canadian Championships, Winnipeg, Manitoba ★ National titles in all three Corps, Team and Dance Twirl events, Juvenile, Junior and Senior age divisions (another first in Canadian Baton Twirling).
