While the 12 of us have been fairly well-immersed in our penultimate engagement of this phase of the program (our 5-week long work placements), none of us could have missed the huge buzz of anticipation surrounding a long-awaited potential Triple Crown winner, on whom fate struck the cruellest of blows on Friday last week. Each trainee has been placed with one of a range of people and organisations, including trainers, bloodstock agents, sales companies and veterinarians, in locations spanning from east coast to west here in the U.S. Some had been fortunate enough (thanks to placements with New York-based operations) to experience the atmosphere and build-up at the epicentre of it all in Belmont Park, and while the announcement of I'll Have Another's late scratch was a firm reminder that nothing can be taken for granted in racing, it was still an exceptional few weeks to savour. For those working on the backside, there surely couldn't have been a more memorable opportunity. Ohio-native Tricia Calkins has been working at the New York Racing Association and spent her first few weeks alongside the NYRA executive staff, working on final preparations for Belmont day and upcoming NYRA presentations.
