2 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz PRESIDENTS WELCOME A warm welcome to Shepherds Park to everyone from Ellerslie AFC for today’s game. I hope to see you in the clubrooms after the game for a drink and something to eat. Ellerslie is a club we respect and like in the NRFL and we expect a competitive game today after winning the first round 1-0 away. Elsewhere in the club, our premier Reserves team is playing their cup final against Ellerslie on a date TBC at the end of the month, which will be another competitive game and will add an edge to today’s fixture between the two sides. Make sure you give the lads as much support as you can today and at the end of the month! The Red & White Army was out in force at Central FC on Sunday last week, where the noise created in the stands converted the ground into a Red & White bastion. The support was stirring stuff and a great message to send to the football community of Auckland, that as a club we are on the rise and have something special. Make sure you reserve Wednesday 21st August for the club AGM and the 28th September for junior and senior prizegiving. Both are important events in the club and we hope to see you participate. Summer football is ready to kick off soon – see Gareth to enrol your mixed sevens team or keep an eye on the website for Ross to publish details of the junior programme and academy details. Red & White Army heroes of the week: Glen Barlow and Maarten Niewland. Glen runs the Birkenhead websites and all things technical and does a fantastic job of keeping the content fresh and updated while also managing the 13 metro side and has coached since his son James was playing midgets. Maarten is a long term Birkenhead member, player and coach who not only coaches the 17th Division II side but also manages the O35 Boca side (a much harder proposition) and still finds the time between injuries to keep playing himself. I thank both members for their support, passion and energy not to mention the time they dedicate to making the club a better place. Dave Newick - Club President

4 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz FIRST TEAM REPORT Welcome to Warren and his team/supporters for today’s game. Like every game we’ve played against each other over the last four seasons I’m sure there won’t be much in it. Our last home game was a close fought 2-1 win against Hamilton Wanderers with two goals to Dylan. I thought we responded well after the ASB loss and just did enough against a strong Hamilton team. Then we managed a 2-1 win against Central at Kiwitea Street with goals to Jack and Doobie. To be fair we dominated the first half and could have been up a few more, with Central scoring in injury time. A good win for us though. We still have a long way to go, and we are lucky enough to have a full squad available with everyone fighting for a spot. Our Ressies are currently second in the league and in their Cup final, so things are going well. Thanks for all the support, both home and away, and I know I say it every week but it makes a difference to the players and staff that there is so much pride in our club. Cheers Hobbo

FIRST TEAM REPORT – MANAGERS SAY! Kia ora, tena koutou and welcome to Warren and his charge’s for todays clash at the “Home of Football’’. As another torrid season nears it’s end, I do feel for Ellerslie in their situation and expect no less from these guys in what we at Birko have come to know as frantic match ups! Regardless of the good relationship between our clubs, we do find ourselves at different ends of the league with both needing 3 points today. Welcome also to Zac and assistants Rajesh and Allan, thank you for your participation and time.

