GRILLED CHEESE DAY

Grilled Cheese Day is on April 12, 2018. Jay and Victor like the plain Grilled Cheese. Mary Jane like to use American cheese for her grilled cheese. Kathy said that her family uses Cheddar cheese in their Grilled cheese sandwiches. Comfort Meal Enjoyed today by people around the world as an after school or Picture by Jon R. as a comfort meal, the modern version of a grilled cheese is believed to have originated in the United States during the 1920s when sliced bread and cheese became easily available. The cheese usually used in grilled cheese is American cheese which is a processed cheese product that has a very low melting point. Hot tomato soup, potato chips, and pickles are common accompaniments of a grilled cheese sandwich. How to Celebrate? Make grilled cheese for all your meals. Have an egg and bacon grilled cheese for breakfast, a tomato and mozzarella grilled cheese for lunch, and a traditional grilled cheese for dinner. Who says grilled cheese has to be savory? Make a dessert grilled cheese with fruit and brie or cream cheese and chocolate spread. Gourmet up your grilled cheese by adding gourmet ingredients to it. What about adding some bacon into the mix or some arugula and roasted beets for the vegetarians? Substitute tomato soup with sweet potato soup or pumpkin soup.

In Arts and Crafts they make a Aluminum foil jewelry. The participants choose what they like to make necklaces or earrings. Directions: To make beads 1. Cut the aluminum foil into small piece, take aluminum foil and crush it for the texture. 2. We were maintaining the round shape as we were rolling the foil. 3. When we reached the required size, just cut the foil. If the bead seems to be little loose, keep rolling on the table till it is a hard ball. 4. To poke the hole, I thought it can be done using a toothpick. But the toothpick is not sharp enough! We used the pushpin. After the hole was made, we used toothpick to make the hole a little bigger. Silver bead from Aluminum foil is done! 5. String both paper long bead and round foil beads. You can combine with colorful beads. To make the earring: Cut out the shapes you desired out of thin cardboard sheet i have used the thin cardboard which comes in shirt package and pierce a hole in the cut shapes to add the hooks take aluminium foil and crush it for the texture, apply glue to the cuts and add foil on both the sides. Add the jump rings and hooks to them and earrings are ready.

Jon R. - I like a buzz.

Jon W.- The Mohawk, like Mr. T.. I appreciate it but I never wanted to wear one. I don’t have the guts. Once I saw a guy with his hair sculpted like a moose.

Benessia – I like a poofy ponytail.

Darla – I like short hair, so I can wash it easily. The longest I ever had my hair was down to my shoulders. That didn’t go too good. It was too hard to wash.

Destiny – I like to put my hair up in a messy bun. I think a top knot is strange. It is when you have part of your hair up in a bun and part of it down in the back.

Joey – I like slick hair. It is really nice looking. Jack Dawson in Titanic, had his hair slicked back. At one time, my hair was down to my shoulders. And once I saw a picture of a girl with her hair made into helicopter blades.

Brittany – I like getting my hair French braided. National Siblings Day

Picture by staff Picture by Wilfredo R.

Honor your sibling on Siblings on April 10th. National Siblings Day is an opportunity to celebrate the very significant and often under-appreciated relationship between brothers and sisters. Those blessed with siblings know that at times they can be annoying to be around. Don’t let that keep you from celebrating what could probably be the longest relationship in your life. This unofficial day was started by Claudia Evart in memory of her brother and sister, whom she lost early in her life. Jon W. – I have three siblings and three in-laws. There was never a dull moment around our house when we were growing up. They were constantly around the house. Sometimes they were annoying. Sometimes they were fun. But there was never a dull moment. Darla –I have a brother and a sister. I am looking forward to going to Dutch Apple Dinner Theater with my sister to see the Wizard of Oz and have lunch there. Jamie – I have two siblings. One is in St. Joseph’s Cemetary. He was an older brother who only lived for an hour. I also have an older sister, who I live with. One Christmas, when we were very young, my sister and I got up early and went downstairs. When we heard my parents coming, we quickly ran back up and got in bed. My sister would agitate me and I would scream. I would get in trouble with my parents. One day they heard her agitating me, and finally understood why I screamed. Joey – I have two sisters. The oldest sister is Jennifer, who has been married for 16 years. She has two children, Kayla and Kyle. I actually cried at her wedding. It was so beautiful. A friend saw me and told my mom. Then my Mom started crying, too.. Jon R. – I have two brothers, and one sister. I remember going to church together when we were younger. April Fools' Day

April Fool’s Day is celebrated every April 1st, by playing practical jokes on family and friends. When the prank is discovered, the instigator shouts ’April Fools!’. Sometimes the news media report fake stories, which are usually corrected the next day or below the news section in small letters. Although April Fool’s Day has been popular since the 19th century, it is not a public holiday in any country.

Here, at Adult Enrichment, Amparo is known for her April Fool’s pranks. So we decided to interview her.

Q. What was April Fool’s like when you were a kid? Amparo: We don’t celebrate April Fool’s Day in Colombia, but we have something similar on December 28th, El Biente Ocho. Children would go from house to house and we would put fake poop on the door step, or chewing gum on the door bell. Then we would ring the bell and run away. Sometimes people put salt in someone’s coffee. One Saturday morning when I was a child, my Mom said, ‘Wake up, you are late for school!’ I quickly took a shower. Then she said, ‘Go back to bed, it is Saturday.

