The media portrays Israelis and Palestinians as mortal enemies. However, as these children make music together, they become friends and break down stereotype images of “the other.” Their parents meet with one another and learn that they share common hopes and dreams for their children. Here at home, the Peace Drums Steering Committee comprised of Jews, Christians and Muslims meets monthly to better understand one another and develop friendships.

You will have the opportunity to experience this grassroots peacemaking effort on Wednesday, April 13. That evening, we hope to pack the new auditorium at Cab Calloway School of the Arts as the Peace Drums Steel Band kicks off their concert tour that will include concerts in Philadelphia, Mount Kisco, New York, Abington, Pennsylvania and the University of Delaware.

I hope you will see and hear the sound of peacemaking when the band takes the stage on April 13.

Peter Gildner was raised in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and has lived in Wilmington for the past three months. He attended Westminster for the first time a few months ago at the recommendation of a friend. He became engaged to Alyssa Atanacio this past summer, and together they enjoy hiking and camping. He currently works for Johnson Matthey as a research chemist. He is an avid reader of books of all types and loves watching movies.

Alyssa Atanacio recently moved to the Wilmington area and looks forward to becoming active in Westminster along with her fiancé, Peter Gildner. She is a registered dietician, and her hobbies include hiking, cooking, and listening to music.

Alex Breuer grew up in Newark, Delaware, where his family attended St. John’s Catholic Church. He moved out of the area but returned in 2009 and has been looking for a church since then. He and his wife, Stephanie, found Westminster last year. He had heard of Westminster because of its music program, although he didn’t know about the other qualities that make it special. He works on computational mathematics, mostly battery design, at the Army Research Lab in Aberdeen, Maryland.

Stephanie Breuer is from Carmel, Indiana, and moved with her husband, Alex, to Newark six years ago. They have been attending Westminster for almost a year. The music is what originally drew them to Westminster, but now they love all aspects of the church. She and Alex have been married for seven years and have one daughter, Megan, who is two years old. Stephanie works as a sponsored programs coordinator at the University of Delaware.

Robert Caughey was raised in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, and Fairmont, West Virginia. He has lived in Chadds Ford since 2000 and has been visiting Westminster for the past six months. He was widowed in 2012 after 46 years of marriage. He has two children, Daniel and Christen, and five grandchildren. He is retired, and his hobbies include tennis, part-time work, volunteering, and woodcarving.

March 2016 09 In these times of challenge and change, God’s love for us is a constant reassurance. Westminster Presbyterian Church is a beacon of faith and hope to so many people – in our congregation, our community, and countries around the globe.

Our response to God’s grace with pledges of our financial resources serves as a testimony to our faith and to our commitment to be the hands and feet of Christ in our broken world. As we reflect on all of the blessings in our lives, even in the face of adversity or uncertainty, our gratitude manifests itself in care for others – those we know and so many we will never meet.

Whose lives are changed as a result of our generosity?

• Wilmington children who experience the blessing of safety and hope in the midst of neighborhoods plagued by violence and fear;

• the chronically homeless who struggle for survival on the coldest winter nights and those homeless by circumstance who are working so hard to regain their independence;

• children and elderly people who desperately need nutritious food to sustain their health and capabilities;

• Guatemalan families drinking fresh water instead of suffering health crises caused by the lack of it;

• a family struggling with the unfathomable loss of a member whose life ended much too soon or the grief that accompanies the death of one so dear;

10 1502 W. 13th Street • Wilmington, DE 19806 • (302) 654-5214 • www.wpc.org The Westminster CHIMES

• a person supported by a Stephen Minister in dealing with divorce, illness, or another crisis;

• those of all ages seeking the comfort and hope embodied in worship and opportunities to find a path to faith;

• everyone who finds “family” here in our times together.

All of this, and so much more, is made possible by your generous giving to our amazing church. Thank you to all those listed on the next few pages who have responded to the precious gift of God’s grace with gratitude and generosity.