VS HAMILTON WANDERERS 03 AUGUST 2013 After a fortnight of football better forgotten, we hosted Mark Cossey’s Wanderers. Another tussle that has over the recent seasons become a somewhat fixture through ASB Chatham Cup and League challenges. The first 45 minutes proved this to be true with our Waikato nemesis putting us to the pump physically. To go to the shed at nil all showed that our lads had come to play! Continued ... www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 5 6 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz Honestly our lads fitness and desire came to the party and Player of the Day, Dylan Windust, with a second stanza brace bought the game to the good result … a football result! This was a great conclusion to a poor run and puts us in good stead for the challenges that will follow. VS CENTRAL 11 AUGUST 2013 Upon arriving at the venue, “Freyberg Field” the atmosphere was what somewhat “droll”. Three patrons setting up nets and flags with grossly deflated balloons welcoming, or not, those attending! An aged or shall we call it, experienced Central team took the field and their intentions were clear! Without bad-mouthing officials, I will go on record as saying some “reputations ruled” the first 15 minutes rather than the sport, considering some players of higher levels showed (to be polite) “clumsiness” in their defensive format! To be two goals up at half time and could well have more, the work rate of James Lawson, Sam Margetts and a high flying attacking midfielder PLAYERS OF THE DAY Jack Hobbo-McV, with an outstanding Doob, Vs Three Kings Godwin Darkwa Jake, Ash and Wally across the back with the Vs East Coast Bays Dylan Windust grafting midfield of Jasp, Morgs and the ever Vs Sam Jasper vigorous Windy, the lads did the job although Vs Manurewa Bill Tuiloma a final stressful 8 minutes helped the heart Vs Waitakere Dylan Windust rate, but! 10 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz BIRKO RESSIES Central United V Birkenhead Reserves, Croation Cultural Club 10/8/2013 Despite the forecast of heavy rain and high winds the game ended up being played in good conditions on an impressive pitch. With two more league games to go and with a mathematical chance of finishing top, the team were determined to put the loss to Hamilton behind them and focus on this result. Once again we started really well and within two minutes Paul Park was through with a perfect chance to gain an early lead. Unfortunately the keeper managed to get a fingernail to the ball and tipped it around the post for a corner. We continued to play great football and put more pressure on the Central goal. Jamie Shields held his wide position well this week after having his GPS rebooted by the coaching staff, and was dangerous down the left, combining skillfully with several other players to create a range of opportunities that should really have netted at least two goals. Frustratingly Central went into the break 1–0 up after a rare corner kick was headed home! The mood in the changing room was upbeat at half time owing to the fact we were aware of how good we were playing and how positive the team were remaining on the field. The advice was keep it going the way you are and the rewards will come. Sure enough, just when it looked like we might need to bring Nathan out of defence to nick a goal, he found himself part of a forward movement that ultimately had him inside the Central area to head home a Jack Holbutt cross. We might need to check his aboriginal roots given his wandering; or he’s been talking to Jamie! With the game locked up we battered the Central goal. Finally a ball was drifted in to the box and Conor got something on to it (but not his left foot) to give us the lead. The last twenty minutes was not one of the many nail biters that we have had but it was still a relief to hear the final whistle. Outstanding performances from Nathan, Jamie, Paul, Harry, Jack…and Nick (even though he was spotted racing down the right wing which is a long way from left back… and then shooting, and then missing by a mile…and then almost snapping his Achilles in the process!!). Nathan was player of the day-well deserved. Rather surprisingly Hamilton drew their home game and so this weekend’s game is another must win because there is still a chink of light showing through the door! Terry Taylor

www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 11 12 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz LADIES FOOTBALL 2013 LADIES DIVISION 1 4TH AUGUST 2013 – VS. ORATIA RESULT: 1 V 0 WIN Initially a catch up league game ended up having a far more important underlying significance – a must win to make the top four playoffs. With the team sitting fifth, one point behind West Auckland who had finished their league season, and a distinct feeling Northern Football were not going to provide us an opportunity to play both of our catch up matches, we needed at the very least a draw to go ahead of West Auckland on goal difference. A few positional changes were required, mainly brought about through injuries, and as such Lisa Witberg moved up into the central midfield position and Kitty Buchanan dropped back into central defence, with both players having positive performances in their new locations. Birkenhead played by far the better style of football, and looked the better quality side on the field, however not unfamiliar from the week prior seemed unable to find the back of the net. To give credit to Oratia’s keeper, who I believe was only 14 years old, she definitely kept her team in the game pulling off some fantastic saves, and was by far their best player. With approximately 15 to go Birko finally broke the dead lock from a Lorna Selby corner, (about the twentieth of the match), the corner kick ricocheting off the front post to the feet

www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 13 LADIES FOOTBALL 2013 continued of Lisa Witberg who slotted it home. Player of the day performance from Caroline Anderson in the sweeper position, who calmly controlled her back line, and ensured the ball was played out through the backs and not just booted away – just the way the coaches like it. 11TH AUGUST 2013 – VS. TAKAPUNA (TOP 4 PLAY OFF) RESULT: 0 V 1 LOSS A frustrating result at the end of a frustrating week. Firstly the team seemed to plagued by injuries with four regular team starters being ruled out through injuries, the worst being Fiona Pierce who had the misfortune of breaking her foot/ ankle in two places and doing all her ligaments at the same time, whilst at training Wednesday night, injuries that obviously spell the end of her season (best of luck in your recovery Fiona). The frustration compiled once the game started, firstly with the Takapuna goal which sailed straight into the back of the net unimpeded from a free kick three minutes into the game, and then Birkenhead’s complete dominance throughout three quarters of the park until we hit the Takapuna eighteen yard box, where we either seemed to run out of ideas to proceed forward, or made a fairly ineffective shot towards the Takapuna goal. Thanks to Phoebe Van Der Plas who stepped up from 4th division this week and was one of the stand out players, and a player of the day performance from Sarah Taylor, (who sat on a bus for eleven hours from her studies in Wellington to make the game), and then provided a huge amount of work through the centre of the field.

