A 10th Anniversary Celebration Harlem Book Fair 2008 QBR The Black Book Review in association with the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture Events from July 17th - 20th West 135th Street • Fifth Avenue to Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard Harlem, New York About The Harlem Book Fair History • The Harlem Book Fair was founded in 1999 by QBR The Black Book Review as a community event and forum for African American readers to discover, experience and celebrate African American history and culture through books. • The success of that first book fair began what has become a week long event and the country’s largest community gathering of African American readers and book lovers. It has evolved into a national brand that is expanding into new markets each year. The Harlem Book Fair now draws over 50,000 attendees, with an additional viewership of over 15 million via C-SPAN’s Book TV. Mission Statement of Harlem Book Fair • To broaden access for family literacy and literature awareness: putting more books into more reader’s hands, literature programs, and parent-support events. • To help develop and identify new reader and youth markets • To develop relationships with publishers and literacy advocates throughout the world • To expand branding and affinity opportunities to the African American and Latino family market • To expand and institutionalize the Harlem Book Fair as a world-class literature and literacy event • In tandem with its literacy mission, the Harlem Book Fair will actively support the Harlem community through its affiliation with various community organizations. The Event Site The 2008 Book Fair will offer two avenue blocks along West 135th Street with tents, pavilions of books, food, and cultural concessions. Fair space has more than doubled since its inception. Events will also be held at the Countee Cullen Library, the National Black Theatre, Symphony Space, and other venues throughout New York City. Our Event Partner The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is a national research library devoted to collecting, preserving, and providing access to resources documenting the history and experiences of peoples of African descent throughout the world. The Center's collections first won international acclaim in 1926 when the personal collection of the distinguished Puerto Rican-born Black scholar and bibliophile, Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, was added to the Division of Negro Literature, History and Prints of the 135th Street Branch of The New York Public Library. Today, the Schomburg Center contains over 10,000,000 items and provides services and programs for constituents from the United States and abroad. The Center has been a partner in the development of the Book Fair since its inception. Our Media Partner C_SPAN's Book TV offers live telecasts from the Harlem Book Fair each year. Broadcasting from the Schomburg Center's Langston Hughes Auditorium, Book TV beams our critically acclaimed panel discussions and author interviews to over 52 million viewers nationally, of which 29% are African American. The Harlem Book Fair is telecast live, and then re-broadcasted in rotation throughout the C-Span program schedule, ensuring maximum visibility for sponsors, authors, publishers, and viewers. Each weekend, Book TV features up to 48 hours of nonfiction books from Saturday 8:00 AM to Monday 8:00 AM ET.
