Accompanying himself on his trusty 12 string and 6 string guitars, his “wandering minstrel” style of performance includes material from his solo CDs, Seekers favorites, along with songs and anecdotes from his long career in the music industry.     4 ‘You’re Messin’ Up My Mind’: Why Judy Jacques Avoided the Path of the Pop Diva Robin Ryan Introduction: Stardom and Talent This chapter puts forward a conceptual framework for a ‘stardom in flux’ illustrated through the internal and external growth of a single female career. With a freakish vocal range spanning C below middle-C to high E-flat, the singer-songwriter Judy Jacques (born in Melbourne, 1944) has progressively manifested varying forms of stardom moderated by the biases of popular culture. In view of the niche scenes and musical movements outlined below, I propose that a stardom in flux may represent society in flux as much as a life in flux. In contrast to a hypothetical ‘steady-state stardom’, the complex social relations, stylistic trajectories and geographical contexts that hinge around a stardom in flux prove to be many and varied. Talent, defined by McLeod and Herndon (1980, p. 188), is ‘the concept of an innate predisposition to competence’. It was a compulsion for singing that propelled the young Jacques into the limelight of Melbourne’s jazz/ folk boom and gospel circuits. Riding on her success in 1960s television, she was on the cusp of becoming the pin-up ‘Olivia’ or ‘Kylie’ of her day— had it not been for a crisis point when the singer baulked at the barriers 55 POPULAR MUSIC, STARS AND STARDOM being put up around female artists. Get in quick as tickets go on sale today for the Brisbane season of the global musical phenomenon, MAMMA MIA! The smash hit musical will open in Brisbane from 26 December 2017 at Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC’s) Lyric Theatre as part of a national tour. This exciting new production of MAMMA MIA! is produced in Australia by Michael Coppel, Louise Withers & Linda Bewick. Starring in this brand new Australian production as mother-of-the-bride Donna Sheridan is Natalie O’Donnell. Natalie began her acting career in 1998 with her professional debut in the Australian production of Les Misérables. Since then she has sustained a remarkable career in theatre, television and film across the world. She has starred in many musicals including most recently in Australia in Jerry’s Girls, Songs for a New World and Next to Normal. Most poignantly Natalie starred in the original Australian production of MAMMA MIA! as Sophie in 2001. It will be very special to see her come full circle now leading this new production in the role of Donna. In the role of Donna’s daughter and bride-to-be Sophie, is emerging young Australian actor Sarah Morrison. Sarah has just completed a sell-out national tour in the Australian musical Ladies in Black starring in the lead role of Lisa. This was Sarah’s breakthrough role gaining critical acclaim and adoration by audiences alike proving her star is certainly on the rise.
