Viewer Guide February 2016 Honoring BLACK HISTORY Month On the Cover BLACK HISTORY MONTH EYES ON THE PRIZE: THEN AND NOW Eyes on the Prize: Then and Now is a half hour special that re-examines the groundbreaking documentary series, “Eyes on the Prize,” from the filmmakers’ perspective, and the viewpoint of civil rights activists then and now. This intergenerational dialogue takes the civil rights movement and places it under a microscope – revisiting, reframing and re-asking key questions while contextualizing those issues in a contemporary way. With the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, the 60th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the recent national spotlight on issues of race, inequality and police brutality, the time has come to have such critical conversations about our storied past, present and future. While there have been victories to celebrate, the country continues to be plagued by some of the same problems of yesteryear. What does all of this mean for the next generation? Featuring interviews with “Eyes on the Prize” filmmakers, thought leaders, current day activists, scholars, and civil rights leaders, this special will explore how far we’ve come, how far we have yet to go, the meaning and significance of the ongoing struggle, and the FEBRUARY 2016 FEBRUARY next steps towards equality. / KLCS VIEWER MAGAZINE VIEWER KLCS PAGE 1 / PAGE SUPPORT · DONATE · SPONSOR · WWW.KLCS.ORG History/Biography/Documentary AFROPOP: THE ULTIMATE CULTURAL EXCHANGE The anthology series Afropop: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange is an exploration of the present-day realities and contemporary lifestyles of Africans, both on the continent and in the evolving diaspora. The documentary chronicles a trip made by academics and historians to Sierra Leone in May of 2013 as they retrace the path of the 53 Africans who rebelled against their captors and seized the slave schooner Amistad in 1839, leading to a watershed US Supreme Court decision. Their goal: to visit the 10 villages where the Amistad rebels once lived; interview the elders about their history and how the inci- dent is remembered; and search for the long-lost ruins of Lomboko, the slave trad- ing factory where the Amistad Africans were incarcerated and loaded onto a slave ship bound for the New World. By interviewing local villagers, fishermen and truck drivers, and accessing their oral accounts, Ghosts of Amistad: In The Footsteps Of The Rebels aims to recover the lost history of the Amistad insurrection, told from a seldom-voiced perspective in the historical struggle against slavery. But these delicate, transparent, shrimp-like creatures are crucial to the Antarctic ecosystem and, maybe, to the future of all our oceans. The population of krill has crashed since the 1970s for reasons that continue to baffle the experts. A leading theory says that krill’s life cycle is driven by an internal body clock that responds to the waxing and waning of the Antarctic ice pack. As climate change alters the timing of the ice pack, their life cycle is disrupted—or so the theory goes. To test it, NOVA travels on the Polarstern, a state-of-the-art research vessel, to a place rarely, if ever, visited before: the vast ice pack that grows around Antarctica in the winter months, a frigid seasonal continent twice the size of the U.S. The Polarstern fights its way through the pack to establish camps on the ice, from which scientists dive beneath the surface in search of the ice caves in which juvenile krill shelter during the winter. The implications go well beyond the Antarctic ecosystem, for it’s through similar shifts in the timing of the seasons that climate change may have its most devastating impact on the natural world across the globe.
