“Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way. -

Public Health Management at Outdoor Music Festivals"
PUBLIC HEALTH MANAGEMENT AT OUTDOOR MUSIC FESTIVALS CAMERON EARL Ass Dip Health Surveying; Masters in Community and Environmental Health Graduate Certificate in Health Science Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Health Science, School of Public Health Faculty of Health Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane January 2006 2 Thesis Abstract Background Information: Outdoor music festivals (OMFs) are complex events to organise with many exceeding the population of a small city. Minimising public health impacts at these events is important with improved event planning and management seen as the best method to achieve this. Key players in improving public health outcomes include the environmental health practitioners (EHPs) working within local government authorities (LGAs) that regulate OMFs and volunteer organisations with an investment in volunteer staff working at events. In order to have a positive impact there is a need for more evidence and to date there has been limited research undertaken in this area. The research aim: The aim of this research program was to enhance event planning and management at OMFs and add to the body of knowledge on volunteers, crowd safety and quality event planning for OMFs. This aim was formulated by the following objectives. 1. To investigate the capacity of volunteers working at OMFs to successfully contribute to public health and emergency management; 2. To identify the key factors that can be used to improve public health management at OMFs; and 3. To identify priority concerns and influential factors that are most likely to have an impact on crowd behaviour and safety for patrons attending OMFs. -
May 18, 2016 for Immediate Release WATCH MODERAT's “RUNNING
May 18, 2016 For Immediate Release WATCH MODERAT’S “RUNNING” VIDEO https://youtu.be/tVawpT44Hrk MODERAT KICK OFF NORTH AMERICAN TOUR THIS FRIDAY MODERAT’S III OUT NOW VIA MUTE/MONKEYTOWN ModerAt, the alliance of electronic heavy weights, Modeselektor and AppArAt, kick off their North American tour in support of new album, III, this Friday in New York. They’ll be joined throughout by longtime creative collaborators, PfadfiNderei, who will take the reins on visual production. Last week, Moderat announced the release of the album’s second single, “RuNNiNg,” which presents a highly emotive kind of pop, built for dancing, but never simple. Today, the trio reveals the single’s visual accompaniment, directed by JAkob GruNert. Grunert uses the incessant momentum of “Running” to narrate a pilot’s final flight in the Mojave Desert. After abandoning his plane in an aircraft boneyard, the pilot grapples with the frailty of purpose and the pursuit of rebirth. The story goes hand-in-hand with Apparat’s description of “Running” in that the song is about being part of a mass that constantly needs to move to function, but a mass that’s not deciding directions by itself. Mute/MoNkeytown will release “Running,” featuring the exclusive b-side, “90% WAsser,” on May 20th. The digital bundle includes remixes by Shed and KiNK. The “RuNNiNg” 10”, available July 1st, will feature both remixes, and the “RuNNiNg” 12”, available July 15th, will feature the original track and exclusive b-side. Some Albums to Keep Your Toes Warm This October Pt 2
Some Albums To Keep Your Toes Warm This October Pt 2. Bittles‘ Magazine | Record Review I was arm-wrestling a tiger the other day (my editor told me I had to make the beginning of my articles more exciting) when I suddenly realised that I had no time for such frivolity as I had some great albums to review. Quickly admitting defeat, I retreated to my listening studio (bedroom) and immersed myself in some of the fantastic records that will be hitting the record store shelves this October. By JOHN BITTLES We have the UK house of Huxley, the indie bleakness of Grouper, the disco diva-isms of Munk, the techno bass of Distal and so much more. But really, in a month when there is, finally, a new album by Glaswegian duo Slam, there is only one place we can begin. Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle have long been established as bona fide legends of the house and techno scene! Their record label Soma is over 400 releases old, their DJ sets at clubs like The Sub Club and The Arches in Glasgow are discussed with an air of awed reverence, and, as Slam, the duo have released some of the finest electronic music known to man. And now, in the year 2014 they give us their first album in seven years with the deep and moody brilliance of Reverse Proceed. The cinematic ambience of Tokyo Subway, Visual Capture and the title track open proceedings and are the perfect introduction to the deliciously deep sounds to come. In fact it’s not until the techno futurism of Synchronicity that we even get our very first sign of a beat. -

