Marteijn PhD Candidate, School of Divinity, Centre for the Study of World Christianity, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK [email protected] Abstract Palestinian Christians are a minority of approximately 1 or 2% in a context marked by conflict, expulsions, and ongoing emigration. Despite all this, Palestinian Christians have made a significant contribution to society in the spheres of politics, the arts, sci- ence, and social welfare. Moreover, from the 1980s onwards, this Palestinian context of struggle has also been the source for the emergence of a socially and politically committed contextual theology. This article analyses the development of Palestinian contextual theology by examining theological publications by Palestinian theologians. It identifies liberation, reconciliation, witness, ecumenism, and interfaith-dialogue as some of the dominant theological themes. What unites these publications is a theological engagement with the Palestinian Christian identity in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. religions Article Israel and Zionism in the Eyes of Palestinian Christian Theologians Giovanni Matteo Quer Kantor Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry, Tel-Aviv University, Tel Aviv-Yafo 69978, Israel; [email protected] Received: 31 May 2019; Accepted: 1 August 2019; Published: 19 August 2019 Abstract: Christian activism in the Arab–Israeli conflict and theological reflections on the Middle East have evolved around Palestinian liberation theology as a theological–political doctrine that scrutinizes Zionism, the existence of Israel and its policies, developing a biblical hermeneutics that reverses the biblical narrative, in order to portray Israel as a wicked regime that operates in the name of a fallacious primitive god and that uses false interpretations of the scriptures. This article analyzes the theological political–theological views applied to the Arab–Israeli conflict developed by Geries Khoury, Naim Ateek, and Mitri Raheb—three influential authors and activists in different Christians denominations. Besides opposing Zionism and providing arguments for the boycott of Israel, such conceptualizations go far beyond the conflict, providing theological grounds for the denial of Jewish statehood echoing old anti-Jewish accusations. Keywords: Palestine; Israel; Zionism; Christianity; antisemitism 1. Introduction The way Palestinian Christian communities relate to Israel is defined by nationality and religion. As Palestinians, Christians tend to embrace the national narrative that advances a political discourse opposed to Israel’s policies and, at times, also questions its right to exist as a Jewish state. As Christians, Palestinians struggle with religious conceptualizations of Judaism and Zionism that have developed in the Christian world ever since the Holocaust. -

ABSTRACT The Dilemma of Justice: How Religion Influences the Political Environment of Post-1948 Israel and Palestine Sasha A. Ross Thesis Chairperson: Marc H. Ellis, Ph.D. This thesis examines the historical context, ideological traditions, and structures of power that animated relations between Israeli Jews and Arab Palestinians during the twentieth century. Cognizant of the “prisms of pain” that have come to symbolize both Jewish and Palestinian identities, this thesis assumes that identities are in constant flux and are often determined by that which they negotiate against. Its first section considers some historical forces, specific inter-group events, and internal political tensions that intensified the early Jewish and Arab national projects against the British and later pitted each group against the other. The second section examines the values enshrined in the sacred texts of each monotheistic tradition and the extent to which such have influenced the political engagement between Jews, Christians, and Muslims. It concludes that because religion can be used as a political tool of repression, a prophetic spirituality common to all three traditions is necessary for any sustainable project of social transformation and political reconciliation. Dear friends, A warm welcome to all of you to this 27th Annual Award Ceremony of the Olof Palme Prize. A special welcome to Lisbet Palme and other members of the family present here today, and of course to our guests of honour, Gideon Levy and Mitri Rahab. We are happy to see three members of the Swedish government here, as well as members of the Swedish and European parliaments and local governments, and we greet former prime minister Ingvar Carlsson. We also welcome representatives of the diplomatic corps and the Foreign Ministry, civil society and churches, trade unions and Jewish and Palestinian solidarity groups, academ- ia and thinks tanks, media and publishing houses, cultural workers and artists, the public and private sectors, students and peace activists, the Fair Trade movement, and of the EU Commission and the UN High Commissoner for Refugees. What what would the world be without the UNHCR in these times? And we salute Anders Kompass, director for field operations at the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights here present. Earlier today he received the Swedish UN Association´s distiction The UN Friend of the Year for his work to protect children and other vulnerable groups in conflict situtations, in stark contrast to his incompetent supe- riors, During the civil wars in Central America in 1980s Anders saved hundreds of peo- ple fleeing from military death squads and contributed significantly to the regional peace processes. -