LADIES DIVISION 2 4TH AUGUST – 4-0 LOSS VS. GLEN EDEN SF CUP This week we had to travel out to Parrs Park to play Glen Eden in the cup semi final. We started the game slowly and were put under a tonne of pressure early on although there were opportunities for us to catch them on the break but unfortunately we couldn’t quite

14 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz break through. By half time we had barely threatened them and conceded 2 own goals and the teams morale was understandably down. The second half was a much improved performance and in the last half hour we looked the better team and spent most of the time in their half but still struggled to take our chances when they were presented to us. Unfortunately it was their turn to hit us on the break late on which they did effectively and came out worthy, if a little flattered, winners in the end. Player of the day went to Karla Mason for a brilliant performance in three different positions throughout the game. 11TH AUGUST – 3-0 WIN VS. HIBISCUS COAST Today we travelled to the old foe Hibiscus coast. Knowing that they have been having an uncharacteristically bad year we knew this would be a good opportunity to put the disappointment of last week behind us and get a good win against a usually strong team. What followed was possibly the best performance that the team has had all year. Being on a large pitch the girls were told to keep possession and make good use of the ball which they did fantastically. Our passing game was impeccable and we managed to spread the ball all over the pitch to create multiple chances inside the first 15 minutes. From our defensive line to our wingers and strikers everyone was pitching in and causing them all types of concerns. This prompted Hibiscus to put 8 men behind the ball and it was a joy to watch as we still created chances and although we had some bad luck with two off the post and one off the line we did net three which were all scored by our striker and player of the day Patrice Koks which brings her tally up to 27 for the season with two games to go.

LADIES DIVISION 4A 4TH AUGUST 2013 – VS. BREAM BAY RESULT: 2 V 3 LOSS Two weeks ago we played Bream Bay in a cup match. We had no idea what to expect as this was a team from Whangärei who we have not played before. This turned out to be one of our most frustrating games. We were leading 2-0 early in the game, but by the end of the first half Bream Bay managed to equalise with a penalty from a hand-ball. The opposition managed to break the into the lead despite Birkenhead dominating game, however we did not look like we going to score with most of our attempts being either off target or straight toward the keeper. 11TH AUGUST 2013 – VS. ORATIA 0 V 3 LOSS Last week we played Oratia and lost 3-0. With a bare 11 and a large pitch straight away we were on the back foot which showed in the 3-0 score at half time. The second half was a much better performance defensively however we never really looked dangerous in the final third, the score remained unchanged. www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 15 16 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz WHEN YOU FEEL STUPID, READ THIS!

20 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz UNDER 17 METRO TOUGH GAME PRODUCES POSITIVE RESULT Game 14 vs Ellerslie, Sunday 28 July, Michaels Ave: At this stage of the competition we were 3rd on the ladder and with only 5 points behind log leaders, Ellerslie and it was a must to leave the park with a win. Also, if Ellerslie won this game they would leave with the title as the best u17 football team in the Metropolitan region… and Birkenhead was NOT going to let that happen were we??? Playing football on a huge, wide field suited our speedy attacking wingers as the instruction (from the coach) was to get wide, play wide and play the long ball. This, of course, was an effective strategy as we completely dictated play in the first half…nervous times. Adyn Kettle soon settled our nerves when from midfield he played the ball to an approaching Joel who then passed the ball to a well positioned Conor who held the ball up before laying it off to an advancing Adyn who unleashed a direct powerful strike to complete a stunning play which he started. Goalie had no chance of saving that one… 1-0 up…..brilliant. Continue with the same strategy was the half-time instruction. But, as expected, Ellerslie started the second half with more determination and passion. It was now our defenders turn to shine and shine they did. Led by the ever consistent Scott Guyatt & Jared Dixon, the opposition attacking force, which included an u17 national player, had no answer and soon became frustrated. And believe you me they pelted our goal for most of the second half. Our keeper, Darius Shizel, was outstanding as he made numerous saves… too many to count in fact. Conclusion: We held on and left the park with a win, which once again proved our tenacity and will to win this elusive title. Stand outs: Adyn Kettle, Scott Guyatt, Jared Dixon, Darius Shizell Result: 1-0 win Coaching Team’s Emotion: Awesome  Outlook: Nearly there Coach: Paul Hobson Trainers: Steve Holbutt & Terry Taylor Manager: Jason Higgins

