Structures: Existence Stars Question 10. How Were the Elements from Iron to Uranium Made? “Scientists’ understanding of the production of elements up to iron in stars and supernovae is fairly complete. The precise origin of the heavier elements from iron to uranium remains a mystery." Scientific Significance: While we have a relatively an atomic number higher than iron—such as silver and good understanding of the origin of elements lighter gold—presents a mystery. than iron, important details in the production of structures:elements from iron to uranium remain a puzzle.existence Picture A sequence of rapid neutron captures stars by nuclei, the periodic table. This fluid flow develops beneath the shock and, when coupled to nuclear and neutrino ineractions, is believed to lead to the explosion. The enormous energies that this generates creates an environment where elements of life are synthesized. 45 Kelvin’s paradox “Some unknown source of energy laid down in the store house of creation” –1– - a.k.a. Review Luminous Blue Variables Kerstin Weis 1* and Dominik J. Bomans 1,2,3 1 Astronomical Institute, Faculty for Physics and Astronomy, Ruhr University Bochum, 44801 Bochum, Germany 2 Department Plasmas with Complex Interactions, Ruhr University Bochum, 44801 Bochum, Germany 3 Ruhr Astroparticle and Plasma Physics (RAPP) Center, 44801 Bochum, Germany Received: 29 October 2019; Accepted: 18 February 2020; Published: 29 February 2020 Abstract: Luminous Blue Variables are massive evolved stars, here we introduce this outstanding class of objects. Described are the specific characteristics, the evolutionary state and what they are connected to other phases and types of massive stars. Our current knowledge of LBVs is limited by the fact that in comparison to other stellar classes and phases only a few “true” LBVs are known. This results from the lack of a unique, fast and always reliable identification scheme for LBVs. It literally takes time to get a true classification of a LBV. In addition the short duration of the LBV phase makes it even harder to catch and identify a star as LBV. We summarize here what is known so far, give an overview of the LBV population and the list of LBV host galaxies. LBV are clearly an important and still not fully understood phase in the live of (very) massive stars, especially due to the large and time variable mass loss during the LBV phase. We like to emphasize again the problem how to clearly identify LBV and that there are more than just one type of LBVs: The giant eruption LBVs or h Car analogs and the S Dor cycle LBVs.

Rauw et al. have recently presented spectroscopy for this system, M, for the component stars 3.8 ע and 68.8 4.0 ע strongly suggesting extremely large minimum masses of70.7 of the system, with the exact values depending strongly on the period of the system. We detect deep eclipses of about 0.4 mag in the light curve of WR 20a, confirming and refining the suspected period ofP p 3.686 days and 2Њ.0 . The Quintuplet cluster was discovered in one of the first infrared surveys of the Galactic center region (Okuda et al. 1987, 1989) and was observed for this project with the ESO-VLT near-infrared integral field instrument SINFONI-SPIFFI. The subsequent data reduction was performed in parts with a self-written pipeline to obtain flux-calibrated spectra of all objects detected in the imaged field of view. First results of the observation were compiled and published in a spectral catalog of 160 flux-calibrated K-band spectra in the range of 1.95 to 2.45 µm, containing 85 early-type (OB) stars, 62 late-type (KM) stars, and 13 Wolf-Rayet stars.

While tremendous progress towards an understanding of SNe has been made, there are still many unanswered questions. The goal of this thesis is to study the evolution of massive stars, both before and after explosion. In the case of SNe, we synthesize supernova light curves and spectra by relaxing two assumptions made in previous investigations with the the radiative transfer code cmfgen, and explore the effects of these two assumptions. Previous studies with cmfgen assumed γ-rays from radioactive decay deposit all energy into heating. However, some of the energy excites and ionizes the medium.
