The Loafer’s Veteran of the Week is Otis E Wright. Wright is a lifelong resident of Saltville, Virginia. He was born on July 29, 1932 to Lee and Ada Wright. His first job was at the age of 19 in New York; he worked for the US Gypsum Plant. He worked in the maintenance department for a few months where he was called to serve his country in the army. At age 20, Wright was stationed in Missouri for bootcamp and then was deployed to Korea. His role was to provide support for the military campaign in Korea. His daughter mentions that he specifically remembers “walking a whole lot.” Wright’s service lasted from 1952 to 1954. He received two medals while in the army, but he comments that “there were many who sacrificed their lives and did not return home.” To these lost Americans, he is grateful, and he states that they are the real heroes. His last days in the army were in , where he awaited to return home. After returning to the states, he went to work as a truck driver hauling firewood. In the 1960’s, he returned to work at the Gypsum Plant in Saltville, Virginia and worked in the salt mines and on the yard until he retired in 1983. Wright also spent some time pumping gas at Duncan’s gas station. As for today, he now enjoys his time spent at home by working in the yard, listening to music, and playing his . Mr. Wright’s children, Debbie, Vicki, and Kim nominated him for the veteran of the week in honor of his birthday. They remarked that, “our dad is our hero,” and they wish him a very happy birthday. From the Loafer staff, we hope you had a great birthday as well, Mr. Wright!