DISAPPOINTING DRAW DAMAGE DREAM Game 15 vs Central, Sunday 04 August, Shepherds Park: This game was vital as a win would elevate us up the ladder and threaten the long time log www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 21 UNDER 17 METRO continued leaders Ellerslie. And since Bucklands Beach beat Ellerslie the morning before our game, we were in high spirits realising the dream of becoming u17 Metro Champions!!! The dream nearly became a nightmare when we soon found ourselves 2-0 down 25 minutes into the first half. An unlucky slip by our centre back allowed their centre forward to run on and beat our keeper. Minutes later a “Hollywood” fall inside the box resulted in a penalty which was well executed. aaarrrggghhhhh!!! - Me, fuming at this stage. A half-time chat focusing on self-belief and a reminder that the last time we played Central we were in the same boat and produced a stunning comeback win, must’ve sparked a fuse. We started the second half with gusto and it looked like the boys were enjoying just playing football. Complete domination for most of the second half resulted in plays, which produced stunning strikes by both Harrison Bolton-Roberts and Joel Curran. The ball swerved and dipped before hitting the back of the net on both occasions…. 2-2 and another comeback win were on the cards. Conclusion: Unfortunately Central held on and even though the boys played awesome football we were unlucky. Standouts: Harrison Bolton-Roberts, Jack Benbow, Joel Curran, Amili Kasim Result: 2-2 draw Coaching Team’s Emotion: Unsettled  Outlook: Hopeful Coach: Paul Hobson Trainers: Steve Holbutt & Terry Taylor Manager: Jason Higgins

ABSOLUTE DELIGHT AFTER WHIPPING WAITAKERE AT HOME Game 16 vs Waitakere, Sunday 11 August, Fred Taylor Park: With end of the season looming, we are well placed to possibly win the league. I say possible, as all we need is for Ellerslie to either lose or draw their final game against a competitive Central United this weekend….. and we MUST win every game from here on… possible??? Yes, definitely possible!!! So, a good win against a determined Waitakere side would not only lift our spirits again but also motivate us to completely annihilate our old foe, Forrest Hill, in the last 2 remaining games of the season. We were scheduled to play on Fred Taylor #1 pitch. Another huge, wide pitch and yes, the old tactic of getting &playing wide was the order of the day. Again, our speedy wingers, Dylan

22 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz Higgins & Thomson Nkoy dominated the wide option and completely showed up Waitakere’s backs. Our 1st goal scored by Conor Felstead, was as a result of an attacking play spurred on by a quick swift run down the right wing by Dylan who crossed a low ball for an easy tap in goal…. Classic, 1-0 up at half time. As expected Waitakere started the second SEASON GOALS half more determined and their very Conor Felstead 14 aggressive tackles bordered illegal play. Thomson Nkoy 6 But our boys would not let our opposition Adyn Kettle 4 dominate as they did in the 1st round. Joel Curran 4 Strong midfield hustling completely left Dylan Higgins 3 Waitakere “ball-less”… in other words Harrison Bolton-Roberts 3 “without ball possession” to be tactful. John Short 3 But Waitakere did manage to score against Amili Kasim 2 the run of play. Strangely enough it also Elijah Neblett 2 came courtesy of a rightwing run and then Cody Doherty 3 cross-in for an easy tap in goal. Unluckily, Thomson’s shot on goal seconds after the Keegan Farrelly 1 re-start was saved by the keeper. Scott Guyatt 1 However moments later he had another Tate Kimpton 1 opportunity to score which he did with style. TOTAL 45 A well-positioned Thomson somehow found himself with the ball near the goal line and calmly slotted our 2nd. Our third goal was secured when a cross-in came from the right… I think it was from a corner.... confusion in the box and before you know it, Cody Doherty blasted the ball less than 1m from the goal line… easy as!!! Conclusion: Strong performances from our wingers, Dylan Higgins, Thomson Nkoy & Harry Bell together with solid midfield dominance by Joel Curran, Cody Doherty & Jack Benbow allowed us to play our usual attacking football which left Waitakere flabbergasted. Standouts: Joel Curran, Dylan Higgins, Thomson Nkoy Result: 3-1 win Coaching Team’s Emotion: Overjoyed  Outlook: Take that to the bank Coach: Paul Hobson Trainers: Steve Holbutt & Terry Taylor Manager: Jason Higgins

