Prof. Dr. Birten ÇELİK February 2021, 309 pages This study examines the integration of artisans and traders into the new administrative structure in Istanbul through municipalities between 1839-1922, as well as the abolition of their guilds during this integration process. The study suggests that the underlying reasons in changing of the conditions of these groups and the abolition of the guilds cannot be explained only with the dynamics of economy, such as the integration of the Ottoman market into the European capitalist economic system, mechanization in production, and free-trade practices, but they were also related to the changing administrative necessities. The new administrative system, legislation, marketplace supervision, and the change in the professional organization model impacted the transformation of these groups. Furthermore, this study argues that the abolition of the guild wardenship was not only the result of their economic loss of power, but it was also the outcome of the administrative modernization in the Ottoman Empire. The conflicts emerged in the guilds upon the guild’s warden position and its responsibilities played crucial roles in the abolition of the guilds. The study is set on two essential questions: The first one is that how the artisans and traders of Istanbul adapted themselves to the administrative restructuring in the nineteenth century, and iv the second one is that what kind of an organizational transformation took place from guilds to esnaf associations. Keywords: Esnaf, Guilds, Associations, Municipality, Istanbul (19th & early 20th century). v ÖZ GEÇ DÖNEM OSMANLI İMPARATORLUĞU’NDA İSTANBUL ESNAFININ DÖNÜŞÜMÜ: 1839-1922 SÜT, Pınar Doktora, Tarih Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Doç. Çalışma iki temel soru üzerine kuruludur: Birincisi, İstanbul esnafı on dokuzuncu yüzyılda kendisini idari yeniden yapılandırmaya nasıl adapte etti? İkincisi, loncalardan esnaf cemiyetlerine doğru nasıl bir örgütsel dönüşüm yaşandı? vi Anahtar Kelimeler: Esnaf, Loncalar, Cemiyetler, Belediye, İstanbul (19. ve erken 20. Yüzyıllar). vii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am greatly indebted to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Birten Çelik for her academic contribution, criticism, encouragement, and patience all through the dissertation process. Box: 10, Beykoz, Istanbul, TURKEY 2 Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Bulent Ecevit University, Zonguldak, TURKEY 3 Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, 18 Mart University, Çanakkale, TURKEY *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract In this work phthalates pollution in red, brown and green algae in the Black Sea, Istanbul Starait and Çanakkale Strait were investigated. The detected phthalate derivatives were DEP, DIBP, DBP and DEHP. Very toxic phthalate DEHP was found only in the Istanbul Strait. Phthalates pollution of algae depends on the pollution of sea water. Keywords: Phthalates, red, brown, green algae, Turkish coast Introduction Phthalates are phthalic acid esters used since 1931. They increase flexibility and transparency of plastics, detergents, wax, paints, printings, textiles and also used in pharmacy as tablet coatings, emulsifying, suspending agents and cosmetics. They were used approximately six million tons every year. Phthalates are released into environment during various utilization and create high risk for human health. They cause breast/hepatic cancer, allergies, disrupt endocrine system. Various phthalate derivatives are shown in Table 1. Phthalates have been detected in seawater and marine organisms by various authors (Giam et al. 1978; Sullivan et al. 1982; Ernst 1983; Waldock 1983; Preston and Al˗Omran 1986; Tan 1995; Wahidulla and De Souza 1995), in fish (Stalling et al. 1973), in jellyfish in the atoll (Morris 1970), in shrimp (Laughlin et al.

Anita Judith Ogurlu 16 February 2016 2 Abstract This thesis examines the life and work of a little-known interwar period German writer Lilo Linke. Documenting individual and social evolution across three continents, her self-reflexive and autobiographical narratives are like conversations with readers in the hope of facilitating progressive change. With little tertiary education, as a self-fashioned practitioner prior to the emergence of cultural studies, Linke’s everyday experiences constitute ‘experiential learning’ (John Dewey). Rejecting her Nazi-leaning family, through ‘fortunate encounter[s]’ (Goethe) she became critical of Weimar and cultivated hope by imagining and working to become a better person, what Ernst Bloch called Vor-Schein. Linke’s ‘instinct of workmanship’, ‘parental bent’ and ‘idle curiosity’ was grounded in her inherent ‘spirit of insubordination’, terms borrowed from Thorstein Veblen.

As a natural beauty, it is possible to see pleasant streams of Kucuksu and Goksu, the opening of Bosphorus into the fascinating Black Sea, and the small yet lovely villages inside. It won’t be wrong to say that Beykoz is in the top 3 charming districts of Istanbul. In the past, Beykoz was used for hunting by Ottoman sultans, you can still see the remaining buildings such as fountains and mosques from that era. Bosphorus coastal on the Anatolian side starts from Beylerbeyi and goes up to Beykoz in the North. Residents can also use the ferries from central spots such as Eminonu, Besiktas, Yenikoy, Bebek, or Emirgan to the neighborhoods of the Anatolian side. The location has the most expensive mansion on the coastal line. The mansions are still photographed by the tourists from the ferries. While the European side is populous and dynamic, Beykoz is mostly the peaceful one.

  • Letters from Vidin: a Study of Ottoman Governmentality and Politics of Local Administration, 1864-1877
LETTERS FROM VIDIN: A STUDY OF OTTOMAN GOVERNMENTALITY AND POLITICS OF LOCAL ADMINISTRATION, 1864-1877 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Mehmet Safa Saracoglu ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Carter Vaughn Findley, Adviser Professor Jane Hathaway ______________________ Professor Kenneth Andrien Adviser History Graduate Program Copyright by Mehmet Safa Saracoglu 2007 ABSTRACT This dissertation focuses on the local administrative practices in Vidin County during 1860s and 1870s. Vidin County, as defined by the Ottoman Provincial Regulation of 1864, is the area that includes the districts of Vidin (the administrative center), ‛Adliye (modern-day Kula), Belgradcık (Belogradchik), Berkofça (Bergovitsa), İvraca (Vratsa), Rahova (Rahovo), and Lom (Lom), all of which are located in modern-day Bulgaria. My focus is mostly on the post-1864 period primarily due to the document utilized for this dissertation: the copy registers of the county administrative council in Vidin. Doing a close reading of these copy registers together with other primary and secondary sources this dissertation analyzes the politics of local administration in Vidin as a case study to understand the Ottoman governmentality in the second half of the nineteenth century. The main thesis of this study contends that the local inhabitants of Vidin effectively used the institutional framework of local administration ii in this period of transformation in order to devise strategies that served their interests. This work distances itself from an understanding of the nineteenth-century local politics as polarized between a dominating local government trying to impose unprecedented reforms designed at the imperial center on the one hand, and an oppressed but nevertheless resistant people, rebelling against the insensitive policies of the state on the other.

The concession became the arena for international competition, and revealed the critical roles of multinational companies, consortiums, and the international banking in the electrification business of Istanbul, along with the various diplomatic maneuvers of European and American states, which depicted the diffusion of foreign capital into the Ottoman lands.
