4 WELCOME! Every year a staple of this guide is a series of testimonials from our friends, neighbors and community leaders talking about what they love about living here. Year after year, their answers are both consistent and surprising. We hear common threads of why this is such a great place to live and raise a family; how this region offers a colorful palette of arts, culture and education; and how a weekend here can include a hike in the woods, a game at the Dome and a five-star meal downtown no matter the season. But we also hear about caring friends and colleagues, unique neighborhoods, growing businesses, and how people have found their way back to call Central New York home after residing in other parts of the country.

Central New York is a community of neighbors who are eager to see this region not only survive, but thrive — and thrive it has. Our community is growing in new and exciting ways all of the time.

Whether you are looking for a place to start a business or raise a family — or both — this area has it all: jobs, homes, communities, great schools, health care, growing industries, countless ways to have fun, and one of the best quality of life standards in the entire country.

We are focused on the future and working tirelessly to position ourselves on the front lines of the next generation of technology development, new innovations, educational leadership and health care breakthroughs.

Talk to these friends, neighbors and community leaders and they will tell you what this place is all about — people chasing the future and pinning it down, right here in Central New York. Businesses of all shapes and sizes are investing in the region and its people. We are working, planning, building, strategizing and growing — together.

There is so much that makes this region special and unique — our seasons are the best example of that! You’ll need your sunglasses in July and your snow boots in January, but we know how to have great fun wearing both — sometimes at the same time.

We hope this publication helps you understand what a fantastic place the Central New York is as you consider making our home, your home.

Welcome to Central New York. We hope you love it as much as we do!

Kaitlyn Head, director of sales and marketing, Greek Peak Mountain Resort, Cortland

I AM DRAWN TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE of the small-town feel where everyone says hello to everyone with a warm smile. The local businesses collaboratively make an effort to connect with the community and share their passion. Each and every one has a unique story from where they started to where they are now.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNT IS Greek Peak. I grew up with the mountain in my backyard; skiing since I was 2 and snowboarding since I was 10. Growing up, I’ve met so many great people on the mountain and now, it has grown to a year-round destination with activities for everyone to enjoy. The restaurants are a great local spot to grab a bite, enjoy live entertainment and conversation. The mountain or tubing hill make winter enjoyable for everyone and the adventure center and waterpark give you that adrenaline thrill at any point in the year.

I FEEL MOST AT HOME riding my horses on family land, enjoying the peaceful sounds of nature around me. The views of the mountains or overlooking the city, both give me that comfort of home.

CENTRAL NEW YORK IS GREAT FOR the natural beauty of the area. We are so lucky to have the Finger Lakes around us surrounded by locally owned wineries, breweries and cideries.

Centrally located in the state, with rail lines and the Erie Canal nearby, Syracuse was a perfect place to brew and distribute beer during the 1800s. Brewery business peaked during the 1890s when the brewing industry employed 400 people locally and produced about 300,000 barrels of beer and ale each year, according to the Onondaga Historical Association. Prohibition all but wiped out the industry before it began to re-emerge in 1994 when the microbrewery trend began to sweep across the country, including here in Central New York, which is now home to more than a dozen microbreweries.

Syracuse also ranked No. 16 on a U.S. News and World Report list of the Best Affordable Places to Live in the U.S. in 2018 and was No. 48 overall on the list of best places to live in the United States. From U.S. News & World Report: “Syracuse is more affordable than other major U.S. metro areas, making it a popular place to live for families and retirees. Young professionals also enjoy the region, both for its prices and because there’s plenty to do.” Central New York offers a wide variety of housing and remarkably low interest rates. The rental market is also strong, with multiple family dwellings leading demand. So whether you are looking for a big family house, a trendy urban condo or something in between, you’ll find it here.

28 MEET THE NEIGHBORS Chris Dugan, president, Knowles Precision Devices, Cazenovia I AM DRAWN TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE I love Cazenovia in the summer. It has a great diner, two good coffee shops and a number of pubs and cafes. I am a cyclist and enjoy going for a long bike ride on Saturday mornings, then walking over to the Saturday street market to buy locally sourced vegetables, meats and cheese. I meet someone new every week there. MY FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNT IS Empire Farm Brewery in Cazenovia. You can go with a big group, or show up alone and feel equally comfortable. In the summer and fall, you can sit outside; the menu is full of hearty fare (I like the spicy pork burger), and it’s always fun to order a flight of sample-size beers. I FEEL MOST AT HOME in the summer, where I spend a lot of time paddle boarding or playing full-contact croquet with my boys, followed by a barbecue on my deck. In the fall/winter, I like sitting in my recliner in front of the fireplace, watching the deer in the meadow in my backyard, reading or playing guitar. CENTRAL NEW YORK IS GREAT FOR its changing seasons. When I graduated from University of Rochester in 1987, I moved away. In 2001, I moved back after living in Virginia, California, Pennsylvania and Panama. You can hunt, fish, ski, snowshoe, kayak, and waterski within 20 minutes of most houses. A young family can afford a decent house in a safe neighborhood, and a bad traffic day is a 10-minute delay. There are festivals in Clinton Square and a terrific outdoor concert venue. The quality of life is really exceptional. And the local economy has really diversified. I’ve been around, and CNY is a pretty good place to be right now.

