Via email: 18 February 2009 Dear Mr Request for Information – RFI20080111 Thank you for your request of 22nd January 2009 under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 seeking the following information: Is it possible to tell me how much the BBC spends on entering external awards, for example the Sony Radio Academy awards, BAFTA Television awards, Online Journalism awards etc? Would you be able to break it down to radio, TV and online entries? By way of background, it may be helpful for me to provide some explanation of the way in which the BBC manages entry into external awards and how such expenditure is recorded. The BBC submits entries to a huge number of awards across multiple divisions. Entry into awards is coordinated differently within the BBC, depending on the awards in question and there is no general ledger code for this type of expenditure which means that we are unable to obtain a report on this category of expenditure from our central finance system. Entry into a number of identified “priority” awards is coordinated centrally by BBC Vision’s Awards Unit – this includes the BAFTA Television Awards, RTS Programme Awards and international events such as the International Emmys and the Banff World Television Festival. Where this is the case, information about the cost of entering these awards is centrally collated and readily accessible. Entry into a wide range of other awards is either partly or wholly managed locally by individual divisions. In this case cost information is not necessarily collated centrally by that team and is therefore not readily accessible. -

The year before I had listened with excitement to the launch of our local commercial station, Liverpool's Radio City, and wanted to find out what other stations I might be able to pick up. In those days the Guide covered TV as well as radio, which could only manage to fill two pages – but then there were only 19 “ILR” stations. -

Is This Jazz? Newport Jazz Festival ’17 Cecile McLorin Salvant, credit: Norman Grant The jazz world descended upon Newport to see some of the music’s legends as well as many of its rising stars. As is always the case with such events, the hardest part of the weekend was catching a significant portion of each great set before running full speed to another stage to try and catch the next historic moment that could be unfolding. It was tough to get it all in, but here are some of the highlights. The festival kicked off Friday with a stellar set from the Jimmy Greene Quartet on the Fort stage. Greene — the saxophonist and band leader — took his quartet through a set of terrific originals, including the flowing groove of “Second Breakfast” off his latest release Flowers. Later on, Cecile McLorin Salvant and the Aaron Diehl Trio took the stage and shattered minds with their beautiful and complex arrangements, including her profound version of “Wives And Lovers.” Having a soft spot for the New Orleans clarinet style, Evan Christopher’s Clarinet Road & New Orleans Brass was a much- appreciated addition to the Quad stage with a killer band, locked-in swing and loose group improvisations. The day closed out with Joey DeFrancesco + The People, who were by far the funkiest, most swinging band of the day. DeFrancesco is a monster organ player who demonstrated why he has redefined how the instrument is approached. After leaving the Fort I headed over to watch Rhiannon Giddens and Trombone Shorty each play very different, but equally excellent sets at the Tennis Hall of Fame. -

The process will only allow a carrier to hold operating authority without insurance reflected on our Licensing and Insurance database for up to three (3) days. Revocation decisions will be tied to our enforcement program which will focus on the operations of uninsured carriers. This process will further ensure that the public is adequately protected in case of a motor carrier crash. Accordingly, we are adopting the following procedure for revocation of authority; 1) The first notice will go out three (3) days after FMCSA receives notification from the insurance company that the carrier's policy will be cancelled in 30 days. This notification informs the carrier that it must provide evidence that it is in full compliance with FMCSA's insurance regulations within 30 days. 2) If the carrier has not complied with FMCSA's insurance requirements after 30 days, a final decision revoking the operating authority will be issued. The complainant requested the cost of entries to the Sony Radio Academy Awards. The BBC explained the information was covered by the derogation and excluded from FOIA. 2. The Commissioner’s decision is that this information was held by the BBC for the purposes of ‘journalism, art or literature’ and did not fall inside FOIA. He therefore upholds the BBC’s position and requires no remedial steps to be taken in this case. Request and response 3. On 26 September 2015, the complainant wrote to the BBC and requested information in the following terms: ‘In a previous response to a FoI request [Ref RFI20121550] you disclosed a breakdown of the cost of entries to the Sony Radio Academy Awards for 2012 broken down by radio station as well as the cost of providing staff with tickets to attend the event. Could you please supply me with a comparable response for the 2014 awards?’ 4. On 20 October 2015 the BBC responded and explained that it did not believe that the information was caught by FOIA because it was held for the purposes of ‘art, journalism or literature’. 5. Featuring masterworks of the last fifty years of our repertoire performed by some of the most significant artists of our generation, Focus Day 2011 marks a monumental achievement for the Percussive Arts Society and its membership. As the Percussive Arts Society as a whole cel- ebrates its 50th anniversary, it is fitting that the New Music Research Committee is celebrating the “Five Decades of New Music for th 25 Anniversary of Focus Day (formerly New Music/Research Day) at PASIC. Since its founding by Stuart Smith in 1986, the mission of the New Music/Research Committee has been to present creative, innovative, and imaginative programming that exposes new compositional trends while Percussion 1961–2011” maintaining connections to the historically significant composers and performers of our field who together shaped the contemporary art-form of new music for percussion. Certainly, Focus Day 2011 defines this mission in every way. Since 1994 the British media have been charged with fail- ing to report genocide; yet a focus on print media has created a void in under- standing how BBC’s Newsnight covered events.
