T-BALL t BASEBALL Pair of shutouts for 10-4 Pirates The Pirates collected a pair of shutouts last week to improve to 10-4 on the season. The Fernandina Beach High School baseball team shut out visiting Conifer High School out of Colorado 10-0 on March 27. Gabe Mathews threw five shutout innings for the win. The FBHS Pirates shut out Fletcher 7-0 on March 28. Jacob Wertman threw five innings, and Bryant Cullen went two for the shutout. The Pirates hosted Tift Area, Ga., on Tuesday. They travel to Atlantic Coast Thursday and play at Episcopal Friday. FBHS is back home Monday with Paxon. First pitch is at 6 p.m. Three home games this week for Hornets Nick Love threw a complete game shutout Friday night to steer the Hornets’ to a 2-0 vic- tory over host Suwannee High Friday night. Josh Bedell-Murray had a pair of hits, and David Alexander added a double. “It was a big win for us,” said Fred Matricardi, head baseball coach at Yulee High School. The YHS Hornets are at home all week. They hosted Cook County Tuesday, are home at 6 p.m. today with Tift Area and play host to Archer at 4 p.m. Thursday.

t SOFTBALL PHOTOS BETH JONES/NEWS-LEADER T-ball games were played on three different fields Saturday morning at the Buccaneer Sports Complex, with Fernandina Beach Babe Ruth League’s youngest players taking the field. Lady Hornets 11-8; Lady Pirates at 9-7 on season The Lady Hornets finished 2-2 in a spring break tournament at Daytona Beach. The Yulee High School baseball team beat University and Lincoln Park Academy and suffered losses to Santa Fe and Bayside. Linzie LaFavor hit a walk-off home run against University, and Caleigh Balestra led Yulee in hits during the weekend. Yulee lost to Bishop Kenny 4-3 in eight innings on March 27. Two errors in the seventh allowed Kenny to knot the score. “The game ended on a great diving catch by Casey Erb that was ruled a non-catch letting the Kenny runner score,” YHS Coach Chris Hicken said. The week ended on a 8-1 loss to Baker County on Thursday. LaFavor hit in Erb for the Lady Hornets’ lone run. Yulee lost captain and four-year starter McKenzie Flowers to injury in the game. “It was a close game until McKenzie was hurt. The girls really look up to her and it took the wind out of our sails,” Hicken said. The Lady Hornets (11-8) were scheduled to play at Fernandina Beach Friday, but the game was canceled because of the weather and has not been rescheduled. Yulee heads to Ocala this weekend for the Doc for Life Tournament. • The FBHS Lady Pirates opened this week with a 22-0 shutout over Lee High School on Monday. The game went three innings. The Lady Pirates (9-7) took on a pair of dis- trict foes last week in Raines and Ribault. Raines managed a 3-2 win over the lady Pirates on March 27. The host Lady Vikings scored in the bottom of the first and added a run in the second. The Lady Pirates answered in the fifth when Sarah Fronheiser was walked to kick off the inning; she was then moved over into scoring position by Maya Hernandez. Daylee Puca was hit by a pitch, Shelbea Holland was walked to load the bases, and Kylie Tate was also walked, sending Fronheiser home for the inning’s only run. Rained led 2-1. Holland led things off with a single to right field in the seventh; Tate and Grace Adkins were walked to load the bases with no outs. Jordyn Foley’s fielder’s choice scored Holland to knot the score. FBHS hurler Holland held the Vikings score- less in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. The Lady Pirates put a runner into scoring position when Puca hit a double to left field, but could not plate the run. Raines scored the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth for the win. Holland recorded 15 strike outs, issued five walks and allowed just four hits for the game. The Lady Pirates rebounded on Thursday, beating Ribault 15-5 in another district matchup. The Lady Pirates put four runs on the board in the first inning. The Lady Trojans responded with two runs in the bottom. FBHS added three more runs in the second thanks to an RBI double by Tate. The Lady Pirates led 7-2, and tacked on two more in the fourth. Foley, who tried to stretch her two-RBI double to a triple, was thrown out at third. FBHS led 9-2. Ribault scored two in the bottom of the inning. FBHS answered with a leadoff triple in the fifth by Morgan Graham, who scored on a wild pitch. Tate hit a three-RBI triple; Sol Burruel scored Tate on a sacrifice fly; and Foley scored the sixth run of the inning on a passed ball. FBHS scored one more in the seventh. Adkins struck out seven and walked one in five innings of play.
