Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history.

FRANK STEELE, editor of the Lethbridge Herald, has rounded up some of his verses which have appeared in his column, "Lights and Shad- ows," and has issued them in the form of a small, paper-bound brochure, a copy of which he has sent in to the office of The Improve- ment Era. .We commend Mr. Steele's activity in the field of verse. Many people might well follow his example. WHEN THE ABOVE NOTICE APPEARED in the Improvement Era in Septem- ber 1933, it did not seem out of place in a publication intended for the general church membership. In the same issue of the Improvement Era, Theodore E. Curtis posted a notice for another collection of poetry.     The Online Journal of George Q. Cannon Richard Dilworth Rust long-anticipated project is coming to completion. Much of the A journal of George Q. Cannon, covering the last half of the nine- teenth century, is now freely available online at www.church his tori ans press .org/george-q-cannon/, and the remainder of the journal will soon be available. As with other Church Historian’s Press publications, metic- ulous attention has been paid to produce an accurate and reliable tran- script.1 It has been prepared largely according to the editorial procedures developed by the Joseph Smith Papers Project. Next to Brigham Young, George Q. Cannon was arguably the best- known Latter-day Saint in the last half of the nineteenth century. His remarkable journal, contained in fifty-one physical volumes, is one of the most insightful and detailed records in Mormon history. His record spans five decades, a period in which he served as an editor and pub- lisher, a businessman, an educator, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a territorial delegate in Congress, and a counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The vast majority of Cannon’s journal has never been publicly available before.2 The online publication of Cannon’s journal includes 1.     The Church Library Coordinating Committee and the Correlation of Meetinghouse Libraries Cory Nimer eginning in the late 1950s, many religious groups in the United BStates saw a growing interest in the development and improvement of libraries. Within some denominations, organizations were created to advocate library programs and promulgate standards and guidelines. This effort included the establishment of the Parish Library Section of the Catholic Library Association in 1957 and the formation of the Lutheran Church Library Association the following year.1 A drive toward greater cooperation and professionalization culminated in 1967 with the cre- ation of the Church and Synagogue Library Association, a nonprofit, nondenominational organization that provided conferences and publi- cations for training church librarians.2 As part of this national effort to improve church libraries, a range of manuals and support materials were published to guide local church pro- grams. Many of these followed the structure established by the Southern Baptist Convention in their 1937 publication The Church Library Man- ual. Arrington November 7,1995 Sponsored by Special Collections & Archives Merrill Library Utah State University Logan, Utah Introduction Throughout its history the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, through its leaders and apologists, has declared that faith and intellect have a mutually supportive relationship.1 Faith opens the way to knowledge, and knowledge, in turn, often reaches up to reverence. Spiritual understanding comes with faith and is supported by intellect. Church President Spencer W. Kimball told Brigham Young University students in his “Second Century Address” in 1976: “As LDS scholars you must speak with authority and excellence to your professional colleagues in the language of scholarship, and you must also be literate in the language of spiritual things.”2 The theme of faith and intellect, not faith versus intellect, was established in the early days of the Restoration.
