Page 2 of 44 Abstract Many of the arthropod species that are important pests of agriculture and forestry are impossible to discriminate morphologically throughout all of their life stages. Some cannot be differentiated at any life stage. Over the past decade, DNA barcoding has gained increasing adoption as a tool to both identify known species and to reveal cryptic taxa. Although there has not been a focused effort to develop a barcode library for them, reference sequences are now available for 77% of the 409 species of arthropods documented on major pest databases. Aside from developing the reference library needed to guide specimen identifications, past barcode studies have revealed that a significant fraction of arthropod pests are a complex of allied taxa. Because of their importance as pests and disease vectors impacting global agriculture and forestry, DNA barcode results on these arthropods have significant implications for quarantine detection, regulation, and management. -

NATIONALIS PRAGAE VOL. 39 1977 A contribution to the knowledge of the tribe Gnorimoschemini of Far East (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) DALIBOR POVOLNY College of Agriculture, Brno Although mur.h attention has been paid tc the tribe Gnorimoschemini of Ge lechiidae during the last twenty years, practically nothing was knoWii, so far, about its members of Eastern Asia and Japan. A few individuals of the genus Scrobipalpa Janse were known from Japan, but no series basic for serious investigations were available. During the recent three years, limited series of moths of this tribe could be concentrated, mainly due to the efforts of Japanese lepidopterists. This material supplemented by a few other individuals is the basis for this paper. It coulQ. be objected that compared with materials studied and/or available from other mainly eremic parts of Asia this material is limited. This is certainly true. But this difficulty is obviously caused not only by possibly limited efforts in collecting Gnorimoschemini in Eastern Asia, but also by the fact that both number and density of the species there is limited, too. - The reasons to publish this contribution are mainly two: First, it is evident that especially the synu~ies of this tribe in the arboreal zone or tier of the Far East show clear taxonomic and biogeographic affinities to the adequate synusies of the Western Palaearctis, mainly of Europe as indicated yet by the investigations in the Gno rimoschemini of Mongolia (Povolny, 1973). Therefore also the species of the genus Oaryocol11,m Gregor & Povolny are included, although it was impossible for the time being to identify all of them exactly. -

January Review of Butterfly, Moth and Other Natural History Sightings 2020
Review of butterfly, moth and other natural history sightings 2020 January High pressure lay over southern parts of the country at the beginning of the year, bringing dry, settled conditions though generally with plenty of cloud. This gradually moved away south-eastwards allowing frontal systems in from the west, and from the 7th to the 17th the weather was mild, unsettled and very windy at times. More settled weather returned between the 18th and 25th as high pressure dominated again, but the rest of the month saw windy conditions and some rain, though it was mild. Despite the mild spells there were no migrant moths noted and those species that were recorded were typical of the early season: Epiphyas postvittana (Light Brown Apple Moth) (on the 1st), Mottled Umber (on the 3rd), Spring Usher (on the 5th), the Chestnut (on the 8th), Winter Moth (on the 12th), Early Moth and Pale Brindled Beauty (on the 21st), Tortricodes alternella (Winter Shade), Double-striped Pug and Satellite (on the 30th) and Pyrausta aurata (Small Purple & Gold) found indoors on the 31st. The only early stage noted that was attributable to this year was a tenanted mine of Ectoedemia erythrogenella (Coast Bramble Pigmy) at Samphire Hoe. The only butterfly recorded was a Small Tortoiseshell in a garden in Hythe on the 10th, whilst the first Buff-tailed Bumblebee was noted at Seabrook on the 12th. Also of note was a Common Toad at Folkestone Downs on the 2nd and Grey Seals were seen off Seabrook and the Willop Outfall during the month, whilst Common Seal was resting on the beach at Princes Parade on the 20th. -

OVERVIEW OF LEAF MINER FAUNA IN SERBIA Jovan DOBROSAVLJEVIC1*, Cedomir MARKOVIC1, Stefan BOJIC2 1University of Belgrade, Faculty of Forestry, KnezaViseslava 1, 11030 Belgrade, Serbia 2University of East Sarajevo, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Forestry, VukaKaradzica 30, 71123 East Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract Due to their specific lifestyle, frequency of occurrence, and the damage that they cause on plants, leaf miners have been investigated by many scientists in Serbia. Unfortunately, the overview of research on their fauna in Serbia has not been done yet. Therefore, based on the data from the literature sources and the results of our research, the first overview of leaf miner fauna research in Serbia was made. It was found that 363 species of leaf miners were ascertained in Serbia so far. They are classified as follows: 270 species from 26 families of the order Lepidoptera, 61 species from 5 families of the order Diptera, 21 species from 3 families of the order Coleoptera, and 11 species from 1 family of the order Hymenoptera. The majority of species of the order Lepidoptera belongs to the families Gracillariidae (71), Nepticulidae (61) and Coleophoridae (37), of the order Diptera to the family Agromyzidae (53), and from the order Coleoptera to the families Curculionidae (12) and Chrysomelidae (7). All species of the order Hymenoptera (11) belong to the family Tenthredinidae. Monophagous and Oligophagous species are dominant among the identified species of leaf miners in Serbia. The majority of the species (57%) develop on woody plants. Most of them (30) on the species of the genus Quercus, Prunus (20), Malus (19), and Populus (19). -

I started as young scientist on the married and went to the Far East of Russia instead of Gornotaezhnaya station and after three years continued returning to Ukraine. Now, looking back, I can say that work in the Institute of Biology and Soil Science. My it was undoubtedly a stroke of good fortune, because main investigations have been the moths of the family the fauna of this region allowed many discoveries and Gelechiidae. -

Bella & O. Karsholt Abstract The authors report the results of field research on Gelechiidae from the “Pantano Longarini” salt marsh (southeastern Sicily). The area is located inland to the “Pantani della Sicilia Sud-Orientale” regional nature reserve. A total of twenty-four species are recognized; among the recorded taxa Scrobipalpa peterseni (Povolny´, 1965) is new to Europe, Scrobipalpa bigoti (Povolny´, 1973), Scrobipalpa bradleyi Povolny´ 1971, Scrobipalpa spergulariella (Chrétien, 1910) and Scrobipalpa superstes Povolny´, 1977 are new records for Sicily and Italy, and Syncopacma sangiella (Stainton, 1863) and Scrobipalpa monochromella (Constant, 1895) are new for the Sicilian fauna. -

Furthermore differences in host- plant selection and in the colouration of the larvae are discussed. Moth and genitalia of both species are figured. Einleitung Die trophisch an Caryophyllaceae gebundene Gattung Caryocolum GREGOR & POVOLNY 1954, gilt auf Grund zweier Revisionarbeiten (KLIMESCH, 1953-1954; HUEMER 1988) als gut bekannt. Mehrere taxonomisch schwierige Probleme bei Arten des Alpenraumes konnten rezent gelöst werden (HUEMER 1989, 1991;HUEMER & LUQUET 1992) und wir haben somit heute ein wohl annähernd vollständiges Bild über Artenbestand (37 spp.) sowie ökologische Ansprüche der einzelnen Taxa in den Alpen. Die hier behandelten Taxa C. viscariella (STAINTON, 1855) und albifaciella (HEINEMANN 1870) sp.rev. wurden von HUEMER (1988) synonymisiert, allerdings unter Hinweis auf geringe Unterschiede in Habitus und Genitalmorphologie (basierend auf lediglich 1 ö" und 3 9 9, Genitalpräparaten). In den vergangenen Jahren sammelte daher der Autor umfangreicheres Material an verschiedenen Lokalitäten, um weitere Informationen zur Variabilität von viscariella zu erhalten.
