During 47 days of combat, nearly 100,000 U.S. “doughboys” were wounded, and more than 26,000 were killed in action during a chapter of “The Great War” that few Americans today know. Many of the casualties of that battle were from Illinois. This original documentary series follows retired Ottawa, Illinois music teacher Roger Amm, grandson of Pontiac, Illinois farmer Gustave Amm who served in the 131st Infantry Regi- ment, as he embarks on a global quest to honor his grandfather. It becomes more than just a journey of discovery as Roger uncovers a previously untold story of the front line experience in that conflict, and how the events his grandfather participated in ultimately shaped the global map, Illinois, and his own family. “A Golden Cross to Bear: A History of the 33rd Division in World War 1; Episode 1: A New Kind of War” is nominated for five Chicago / Midwest Emmy Awards including Outstand- ing Achievement for a Historical Documentary. The first episode of this five-part original documentary series, directed and produced by Kane Farabaugh and his Ottawa, Illinois based KaneStar Productions together with WTVP.
