    The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge.     PUBLIC HEALTH MANAGEMENT AT OUTDOOR MUSIC FESTIVALS CAMERON EARL Ass Dip Health Surveying; Masters in Community and Environmental Health Graduate Certificate in Health Science Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Health Science, School of Public Health Faculty of Health Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane January 2006 2 Thesis Abstract Background Information: Outdoor music festivals (OMFs) are complex events to organise with many exceeding the population of a small city. Minimising public health impacts at these events is important with improved event planning and management seen as the best method to achieve this. Key players in improving public health outcomes include the environmental health practitioners (EHPs) working within local government authorities (LGAs) that regulate OMFs and volunteer organisations with an investment in volunteer staff working at events. In order to have a positive impact there is a need for more evidence and to date there has been limited research undertaken in this area. The research aim: The aim of this research program was to enhance event planning and management at OMFs and add to the body of knowledge on volunteers, crowd safety and quality event planning for OMFs. This aim was formulated by the following objectives. 1. To investigate the capacity of volunteers working at OMFs to successfully contribute to public health and emergency management; 2. To identify the key factors that can be used to improve public health management at OMFs; and 3. To identify priority concerns and influential factors that are most likely to have an impact on crowd behaviour and safety for patrons attending OMFs.

Turntablism refers to the use of turntables as musical instruments, essentially to alter and manipulate the sound of recorded music. Audio art refers to the arrangement of excerpts of musical selections, fragments of recorded speech, and ‘found sounds’ in unusual and original ways. The following paper outlines past and current difficulties in regulating these newer genres of music. It reports on an examination of programs from 22 community and campus stations across Canada. Given the abstract, experimental, and diverse nature of these programs, it may be difficult to incorporate them into the CRTC’s current music categories and the current MAPL system for Canadian Content. Nonetheless, turntablism and audio art reflect the diversity of Canada’s artistic community.

Reed ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Since I joined the American Studies Graduate Program, there has been a host of faculty that has really helped me to learn what it takes to be in this field. The one professor that has really guided my development has been Dr. John Streamas. By connecting me to different resources and his challenging the confines of higher education so that it can improve, he has been an inspiration to finish this work. It is also important that I mention the help that other faculty members have given me. I appreciate the assistance I received anytime that I needed it from Dr. T.V. Reed and Dr. Rory Ong. A person that has kept me on point with deadlines and requirements has been Jean Wiegand with the American Studies Department.     FONDAZIONE PRADA PRESENTS THE MUSICAL PROGRAM “I WANT TO LIKE YOU BUT I FIND IT DIFFICULT” AT ITS MILAN VENUE ON 8 JUNE AND 28 SEPTEMBER 2018 Milan, 22 May 2018 - Fondazione Prada presents the musical program “I WANT TO LIKE YOU BUT I FIND IT DIFFICULT”, curated by Craig Richards, at its Milan venue on Friday 8 June and on Friday 28 September 2018, from 7pm to midnight. Conceived as a three-part series, the project was initiated on 19 April 2018 with a special event featuring Ricardo Villalobos and Richards. With this new program, Fondazione Prada expands its activities incorporating musical experimentations into its cultural offer, creating unexpected resonances between disciplines. “I WANT TO LIKE YOU BUT I FIND IT DIFFICULT” is an attempt to explore a wide range of genres and languages, from electronic music to Ethio-jazz, from minimal to Afrobeat, hosting international performers, such as Mulatu Astatke, E/Tape, Burnt Friedman, Nicolas Lutz, Monolake Live Surround, Joy Orbison, Craig Richards, Midori Takada and Baby Vulture. Starting from a personal perspective, developed by acclaimed British artist Craig Richards, the constellation of acts included in the two line-ups aims to engage a plurality of audiences with Fondazione Prada’s mission, proving that culture can be as entertaining and attractive as it is useful and necessary. The program, open to contaminations and proposing unpredictable dialogues among established and emerging artists, has been conceived as a challenging cultural experience in which music is presented as a manifestation of creative freedom both for performers and the public alike. As stated by Craig Richards, “the concept of my curation revolves around the notion that music when juxtaposed can be challenging, confrontational and even awkward.