TURNTABLISM AND AUDIO ART STUDY 2009 May 2009 Radio Policy Broadcasting Directorate CRTC Catalogue No. BC92-71/2009E-PDF ISBN # 978-1-100-13186-3 Contents SUMMARY 1 HISTORY 1.1-Defintion: Turntablism 1.2-A Brief History of DJ Mixing 1.3-Evolution to Turntablism 1.4-Definition: Audio Art 1.5-Continuum: Overlapping definitions for DJs, Turntablists, and Audio Artists 1.6-Popularity of Turntablism and Audio Art 2 BACKGROUND: Campus Radio Policy Reviews, 1999-2000 3 SURVEY 2008 3.1-Method 3.2-Results: Patterns/Trends 3.3-Examples: Pre-recorded music 3.4-Examples: Live performance 4 SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM 4.1-Difficulty with using MAPL System to determine Canadian status 4.2- Canadian Content Regulations and turntablism/audio art CONCLUSION SUMMARY Turntablism and audio art are becoming more common forms of expression on community and campus stations. Turntablism refers to the use of turntables as musical instruments, essentially to alter and manipulate the sound of recorded music. Audio art refers to the arrangement of excerpts of musical selections, fragments of recorded speech, and ‘found sounds’ in unusual and original ways. The following paper outlines past and current difficulties in regulating these newer genres of music. It reports on an examination of programs from 22 community and campus stations across Canada. Given the abstract, experimental, and diverse nature of these programs, it may be difficult to incorporate them into the CRTC’s current music categories and the current MAPL system for Canadian Content. Nonetheless, turntablism and audio art reflect the diversity of Canada’s artistic community. -

Fondazione Prada Presents the Musical Program “I Want to Like You but I Find It Difficult” at Its Milan Venue on 8 June and 28 September 2018
FONDAZIONE PRADA PRESENTS THE MUSICAL PROGRAM “I WANT TO LIKE YOU BUT I FIND IT DIFFICULT” AT ITS MILAN VENUE ON 8 JUNE AND 28 SEPTEMBER 2018 Milan, 22 May 2018 - Fondazione Prada presents the musical program “I WANT TO LIKE YOU BUT I FIND IT DIFFICULT”, curated by Craig Richards, at its Milan venue on Friday 8 June and on Friday 28 September 2018, from 7pm to midnight. Conceived as a three-part series, the project was initiated on 19 April 2018 with a special event featuring Ricardo Villalobos and Richards. With this new program, Fondazione Prada expands its activities incorporating musical experimentations into its cultural offer, creating unexpected resonances between disciplines. “I WANT TO LIKE YOU BUT I FIND IT DIFFICULT” is an attempt to explore a wide range of genres and languages, from electronic music to Ethio-jazz, from minimal to Afrobeat, hosting international performers, such as Mulatu Astatke, E/Tape, Burnt Friedman, Nicolas Lutz, Monolake Live Surround, Joy Orbison, Craig Richards, Midori Takada and Baby Vulture. Starting from a personal perspective, developed by acclaimed British artist Craig Richards, the constellation of acts included in the two line-ups aims to engage a plurality of audiences with Fondazione Prada’s mission, proving that culture can be as entertaining and attractive as it is useful and necessary. The program, open to contaminations and proposing unpredictable dialogues among established and emerging artists, has been conceived as a challenging cultural experience in which music is presented as a manifestation of creative freedom both for performers and the public alike. As stated by Craig Richards, “the concept of my curation revolves around the notion that music when juxtaposed can be challenging, confrontational and even awkward. -
