Another winning season is in store for the returnee laden Canadians. The Clansmen will be without the services of first-rate fullback Terry Bailey (866 yards rushing in 1973), but have a do-everything athlete in Lui Passaglia and an experienced in Nelson Ryan. teams have manhandled SFU in each of the last two seasons and the Clansmen will be bent on making amends when Montana visits beautiful Burnaby the first weekend of the 1974 season.

The offense will be without the exciting running of Jim Smith (1252 yards), but the backfield has good depth and the line has four starters back. The line play will highlight the defense's efforts, but to make the unit solid overall the secondary has to be developed. Coach Peasley is pleased with the squad's cohesiveness, and a team that plays together can of ten be a w inner. Six home games w on't h u rt e ith e r .

Marshall Brantley and Mark Fredback rack ed up 1200 yards and six yards per carry between them in 1973. A new face at cen ter is the only change in the line. Defensively, holes must be plugged in the line and the secondary. Linebacking and defensive end play is bound to be strong with talented veterans returning. With only eight lettermen gone from last year's young squad, the Vikings and

MSU, w ith four o f s ix league games a t home, w ill have an excellent shot at reversing the outcome of last year's league race which was won by Boise's 6-0 mark. The Cats were 5-1. Plenty of starters and a host of lettermen return. Halfback Wayne Edwards heads the return of everyone in the back- field. Eight defensive starters return, but All-American Bill Kollar has departed at defensive tackle. However, Wayne Hammond (6-5, 252) may be as good.

Injuries destroyed the Bengals hopes of a title shot in 1973. A season-opening bombardment in a showdown w ith Montana S ta te was also damaging in 1973. A number of reasons are cited for the optimistic look at 1974. Injured offensive linemen John Roman (guard) and Wil Grant( center) are back. First-rate receivers return in Tom Hofmann and Craig Norby. Running backs are plentiful and all-conference ta ilb a c k Rene* G arnett is now a d efensive back. The Broncos ability to put points on the scoreboard has not been questioned the last few years, and 1974 does not appear to be an exception. Quarterback Jim Mc Millan accounted for 172 yards each game last year and hit on 61 per cent of his pass attempts. He and the return of the backfield means instant offense. The loss of 1973's big and talented offensive line could prove troublesome. BSU has good size, including 6-9, 260-pound Ron Franklin, in the defensive line. Exper ienced linebackers and capable secondary personnel complete the defense.

—-41 — • The Big Sky Conference

The Big Sky Conference was formed in February, 1963, when the presidents and athletic directors of six Rocky Mountain universities met in Spokane. The original con ference members were Gonzaga, Idaho, Idaho State, Mon tana, Montana State and Weber. Gonzaga entered the conference as a non-football playing school. The conference derived its name from a pair of Mon tanans and a Washington sports editor. A. B. Guthrie, Great Falls, Montana, wrote a novel entitled “The Big Sky” and Jack Hallowell, former Montana State Adver tising director, promoted the Big Sky theme as a nickname for the state. Harry Missildine, Spokesman-Review sports editor, picked up the name and in a sports column pro moted the name Big Sky as the name of the conference. On February 25, 1963, the conference adopted the name— Big Sky Athletic Conference. In 1970 the conference expanded to include Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Boise State Col lege, Boise, Idaho. Both entered as football playing schools. Jack Friel became the first commissioner in 1963, and the offices were established in Pullman, Wash., Friel’s home. Following Friel’s retirement last July, the offices were moved to Boise, Idaho, and John Roning was named commissioner. The Commissioner

John Roning was named Big Sky Commissioner to re place Jack Friel, who retired July 1, 1971. Friel was com missioner since the Big Sky Conference’s inception in 1963. Not only was there a change at the helm, but the league offices were moved to Boise and a conference sports in formation director, Dan Peters, appointed. Roning first entered the collegiate athletic picture at the University of Minnesota as an end for Bernie Bierman’s Golden Gophers from 1932-34. Bierman also coached at Montana from 1919-21. Roning coached in Minnesota high school leagues before a three-year stint at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn., before returning to Minnesota for gradu ate work. Following naval service during World War II, Roning joined the Utah State University football staff and served four years as head football coach and athletic di rector for the Aggies. He was twice named Skyline Con ference “Coach of the Year.” Roning then became head football coach at the University of Denver and was the Pioneer headman for six years. He then moved to the University of South Dakota in 1960. The Grizzly Cup

Initiated in 1921, the Grizzly Cup is the University of Montana's oldest athletic award. Dr. W. E. Schreiber, a long time head of the UM physical education department, began the award which is usually given to a senior. It is awarded to the athlete who best represents the University on and off the playing field.

The latest recipient is Robin Selvig, a senior guard on last sea son's fine Grizzly basketball team. A product of tiny Outlook High School in eastern Montana, Selvig overcame a knee operation to lead UM to 19 wins against only eight losses in his final season. He was given second team all-conference recognition and voted UM's outstand ing defensive player at the close of the 1973-74 campaign.