www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 23 24 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz FUN FOOTBALL 2013 8TH GRADE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT As the Birkenhead United First Team battles to win the premiership, the future of Birkenhead football headed down to Keith Hay Park to play in the annual 8th Grade Three Kings tournament. We were lucky to have Paul Hobson to take the team for the day and the young players were very excited. Our first game was against the tough and talented East Coast Bays team. The boys were nervous and it showed in the first few minutes. A great goal soon settled the nerves. The team then started to string the passes together and another goal followed. At the full-time whistle Birkenhead won 3-0. Our second game was against Eastern Suburbs. The team started well but for some reason could not find the net and then Eastern Suburbs got a breakaway goal. Our goalie tried to stop the shot but against the play they take the lead. At half time we got the famous Paul speech and the team headed out. What a second half, we hit the post and with minutes to go we put one in the back of the net. The whistle goes and it ends as a one all draw. Our third game was against Fencibles and the team began to find form. After a tough few minutes we put one in the back of the net and then another. As the boys begin to put the passes together the gaps begin to appear and we put another one in the net. The whistle

We wait for the next round and find out that we are in the championship play-off. For the pool games we finished third out of fourteen teams on the day. For the championship semi–final we are playing the home team, Three Kings. The game starts and what a battle, chances at both ends but from our corner, it bounces off a Three Kings player and we get the goal. At half time we are up 1-0, the supporters continued to cheer and then we get another one 2-0 up with three quarters of the game gone. Three Kings put the pressure on and get one back. Oh no, Three Kings get another one back and suddenly it is 2 all. The boys begin to feel the pressure and then the referee awards Three Kings a free kick. The Three Kings young striker hits a great strike and the ball flies in the net. The whistle goes and Three Kings win 3-2. As the old saying goes, that is football. The team heads home to train hard for the next tournament which is being hosted by Birkenhead United, 18th August 2013. Well done to the team of Braden, Jackson, Vojin, Logan, Dominic, Jasper, Luka, Jack, Aaron, James T and James M. Thanks to Paul and all the supporters for heading down for this Three Kings 8th Grade Tournament. Philip Harkness

9TH GRADE BLAZERS AT THREE KINGS TOURNAMENT. On Sunday 2nd August the Birkenhead Blazers 9th grade team went to their third tournament of the season. Earlier efforts had produced some good pool play but suffered losses in the first round of knockout. At the “Digger Douglas” tournament they were trailing 4-1 and produced an amazing comeback to draw 5-5 only to lose on corner count back 3-2. Three Kings tournament did not have pools but a random draw which saw the Blazers play Fencibles, Three Kings & Eastern Suburbs - 3 formidable teams. Fencibles were more physical than boys were used to and scored a good goal early. Birkenhead recovered to contest strongly and almost drew level with a shot bouncing off the far post late in the first half. The game was fairly even throughout second half up until a ball over top was well finished and Fencibles won 2-0. Three Kings had won their first game 5-0 and I was a little worried so I told the team the

26 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz opposite, TKU had lost 5-0. Birkenhead had learnt from the first game and came out strongly, dominating territory and possession, scored an early goal and held their nerve to win1-0. Awesome result. Eastern Suburbs were another talented team and comfortably won game three, 2-0. Our results placed us in the plate round. In the semifinal the game was very even with both teams having chances but not finishing. Everton O’Leary in goal had made some great saves all day and when it was 0-0 at full time and then 0-0 after extra time he was about to face his first penalty shoot out. Birkenhead went second and it was exhilarating stuff as Everton saved three shots and Birkenhead scored 3 for a 3-0 result and off to the final against Bay Olympic. The game was back and forth for the first 8mins until Bay Olympic picked up the pace and scored 3 quick goals just before half time. Birkenhead never quite got to their best but fought hard right to the final whistle and came off the field exhausted to a big round of applause from all the parents. Well done Alec, Ben, Brandon, Everton, Henry, Joseph, Louis, Quinn & Thomas - awesome effort. Patrick Le Comte - Coach Proud to Support the Birkenhead Community
