Showrunner Brian Fuller wasn't shy about teasing the upcoming third season of his bloody brilliant Hannibal show. We know that it will include Dr. Lecter on the run in Europe with psychiatrist Bedelia Du Maurier after the deadly climax of season 2. We know that it will include elements from the prequel novel by Thomas Harris Hannibal Uprising and trilogy-ender Hannibal, as well as possibly immersion in parts of the Red Dragon. We know that we will be introduced to new characters from the source material like Lady Murasaki and Frances Dolargid. And now we know another exciting news story: Fuller aggressively pursues the musician-turned-actor David Bowie to play an important recurring role in the show. Most people know Bowie as the glam rocker of fame siggy Stardust, but he actually has been acting for nearly five decades, appearing in short films and television shows back in the late 1960s. His first major film role (and, to date, the most memorable) was Jareth King Goblin in The Maze of 1986. Since then, he has starred in such well-known films as The Last Temptation of Christ, Twin Peaks: Walking With Me, Soolander and Prestige. Even so, if he signs hannibal, it will be the first regular television role of his career. (He appeared on Showtime's horror anthology Hunger from 1999-2000, but as a host who presented every episode rather than as an actor. So, what character from Harris's source material is Bowie behind? As Fuller delves into Hannibal Rebellion for inspiration, he looks to the rocker to play a figure from the past cannibal: Robert Lecter, Hannibal's uncle. Robert is the younger brother of Count Lecter and the husband of the mysterious Lady Murasaki, a very formative figure in the life of a young Hannibal. Uncle Robert has little presence in the source material: in the novel, he is killed during a confrontation with a butcher shortly after Hannibal comes to live with him and his wife; in the film, he dies before Hannibal arrives at the estate. The fact that Fuller is pursuing someone as famous as Bowie to play Robert indicates that Hannibal's uncle will have a much bigger role in this iteration of the story. Bowie was first considered for the role in the preparation for Season 2. When plans to introduce the character were postponed for a year, negotiations with the actor were postponed. But now that Fuller has decided to include In Season 3, Fuller approached Bowie again for the character. Bowie is reported to be very very in appearance on the show, and the decision will come down to the question of planning and availability. While we wait for the official word on whether Bowie will join Hannibal, let's imagine how the glam rocker will fit into the stylized world of the show. Since Fuller essentially updates the character from scratch, no one knows what Robert will look like1. Robert is a bloodthirsty monster. Of all Bowie's films, one most similar in tone to Hannibal Fuller (video evidence below) is definitely the 1983 gothic vampire thriller Hunger. In it, Bowie played John Blaylock, the immortal lover of sadistic vampire Catherine Deneuve, Miriam. Together, John and Miriam preyed on the weak, inviting them to a lush townhouse, feeding on their blood and then disposing of their bodies in an incinerator. Perhaps the serial murder runs in the family Lecter, and Hannibal learns everything he knows from his murderous uncle2. Robert is a seductive manipulator. Again, maybe Robert's sadism will not be of a physical kind, but a mental one. He could be a master manipulator who bends young, impressionable minds to his will and rejoices in complex people with seemingly intractable puzzles (like Jareth in Larbirinet). Hannibal's obsession with psychology may have stemmed from his adoptive father's own twisted psychopathy.3 Robert is a man of science, headed at the level. Or maybe Robert will surprise us all without being sadistic at all. Bowie's role as Nicola Tesla in Christopher Nolan's Prestige was perhaps the actor's most normal character - the actor was unrecognizable with a mustache and harsh expression instead of his typical brilliance and brightness. It may be fun to see Bowie play against type again, with Robert as straight-laced and taciturn as Hannibal vicious and eloquent. Robert is a haunted law officer. It would be great if Hannibal's uncle turned out to be a lawyer in the way of the killer, who turned out to be his own nephew. Bowie played an FBI haunted agent in the prologue/epilogue of the movie Fire Walk with Me. We'd like to see a cat-and-mouse game between Bowie and Mads Mikkelsen as an uncle and nephew break bread together, with Robert oblivious to the fact that the monster he hunts is his own flesh and blood.5 Robert is an androgynous singer. Or there is always a chance that Uncle Robert will be a character who brings frivolity to Hannibal's brutal world with his gonzo personality and artsy rock music. Heck, this isn't even the first time a character in a Brian Fuller production has erupted in a song: It's Christine Chenoweth as Olive Snook on Fuller's Pushing Daisies. Despite the fact that the show itself was not even a musical, Olive (and only Olive) from time to time expressed her emotions through the song. Perhaps the only way Robert will be able to express his concern about the monstrous actions his nephew will sing about them. Images: Lucasfilm (2); MGM; Warner Bros.; Cinema New Line; RCA Watch out for the latest daily buzz with buzzFeed Daily Newsletter! Source: Comedy Central's Hannibal Buress has become one of the comedy's biggest presences over the past year, catapulted to his role as a regular on Comedy Central in Broad City. His absent-minded yet poignant observational sense of humor has him existing outside the standard spheres of his craft, making it a singularly unique comic in a game where everything else tends to feel the same. He's been around the fringe for some time, having worn small roles on 30 Rock, Bob Burgers, Mindy Project, and Louis. Now though, he gets his chance to finally be the center of our attention and attention. The show is called Why? With Hannibal Buresia, and based on early conversations, it will be nothing but crazy. Since each episode is filmed on the day of its broadcast, critics have not received (and will not) receive screechers; everything we see is being considered for the first time since the premiere on July 8. The past is that Buress has been a low-key brand and sell the show in nothing but vague terms. In one recent interview with the AV Club, he went about as much detail as he would go about the series. It will be some sketches, some interviews, some things people on the street. This is going to be my show. Yes man. I don't know why we should do this... people asking, What is a show? I don't know, it would be funny. I don't like selling it. (Laughs.) It's just going to be funny shit from my point of view and that's what people can expect. Buress is a comedian who in many ways defies convention. His show isn't looking to be a sketch show a la Inside Amy Schumer or Key and Peel. He also doesn't look to be a semi-serious retrospective on his life in Louis' form. Why? Will instead, it's a show that embodies the spirit of Hannibal Buress as a comedian: humor stripped down to its weirdest, most entertaining elements. Its main elements lie in observation, something that we hope will shine through in a project that will be entirely its own. Watch any of his standup and you see a comic book that breaks down and analyzes everything in his life. From describing how other comedians tell jokes to wondering why the National Spelling Bee is on ESPN, its humor is a constant stream of analysis; think Jerry Seinfeld's trademark What's the deal with paste thing here? On a modern, complex level. Even knowing all this though, we still don't know what why? will look in his performance. Despite everything we know, this may end up being a scattered mess of one-liners lacking structure. Any show that shoots and airs on the same day certain liberation to be able to take in the new show without having critics whisper in our ear. Any opinion, forming our opinion, will be completely organic and not under the influence of hype or criticism. Instead, we will judge on the basis of the sheer merit of Bures's comedic vision. Win, lose or do, if there is one thing Hannibal Buress has consistently done throughout his career, he has been staying true to his own unique brand of comedy. Why? won't sell anything to us other than pure entertainment, and in the process it could inadvertently end up breaking down the mold for Comedy Central shows in the process. From chicken to borscht to wonton soup, just about every culture has its own way of warming up with a comforting bowl of something delicious. NATIONAL HEMP DAY – This stuff can do anything! It’s been a part of human civilization for thousands of years and continues to amaze. It’s used to make clothes, CBD, paint and biofuels. It’s even being used now as a replacement for concrete (called hempcrete). Hemp got a bad rap when it was lumped into the same classification as heroin and LSD, but growing it was legalized again a few years ago. • 228 Hannibal, Seasons
The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies 16 (Autumn 2017) Hannibal, Seasons 1-3 (NBC, 2012-15) The TV series Hannibal was developed by Bryan Fuller and aired on NBC from April 2013 to August 2015. Unfortunately, the series was cancelled after Season 3 due to falling ratings, although it is now available on DVD and Netflix (and there are rumours that the show may be resurrected in the near future).1 Hannibal focuses on the character that first made his fictional debut in Thomas Harris’s Red Dragon (1981) and went on to appear in the novels The Silence of the Lambs (1988), Hannibal (1999), and Hannibal Rising (2006). Dr Hannibal Lecter then attained even wider fame via the novels’ five cinematic adaptations. Lecter (played here by Mads Mikkelsen) is a brilliant, elegant, and refined psychiatrist and an exceptional cook, with a gorgeous office and a polished, almost sterile house in Baltimore. The series functions as a prequel to the books and four of the films: Hannibal collaborates with the FBI in order to help capture serial killers, but he is himself a manipulative and sadistic murderer who cannibalises his victims’ organs. Hannibal is therefore a therapist who can dissect not only the minds of his patients and adversaries, but also the tissues of their very bodies.2 Each of the titles of almost every episode is the name of a dish, such as ‘Amuse Bouche’, ‘Mukozuke’, and ‘Antipasto’ (respectively in French, Japanese, and Italian). During the first two seasons, each episode largely consists of an investigation into the murders committed by a specific killer, although there are also a number of overarching storylines that span each season and portray the evolving relationships between the main characters.
