  • Chapter 2 China's Cars and Parts
Chapter 2 China’s cars and parts: development of an industry and strategic focus on Europe Peter Pawlicki and Siqi Luo 1. Introduction Initially, Chinese investments – across all industries in Europe – especially acquisitions of European companies were discussed in a relatively negative way. Politicians, trade unionists and workers, as well as industry representatives feared the sell-off and the subsequent rapid drainage of industrial capabilities – both manufacturing and R&D expertise – and with this a loss of jobs. However, with time, coverage of Chinese investments has changed due to good experiences with the new investors, as well as the sheer number of investments. Europe saw the first major wave of Chinese investments right after the financial crisis in 2008–2009 driven by the low share prices of European companies and general economic decline. However, Chinese investments worldwide as well as in Europe have not declined since, but have been growing and their strategic character strengthening. Chinese investors acquiring European companies are neither new nor exceptional anymore and acquired companies have already gained some experience with Chinese investors. The European automotive industry remains one of the most important investment targets for Chinese companies. As in Europe the automotive industry in China is one of the major pillars of its industry and its recent industrial upgrading dynamics. Many of China’s central industrial policy strategies – Sino-foreign joint ventures and trading market for technologies – have been established with the aim of developing an indigenous car industry with Chinese car OEMs. These instruments have also been transferred to other industries, such as telecommunications equipment.

THE WAY OF CHERY TO ACHIEVE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL AUTO BRAND IN CHINA Thesis Yan Tao Degree Programme in International Business International Marketing Management SAVONIA UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES Business and Administration, Varkaus Degree Programme, Bachelor of Business Administration, International Business, International Marketing Management Author Yan Tao Title of Study The Way of Chery to Achieve the Most Successful Auto Brand in China Type of Project Date Pages Thesis 14.12.2010 62+3 Supervisor of Study Executive organization Virpi Oksanen Abstract The automobile market in China is in the state of growth. The development of new energy vehicles and the automobile industry is taking place in the forms of regrouping and restructuring. This offers Chery a great opportunity to develop and promote the brand. As one of the most influential and famous auto brand, Chery Auto has achieved an extraordinary growth rate and has become the pride of Chinese national automobile industry. Nevertheless, there is still certain potential in product quality, service and business culture which develops the brand image further. In consequence, issues regarding to manufacturing, service and business culture are needed to improve and strengthening. However, the brand advantage of Chery Auto is not protruding. Compared with international automotive corporations, Chery Auto is not dominant in brand recognition and brand core value. Furthermore, multi-brand strategy leads to dilution of major brands. There are many sub-brands under Chery; nevertheless, no sub-brand achieves big sales. None of Chery Auto’s four sub-brands, Chery, Rely, Karry or Riich, is dominant in the automobile market. Its position in market is not stable.

  • China Light Vehicle Sales Update
May 2018 China Light Vehicle Sales Update Impact of Import Duty Cut on Chinese Vehicle Market China’s Passenger Vehicle (PV) sales in April 2018 rose by 11.6% year‐on‐year (YoY) to 1.96 mn units. The Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sector grew by 2.5% YoY, pushing the overall Light Vehicle (LV) market up by 10.4% YoY, on total sales of 2.25 mn units in the month. While LV production increased by 12% in April, in year-to-date (YTD) terms, output grew by just 1.1% as the poor Q1 performance impacted the overall result. The seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) of LV sales in April was 30.7 mn units, 6% up on March. Wholesales surged in April, but resulted from dealerships restocking their inventories, after a sluggish Q1. The Chinese government announced on 22 May that the customs duty for CBUs will be reduced from 25% or 20% to 15% from 1 July this year, and that the duty for auto parts will be cut simultaneously to 6%. This adjustment means that Passenger Vehicles (PVs) will be taxed at 15% from July, instead of the current 25%, leaving the industry wondering how the overall PV market be impacted. The key question is whether the tax cut will stimulate demand for imported vehicles, to the detriment of locally produced models. If we turn our attention to the insurance data, it becomes obvious that imports are essentially a niche market in China. Around 1.13 mn imported vehicles were registered in 2017, accounting for just 4.7% of the overall PV market.

Washington D.C. July 16, 2008 Dr. Tom (Qingjiu) Tao Assistant Professor of Management, Lehigh University Testimony before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission Regarding Research and Development and Technological Advances in Key Industries in China Overview of the Chinese Automobile Industry For automakers seeking relief from a global price war caused by overcapacity and recession, China is almost the only game in town. With just ten vehicles per 1,000 residents in China as of 2006 (as opposed to 940 in the United States and 584 in Western Europe), there seems to be plenty of growth opportunities. Not surprisingly, nearly every major auto company has jumped into China, quickly turning the country into a new battleground for dominance in this global industry. In addition, China has become a major auto parts supplier. Of the world's top 100 auto parts suppliers, 70% have a presence in China. China vaulted past Japan in 2006 to become the world’s number-two vehicle market (after the United States). In 2006, car sales in China were up 37%, and sales of all vehicles including trucks and buses (7.2 million in total) were up 25%. Reports of record sales, new production, and new venture formations were plenty. After China’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, the industry has been advancing by leaps and bounds. At the global level, China has moved to the third position in production behind the United States and Japan, and is slated to produce 8.5 to 9 million vehicles in 2007.
