2 Autumn 2015 – Summer 2016 -Quite a Year for The Forest Bee!

Since Spring 2014, when The Forest Bee first took flight to spread the word about all of the wonderful courses, groups and workshops held across the Dean, we‘ve been inspired by all the positive comments we‘ve received, the most common being ―I never knew there was so much happening here!‖. We‘ve aspired to help build local communities and challenge the social isolation that so easily happens in rural areas. This in turn supports the local economy and provides inexpensive advertising space for local businesses.

Now in our second year, we continue to go from strength to strength! We applied for numerous grants to help us spread the word with amazing success, the project being considered to be an excellent community resource. Obviously, as it has grown, the workload involved has also grown.

Caroline Jones came on board for our Spring 2015 brochure bringing her wonderful creative and computer skills to produce the print ready version of the brochure. At the start of the year, with our 2nd Autumn edition, just Caroline and I were working on the brochures and website, with Anita helping to keep things organised. Caroline helped out in many other ways until early this year when new members came on board, and she was able to pull back to brochure production only.

I too am looking forward to stepping back a bit now.

Our Management Committee now consists of 5 people:

Jaqui Fabian, front left, one of the instigators of the project

and our main point of contact Anita Herniman, back right, who brought her ‗business

head‘ to help us get better organised. Andrew Embling, back centre, has taken on the social

media role, and assisting with website updating. Carole Bayliss, back left joined us in February to run

the accounts. Paula Holmes, front right, who also joined us in February, is helping with admin and distribution.

Help is still needed though to grow this into an even better resource for the people of the Forest, so if you would like to get involved, either a little or a lot, we‘d love to hear from you. We‘ve listed the roles we need help with in our ‗Vacancies‘ advert on the back page. We hope you enjoy our latest edition, full of great things you can do locally as well as information about some useful local free services. Jaqui We are a not for profit voluntary organisation aiming to help people come together and keep it local!

30 The Forest Bee being about community in the Forest of Dean, I thought I‘d do a round up of a few of the summer events in the Forest of Dean to round off this Summer 2016 brochure.

As with many rural communities we have our fair share of village shows, sometimes they‘re called a carnival as at Parkend where it will be on August Bank Holiday Monday and Ruardean where this years event is on 13th August. Sometimes they‘re called a fete as at Soudley, where the Village Fete is being held on July 16th this year or in Lydney where Lydney Community Centre Summer fete & Dog Show is on June 4th. Of course sometimes they‘re called a show as at Bream where their summer event is Bream Gardening Society Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show, held on the third Saturday in August, that‘s quite a mouthful but it‘s a great show. Either way there‘s lots of village events this summer so if you can get online and find them or keep an eye out in the local papers.