MEET THE NEIGHBORS Dr. Juan Lopez and Dr. Yamilka Serrano, owner and associate of Dental Health Solutions, Fulton WE ARE DRAWN TO OUR NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE it’s a small, peaceful, tight-knit neighborhood. Store access is only a 10- to 15-minute drive away. We like where we live and work because of the amazing communities. Dr. Lopez does a lot of work for the community through Friends of Fulton Parks to help restore and rejuvenate the community. OUR FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNTS ARE a few local joints in town. Often, we get lunch with our staff from Red Baron. We get our sweet treats from Cathy’s Creations. A favorite place to dine is Mohegan Manor and in the summer, we like to indulge in a seasonal favorite, Shannon’s Hot Dogs by Crystal. We often enjoy seasonal events and activities at Beaver Lake Nature Center. WE FEEL MOST AT HOME playing basketball down at the Fulton War Memorial, hitting the gym, exploring new local restaurants, traveling, taking a stroll in Onondaga Lake Park and staying active in the community. Dr. Lopez is an avid reader who spends a great deal of his free time reading. CENTRAL NEW YORK IS GREAT FOR laying down roots for yourself and your family, and a great place to have a business. The wine business in and around is unlike anything else. 29 THE CITY OF SYRACUSE Average Selling Price of Homes YTD 10/31/2018 The city of Syracuse is a true melting pot of cultures, housing City of Syracuse $101,400 options and communities. 34 CORPORATEad2CCCE7.125x4.875.indd 1 12/22/18 10:53 AM MEET THE NEIGHBORS Dr. Malika Carter, chief diversity officer, SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), Syracuse I AM DRAWN TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE of the genuine people, the good food and the taste of strong coffee, all of which enriches my life. Growing up in a blue-collar family, all three of these ingredients were prominent in my neighborhood. MY FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNT is one of our local farms or community gardens to complement one of my homemade meals and honor the work of a community farmer. I FEEL MOST AT HOME somewhere in or around the SUNY ESF quad. The palpable energy of scholarly and co-curricular activity that spills over into the community is key to why I call the region home. CENTRAL NEW YORK IS GREAT FOR some of the most engaging civic organizations that support service and humanitarian projects in Central New York (CNY) and abroad. Through civic engagement, I have experienced social activities and networking opportunities that are of particular interest to my personal and professional lives. Living in CNY, I have been able to develop professional relationships, enhance my career, become philanthropically active and contribute to the economic development and quality of life of our community. I could list so many positive aspects of life in CNY – events at the New York State Fairgrounds, outdoor activities, easy access to bustling city and calming country, comedy and music shows – the list goes on.

MEET THE NEIGHBORS Edward Levine, RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) technology teacher, PSLA Fowler High School, Syracuse City School District I AM DRAWN TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE I am close to so many personal and professional opportunities. I also like being close to my family in Rochester and still within day-trip distance to the Adirondacks, Canada and many seasonal events around Central New York (CNY). MY FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNT IS Syracuse Martial Arts Association where I work out most days after work. I am very happy to have found a place that has really encouraged me to stay in shape year-round. I FEEL MOST AT HOME surrounded by DIY projects. At work, I help my high school students building robots, drones and any other ideas they have. At home, I build my own drones, but my wife and I have also have gotten into woodworking, so my shop at home is very eclectic. CENTRAL NEW YORK IS GREAT FOR RPAS technology and opportunity. Syracuse and CNY are rich with businesses, people and unique opportunities in areas related to the development of RPAS. I feel very fortunate that so many individuals in the field have worked with us at the Syracuse City School District to build an RPAS educational program for our students. Right now the industry is in a very explosive development phase, both in its technology and business, and my students now have such great potential to shape this maturing field.

