Kent State Baseball Team Sweeps Winthrop Kent State baseball team sweeps Winthrop http://www.ohio.com/cmlink/1.468567?print=1 Click to Print Kent State baseball team sweeps Winthrop Beacon Journal staff report Published: February 22, 2014 - 10:57 PM | Updated: February 23, 2014 - 07:13 AM The Kent State University baseball team completed a two-game weekend sweep of Winthrop with a 9-5 road victory in 15 innings on Saturday afternoon. Eric Dorsch blew the save for the Golden Flashes when Luke Maldanado scored on Brad Kaczka’s single in the bottom of the ninth. The score remained tied at 4-4 for six innings until Cody Koch scored in the top of the 15th inning on one of Winthrop’s four errors. Center fielder Alex Miklos led the Flashes at the plate, going 3-for-6 with three doubles, two walks, an RBI and a run. • The University of Akron evened its record at 2-2 with a 7-1 victory at La Salle. James Sheltrown scored on a fielder’s choice in the first inning, and the Zips did not relinquish the lead. Pat Dyer (1-0) pitched six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits, striking out two and walking two. Matt Rembielak led the Zips at the plate with three hits, a walk and an RBI. Matt LaRocca hit his second home run of the season in the eighth inning. Softball Kent State split two games against two of the nation’s top teams, shutting Kentucky out 3-0 but falling to Michigan 1-0 in nine innings. Emma Johnson struck out 10 in a one-hit shutout with three walks in the first game. Ronnie Ladines didn’t allow an earned run in 8⅔ innings in the second game but suffered the extra-inning loss to Michigan. Basketball University of Akron senior Rachel Tecca was named to the Capital One Academic All-America first team. Tecca became the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder this season while maintaining a 3.89 GPA. She is just the second player in Mid-American Conference history to surpass 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career and is the first Zips women’s basketball player to receive first-team Academic All-America honors. Marshall will be the first UA athlete to play in the game, and one of only two MAC athletes, the other being Ohio University’s D.J. Cooper. Marshall finishes his Akron career as the all-time leader in blocked shots with 368. The All-Star game will be played at 5 p.m. today at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The game is composed of 22 senior student-athletes from NCAA Division I programs across the nation. Track and field The University of Akron track and field team is ranked No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region, ahead of programs such as Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Purdue. The Zips carry a number of nationally ranked athletes, such as No. 2-ranked pole vaulter Shawn Barber, No. 10-ranked 800 runner Gabriel Genovesi and multi-event athletes Alex McCune and Bryan Jones, ranked No. 8 and No. 9 in the decathlon, respectively. The women’s team has also fared well thus far, ranked No. 4 in the region. Lacrosse Archbishop Hoban High School will host the inaugural Midwest Collegiate Women’s Lacrosse Challenge on Saturday.