Q. Where do you come up with your ideas for April Fool’s pranks? Amparo: I find ideas online and add my own ideas to make them better. My favorite one was one time I took the cardboard from a toilet paper. I got it wet, rung it out and shaped it. Then I put a small piece of it on the toilet seat, and the rest of it on the floor in the AE bathroom. Alisha came early in the morning and found it. She said ‘Oh my god’. ‘What?’ I asked, as I came to look. ‘Oh, that is disgusting!’ I said. I offered to clean it up. Alisha said, ‘No, I will. She rolled up her pants and put on gloves. When she picked it up I said, ‘April Fool’s!’ Other favorite pranks are, putting Vaseline on door, cabinet and microwave handles. Or I’ll walk up behind someone and sneeze and spray them with a water bottle at the same time.

In order to balance out the perspective of April Fool’s pranks, we interviewed Tania. Q. What is it like being the victim of other people’s April Fools pranks? Tania: I went into the Staff Bathroom early in the morning. I saw something like a #2 in the toilet. And I looked at it, and I knew Amparo was the only one here. I thought, ‘Ewwwwww, she is nasty.’ Then I flushed it. Later, Alisha came and said, ‘Did you find something in the bathroom?’ ‘I said, ‘Yeah, it was nasty.’ Alisha said, ‘Amparo did an April Fool’s joke on you. What do you think?’ ‘She is nasty!’, I said. That was two years ago, and I am still traumatized by it. Amparo loves to put Vaseline on the cabinet handles, microwave handles and the Staff Bathroom doorknob. When I touched my cabinet, I said ‘Yuck!!’ Amparo is the April Fool’s Queen. Picture by June

One of April’s Flowers of the month is the Sweet Pea. It is a climbing vine a fragrant flower and can be traced back to 17th century Italy. It brought to England and cultivated for its sweet aroma. These flowers became popular in late Victorian gardens and were included in gift bouquets sent to show gratitude. They are a symbol of Edwardian England and were an important part of floral arrangements for wedding and dinner parties during that period. Additional meanings of the sweet pea are delicate pleasure, blissful pleasure and good-bye. The sweet pea is still used in flower arrangements and wedding bouquets. It has a soft, paper-like texture. Its colors range from purples, pinks and creams to salmon as well as two-toned varieties. It has a sweet fruity fragrance. But, do not eat the seeds of the sweet pea. They are poisonous. Plant the Sweet pea in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. They produce many blossoms and are good to use in cut flower arrangements. The Farmer’s Almanac recommends gathering the flowers in the morning when the dew is still on them, and their scent is the sweetest. They can also be dried and their petals used to make potpourri. EASTER

Easter is always on a Sunday said by Jon .W. Mary Jane stated the flower Lily is the Easter flower. Victor stated that on Easter people go to Church. Joey stated that Jesus arose from the Dead. For Dinner some people have ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, string beans, pumpkin pie. Jon W. said lots of pounds gained. On Picture by Stephanie Easter some people have Easter egg Hunts in their back yard. When is Easter 2018 and how is the date decided? This year's Easter takes place from Good Friday on March 30 until Easter Monday on April 2 - making Easter Sunday on April 1, which is also April Fool's day. The death of Jesus occurred around the Jewish Passover, which is traditionally held on first full moon following the vernal equinox. As the full moon can vary in each time zone, the Church said that they would use the 14th day of the lunar month instead – the Paschal Full Moon – and host Easter Day on the following Sunday.

Our March outing we wanted to do something adventurous. We decided that going to That Fish Place would be perfect!!! Sam was able to pet a Stingray and we walked around and spotted different marine life and the little critters that sleep there too. After, we enjoyed walking next door to have lunch at Isaac’s. There they name their sandwiches after different birds. How funny is that. If you have never been I can say at least try it. WORLD PARTY DAY

World Party Day is on April 12, 2018 The idea behind the holiday is that the opposite of war and suffering should not be to passively observe peace. Instead, people must actively participate in the celebration of life. First in 1996. The holiday is inspired by the ending of the 1995 novel, Flight: A Quantum. Fiction Novel, by Vanna Bonta, where a countdown is set to April 3, 2000 when a worldwide synchronized celebration occurs. The first Party Day was held around the Picture by Staff world in 1996. How to Celebrate? Research suggests that meeting new people from different cultures helps cultivate intercultural understanding and harmony. So why not throw a party for your family and friends and ask them to bring their friends and coworkers along? Organize a block party. Peace begins at home and by being neighborly. Spend time with your neighbors and celebrate your neighborhood. What about partying for a cause? Host a party and have your guests contribute to a cause close to your and your heart. Whatever you do and whoever you party with, remember that you need no excuse to celebrate life and to be good to others.

National Kite Month

April is the month to celebrate kite flying. As the last of the snow gives way to green lawns, it draws us outside and invites us to be active. So why not try your hand at kite flying this year? Bring your kite out of the closet. Dust it off and prepare it for a summer on the beach. Or choose a kite from the many different designs and colors Picture by Kathy S. available these days. Make your own, or buy one. Then, pick a windy day, find an open field, and go for it….Go Fly A Kite! Experience the joy and happiness that comes from letting out the line, catching the wind, and seeing the kite soar high into the sky. Picture by Aaron
