Dorothy Pomerantz, Forbes Staff I write about Hollywood and run the Celebrity 100 List. BUSINESS 10/31/2012 @ 2:08PM Celebrities Who Give Us Nightmares Reality show fame can be lucrative (just look at Bethenny Frankel) but it can also go horribly wrong. Spencer Pratt made a splash with his villainous performance on The Hills, but since then his career hasn’t work out quite like he had hoped. Instead of writing books, starting a fashion line and producing more TV, Pratt ended up standing by Heidi Montag’s side while she underwent multiple plastic surgeries to turn herself into the world’s saddest living Barbie doll. Perhaps that’s why the public sees Pratt as the creepiest Just in time for Halloween, here are the celebrities who creep America out the most, based on survey celebrity out there, according to E-Poll Market data from E-Poll Market Research, whose E-Score Research. Another reality star who creeps us all out: Courtney Stodden. The teen is best-known for marrying 50- year-old actor Doug Hutchinson when she was only 16. Somehow, these two are still getting publicity. Maybe it’s because of the way Stodden dresses.

  • Malawi's Orphans
CHAPTER FOURTEEN MALAWI’S ORPHANS: CHILDREN’S RIGHTS IN RELATION TO HUMANITARIANISM, COMPASSION, AND CHILDCARE Andrea Freidus1 My first reaction is the feeling of helplessness, and hopelessness. Seeing so many eyes of the orphans, innocent and pure makes me feel a little over- whelmed…Poverty and HIV/AIDS, malaria, are now all over southern Africa… Without a heart of compassion and love, without a true passion in helping and offering Madonna could not do this. So I give more credit to her now than before, and I see this as a gift to Malawi rather than a tool of celebrity propaganda. —MSU undergraduate after viewing Madonna’s documentary on Malawi. As an assignment for a women’s studies undergraduate course, students viewed the film “I am Because We Are.” Produced by Madonna to raise awareness about her organization, Raising Malawi, it focuses on the situa- tion of orphans and AIDS in Malawi. Students were asked to respond to the content of the documentary including their perceptions of orphans in Malawi, their overall reaction, and the film’s impact on their desire to be connected or involved with these issues. The above quote is one of many that captures the ability of humanitarians and the organizations they sup- port to use the media to foster an emotional response. This response is based on the recognition of a common humanity and the need to address suffering. The student’s reaction highlights the power of the image of the orphan to bring about a sense of compassion drawing on the innocence of children.

  • Teen Titans Go! to the Movies’
Movie Review: ‘Teen Titans Go! To the Movies’ NEW YORK — Though a mixed bag of good values and a bit of dodgy humor renders it acceptable but not ideal for kids, sharp satire makes the witty animated comedy “Teen Titans Go! To the Movies” (Warner Bros.) a hoot for their elders. As it skewers a broad range of subjects, from some politicians’ preoccupation with the size of their hands to 1980s-style anthems of affirmation, the film wins smiles and laughs at a remarkably steady pace. Even the plot is a vehicle for mockery. A youthful version of Batman’s sidekick Robin (voice of Scott Menville) becomes obsessed by the fact that, unlike all other superheroes, no movie has ever been made about him. The other members of the ensemble of crime fighters Robin leads — shape-shifting Beast Boy (voice of Greg Cipes), human-mechanical mashup Cyborg (voice of Khary Payton), teleporting Raven (voice of Tara Strong) and alien princess Starfire (voice of Hynden Walch) — don’t share his fixation with Hollywood. But, as supportive pals, they go along for the ride. Through their battle with master mind manipulator Slade (voice of Will Arnett) the team acquires the evil nemesis considered essential to their quest. And they eventually convince Tinseltown director Jade Wilson (voice of Kristen Bell) to feature them. But Robin’s ego and the silliness of his pals get in the way, leading to a breakup of the group. As Robin and his buddies strive to be taken seriously, this big-screen adaptation of the Cartoon Network TV series hilariously harpoons a wide range of pop-culture targets in a manner that will amuse grownups.

  • BODY TYPE: TYPOGRAPHIC TATTOOS Or HOW I BECAME a TATTOO EXPERT WITHOUT REALLY TRYING
BODY TYPE: TYPOGRAPHIC TATTOOS or HOW I BECAME A TATTOO EXPERT WITHOUT REALLY TRYING By Ina Saltz, author of “Body Type: Intimate Messages Etched in Flesh” (Abrams Image, 2006) MY INVOLVEMENT WITH THE WORLD OF TATTOOS began in the most unlikely of ways. I was traveling cross-town on the M86 bus when I spotted an interesting-looking young man with a large text-only tattoo on his right forearm; it spelled out “happy” in a typeface which I instantly recognized as Helvetica. The fact that it was in lower-case letters and so tightly kerned that the letters were touching was especially intriguing to me as a designer and a typophile. I had never seen a tattoo quite like this one—sans serif! Not being in the habit of talking to strangers in New York City, I debated mightily before approaching him...but my curiosity finally got the better of me. “Are you a graphic designer?” I asked. Why, yes, he was. “And would you mind if I took a photo of your tattoo to show my students? I teach typography at City College.” No problem. I whipped out my digital camera and managed to get one shot and to grab his proffered business card before I jumped off at my stop. That evening I uploaded the photo and went to the Web site on his business card to send him the image with a proper thank you message. Imagine my astonishment to find our entire conversation recounted on his blog! As often happens when encountering something new, having seen one typographic tattoo, I now started to see them everywhere (it was August and a lot of skin was visible).

As language teachers we are in a curious and unique position. We do not have a fi xed subject in the same way that the history teacher teaches history or the geography teacher teaches geography . Consolidated as the girl power discourse and girls in crisis discourse, the tension between these two intertwined discourses created a space for new narratives of female adolescence in the decade between 1995 and 2005. As sites of cultural construction and representation, teen films reveal the narratives of girlhood. The films under consideration serve as useful exemplars for an examination of how such discourses become mainstreamed, pervading society’s image of female adolescence.