35 HIGHER EDUCATION IS WITHIN EASY REACH The 12-county CenterState New York region is fortunate to be home to more than 46 colleges and universities that are fostering tomorrow’s leaders — both in this community and around the world. With nearly 200,000 students seeking an education here, the region has become a magnet for the best and brightest around the globe. These colleges and universities are sharing their talents, too, as they send students and faculty abroad to establish partnerships in business, medicine, science, technology and more. You will likely need proof of address in your school district. If your child is new to school (kindergarten or pre-k), you will likely be required to present a birth certificate, immunization record and a report of a physical exam. If the child is transferring from another school, you may be asked to bring a report card or other transfer paperwork from your child’s last school. The school may also ask for an immunization record and a physical exam report. Many school districts now offer registration instructions, forms and information on their websites. Deborah Eastman, registered nurse, OB/GYN floor, Auburn Community Hospital, Auburn I AM DRAWN TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE this is where I grew up and I know so many people and have such great friends. I love this area because of the change of seasons, and the beauty of the Finger Lakes and attractiveness of a small community. I left this area for a short time and moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but I missed the change of seasons and my friends so much I had to come back. MY FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNT IS sitting outside by my pool with family and friends. I enjoy going out to dinner at great restaurants in the area and then perhaps a cocktail at A.T. Walley & Co. I FEEL MOST AT HOME in a “small-town vibe,” which allows you to know so many people. In addition, being a nurse at Auburn Community Hospital is special because I am able to take care of friends. One of my favorite stories is the day I was able to help a good friend’s daughter deliver her baby at the hospital. There are few things in life as special or as beautiful as being part of a moment like that and being able to share it with someone you know. CENTRAL NEW YORK IS GREAT FOR making friends and simple pleasures in a beautiful setting. I’m thrilled that Auburn Community Hospital continues to grow and offer new services and more jobs, which helps our community prosper. I am proud to say I work at Auburn Community Hospital and happy that I live in this charming community.

54 MEET THE NEIGHBORS

Chad Wright, vice president of technical services, Rapid Response Monitoring, Syracuse I AM DRAWN TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE of the spacious and country feel. There is a small town vibe in our caring community and we are only minutes from the city. My family and I take advantage of the many great community events, so being close by is important to us. MY FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNT IS actually several of the great local spots. My top three are the Empire Brewing Company for downtown feel and the selection of craft beers; Owera Vineyards for the great atmosphere and local New York state wine; and Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub for their delicious Reuben sandwich. I FEEL MOST AT HOME sitting in the backyard, spending time with family and friends while enjoying the fresh air and views of the rolling countryside. CENTRAL NEW YORK IS GREAT FOR raising a family because of the excellent schools and the diversity of access to arts, sports and the outdoors. Having lived in the Washington, D.C. area for the past 20 years, I thoroughly enjoy that Central New York provides affordable housing and similar large urban benefits including theaters, Syracuse University sports and the amphitheater for outdoor concerts.

The area is also a global leader in unmanned aerial systems technology with startups and businesses primed for growth.

I AM DRAWN TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE it is where the action is ... as the saying goes. AIS’ newest office location at 250 Clinton St. is at the heart of downtown Syracuse. Our view from the fifth floor reminds us of the region’s glorious past and helps channel the vibrancy and resilience that is the hallmark of Central New York (CNY) as we spur new business here. Yet, we are located within an hour’s drive of our headquarters in Rome.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNT IS Wegmans in DeWitt. I like to cook from scratch and I can find any ingredient that a recipe calls for at Wegmans. I strive to pick up at least one grocery item that I have never tried before when I shop there – leading to endless discovery and fun while cooking.

I FEEL MOST AT HOME …. at home! Having friends and family over is something that my wife and I enjoy. We are blessed to have good friends. As a freshly minted grandpa, hanging out with my grandson when he visits us from California is the absolute best.

CENTRAL NEW YORK IS GREAT FOR being most welcoming and supportive. CNY has all the advantages of a small town – close-knit community, great place to raise a family and affordable real estate. It’s also home to technology companies working on mission-critical systems solving the nation’s problems and yet only a short road-trip from several major cities. The global impact of the region is tremendous. CNY’s leadership in unmanned aerial systems is an example of how the region is pioneering new technology and capability. Did you know? Business Facilities Rankings Report named New York as the top place to locate an unmanned aerial systems company.

I AM DRAWN TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE Syracuse is a city with a small-town feel. I was raised in Syracuse, but still had opportunities to live in other parts of the country, so I’ve experienced what others had to offer. I chose to stay and raise my kids in Syracuse because of the sense of community, small-town values and security that I’ve experienced. The area offers everything a larger city does and more! My family has enjoyed the professional opportunities, social offerings, cultural arts scene and the many outdoor activities available.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNT IS the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview. The amphitheater has a great selection of musical entertainment. Whether attending a show with friends or family, I love to sit on the lawn, overlooking the lake enjoying a nice summer evening.

I FEEL MOST AT HOME at several locations throughout the year with my family and friends. The Carrier Dome for lacrosse, football or basketball. The front patio at Limp Lizard on a hot summer night or at Fulton and Brewerton speedways catching some dirt track racing. The staple in the fall is always Beak & Skiff orchards for apple picking and wine tasting.