With deep gratitude,

An Exciting Opportunity is Coming in May – Mark Your Calendars!

Here’s your chance to help build a home for a family in our community, and you can do it right on the Westminster lawn!

On Saturday, May 21, Westminster will partner with Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County to construct framing panels for a home in the Walnut Street Project in Wilmington.

This is a great opportunity to engage in meaningful mission outreach alongside friends and family members! You will be able to sign up for a two-hour shift any time that day. In addition to “construction workers,” we welcome volunteers to staff the sign-in table, food service, childcare, and youth programs.

This will be Westminster’s third “Road Show Build” on our lawn! Our first build was in September 2007, when we constructed two homes in Webster Village dedicated to former member and devoted Habitat volunteer Dick Geuder; the second was in September 2011, when two homes for the Millstone community were constructed in memory of our late Associate Pastor Chad Miller and his brother, Chris.

Mark your calendars now – everyone is welcome, and no building skills are required! Look for more details in the Weekly Word and worship bulletins later this Habitat Road Show Build 2011 month and in the April issue of The Chimes.

Elinor died in 1997 as a nearly 50-year member, serving on the Nominating Committee and as an officer in the Women’s Association. Bill remained a member of Westminster for almost 70 years, serving as a member of Session.

Upon his death, Bill’s estate included a bequest of $25,000 to Westminster in memory of his beloved Elinor. Thanks be to God for these good and faithful servants, whose legacy continues in the mission and ministries of our church.

March 2016 19 An Overflowing Wrap

Did you see the results of the Christmas Boxes program lining the walls of Community Hall on Sunday, December 13? When the final count was tallied, there were orders for 119 families. Thanks to your contributions, the boxes contained gifts you selected for 462 people. The congregation met and exceeded the food goals for Christmas dinner for the recipients: 331 cans of green beans, 270 cans of corn, 244 cans of cranberry sauce, 272 cans of sweet potatoes, 270 cans of fruit, 243 boxes of stuffing, 221 boxes of cereal, 150 packages of donated rolls, 136 cans of cookies baked by Jim Carter’s elves, 146 bags of hard candy wrapped by the Girl Scout Troop that meets at Westminster, and gift cards worth $1,950 from Urban Mission funds. Fantastic generosity!

This mission cannot be wrapped up without thanking the elves who coordinated key parts of the program: Mary Young and Fred Schmitt for managing the computer data, Sara Geuder for managing all of the essentials involving the Wish Gifts, Carol Mosher for managing weekly collection and storage of food and gift donations, Louise Eliason for managing publicity in the Weekly Word e-newsletter, Susan Alexander for assembling referrals for WPC and following up on so many details of the program, Paula Piercy for coordinating the creation of Christmas Cards at the Advent Event, Sandie Reinicker and her elves for managing the Santa gifts for each child who is 12 years of age or younger, Joyce Ruston for packing stationery and calendars for each box, Cathy Higgins for ordering the packing boxes, and Jeff Lippincott and his Phix-It Crew for assembling the boxes and moving the food donations into Grace Hall for the packing event, which was a joyous occasion.

March 2016 21 WPC Bazaar 2015 By Susan Williamson

Westminster’s Annual Bazaar is a unique experience of extraordinary generosity!

It is time to express huge gratitude to the hundreds of people in our congregation and others in our community who make this event an amazing festival of time, talent, and treasure so generously given.

Our bazaar story is actually rooted in the goals of the Rodney Street Chapel Women’s Missionary Society, which was formally organized on February 24, 1886. Nineteen women were determined to contribute to the great work of home and foreign missions. Their dedication and ministry inspired every following generation as each created opportunities to provide support for our church’s mission outreach.

Recipients of the net profit of $11,000 from the 2015 bazaar are carefully chosen by Westminster’s Urban Mission and Church in the World Committees. Surely the 19 women who planted this seed of generosity 130 years ago would be pleased that their core values of cooperation, determination, and caring are still creating powerful results.
