iTune Basics for the iPhone

To take advantage of the full range of iTunes offerings, four apps have to be on your iPhone. If they are not already installed, you will find them in the :

• iTunes Store • iTunes U

Music app:

The Music app will open to the last screen you were looking at. Tap on Library at the bottom left hand corner of your screen to pull up the screen below.

What’s in the Menu?

• Library: Music you have downloaded • For You: Recommendations for you based on your downloaded music choices • Browse: Searchable music and music videos • Radio: Apple Radio—free for a couple of months and then you pay • Search: Search window if you are looking for a specific item

Organizing your Library

You can…

• Create Playlists • Organize your library by artist, albums, or songs.

In this image, the Library is organized by songs. You can see: • Title • Artist • Album song is from • Length of song

This symbol means the song is in the Apple cloud and needs to be downloaded to the device.

Create a Playlist:

• Tap RED Playlists on library screen and this screen should appear.

Tap on New Playlist

• When the screen below appears, name your new playlist by tapping on Playlist name and then type your title.

• Type title for new Playlist

• Add a description for the Playlist

• Tap Add Music

• Your screen will ask where you want to get the music from. Tap on your choice.

• In the example above, Songs was selected. The middle image shows the song choices. The image on the far right shows the list of songs chosen for Demo 4. Tap Done and you have a new Playlist that will show up in your library.

Deleting a Playlist

• Open the Playlist you wish to delete and look for the red circle with three dots on the right hand side of the screen. Tap the circle.

• A screen similar to the one below will appear. Tap Delete from Library.

Other choices in your bottom menu:

These choices allow you to look for new music sources and eventually will cost you money. is a monthly service that gives you access to all of the music in Apple’s library. If you just want to purchase music by the song or album, you must use the iTunes App store.

Playing music:

• Open your Library and tap on the song, album, or playlist you want to hear. The controls will appear down at the bottom of your screen.

• You can use other apps while your music is playing. iTunes Store App:

At the iTunes Store, you can purchase… • Music • Movies • TV Shows • Tones

Notice the three parallel lines in the upper right hand corner of the screen. They provide additional choices.

• Wish List • • Previews

To Add to an item to your Wish List, Search for your item. When it appears on your screen, tap the share button and tap on add to wish list.

Siri tab allows you to tag music playing around you. The directions are provided for you. See the next image.

Previews list:

Songs you preview while searching for music will automatically appear on your Previews List tab. You preview a song simply by tapping on it. It will start to play and when you tap again, it stops.

You will not buy a song or album unless you tap on the price and verify the purchase in pop-up dialog box. You probably have an Apple account so the price is charged to the credit card you registered with Apple.

The three dots at the far right of the menu on the bottom also give you additional choices and shows the status of your downloads and purchases.

Movies and TV Shows:

The iTunes stores offers a variety of movies and TV shows to buy or rent.

Depending on your WiFi service, it can take some time to download these items. Best to download before you want to watch them!

Once you download the, you find them with the More button. Then tap on Purchased, and then Movies or TV Shows.

Podcasts App:

If you like podcasts then you certainly want this app. It works pretty much like the Music app, only it is podcast shows ad episodes rather than albums and songs. You can subscribe to podcasts through this app. Or, you may find a podcast online you like. When you subscribe to it, the episodes will show up in this app.

Listen Now lists the podcasts you subscribe to. Click on the one you want to listen to. Once again, the little cloud icon means the episode needs to download. Just tap on it.

Menu

The Library lists the episodes of your podcasts in chronological order.

The Menu in purple allows you to navigate through this app by show, episode, or episodes that have been downloaded.

The Browse tab is a sales pitch similar to the Music app. You may find it helpful or not.

The Search Tab allow you to look for podcasts on just about every imaginable topic.

Subscribe

Again, subscribe to a podcast and it will automatically appear in your library! iTune U: iTunes U is a fabulous if you love to learn. It offers courses from around the world on a myriad of topics. Most of them are free!

It has a similar arrangement to the apps we have already looked at:

• My Courses • Featured • Top Charts • Browse • Search

Featured, Top Charts, and Browse offer suggestions. The Search tab allows you to search by topic.

This is an image from Top Charts. You can see that there is a breadth of topics from outstanding institutions. Just tab on one you are interested in to see more detail.

Here is one on human emotions. You can see the topics and read the reviews. If you are interested, just tap Subscribe and the course materials will appear in the My Courses tab.
