Ravening Wolves by MONIC A FARRELL THIS IS THE WORK OF "CATHOLIC ACTION" IN 1942. IT COULD HAPPEN IN CANADA IN 19?? ~ ~ z ~ ~ ....I ....I W § CI:: CI:: • u..< > ..0 < ~ ~z 0 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ PREFACE TO THE FIRST CANADIAN EDITION "Ravening Wolves" was first published in Australia by Miss Monica Farrell, converted Roman Catholic who was horrified at the record of bloodshed and murder committed by Roman Catholic Actionists led by priests and monks dur ing the years 1941- 43 in Europe. Seeing the same evil system at work in Austmlia, seek ing to bring that sunny land under the heel of the Pope, she vigorously opposed the Papal claims and sought to awaken Australians to the danger. As the Papacy is a world-wide organization and its tactics are dictated from Rome, its methods are similar in each country and we in Canada can see the same sinister system working in the same way in our midst. Having been driven from her own home in Ireland by persecution, Miss Farrell continued to witness, first in Ireland, later in England, Scot land, Wales and Australia, to the oower of a Risen Saviour and the helplessness of a wafer God. The work she founded in Aust~alia is called "The Light and Truth Gospel Crusade," which is a mission for the conversion of Roman Catholics and the awakening of P.rotestants. That our readers may have an idea of the type of person she is, we give the follow ing brief summary of her life story. Monica Farrell was born of Roman Catholic parents in the city of Dublin. The youngest member of a large family, she saw three of her sisters enter the Dominican Order of ~ Nuns, one brother preparing to be a priest while still very young died before her birth, one brother became a secular priest and is at prf'sent in Australia, a third brother entered a monastery, but later died. It was inevitable that she should have serious thoughts about religion from childhood. and not surprising that she should be a very enthusiastic member of the Roman Church. A Protestant Bible, the property of her Protestant grand · mother was in the house until she was seven years old, and a few stories read from it made a very strong impression on her young mind. The death of h~r mother when she was seven years old, left little Monica an orphan as her father had died six months before she was born. "RAVENING WOLVES" In th~ great upheaval which followed her mother's death, the home furniture including the Bible went under the Written and compiled by auctioneer's hammer. MONICA FARRELL Some years after, Monica becoming alarmed at the Light and Truth Gospel Crusade thought that all Protestants would go to hell because they did not belong to the "One True Church," asked her sister "Beware of false prophets which come to you in to send her to a school where she knew she would contact sheeps' clothing but inwardly they are ravening Protestants. wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits." Matt. 7: 15, 16. With a view to converting all the Protestants in the school to the "One True Church," Monica set off to school Although conscious of the fact that there are many and her first battle was with a Scotch Presbyterian girl named Marjory. sincere and loveable people who are Roman Catholics by accident of birth, it is, nevertheless, true that Romanism It was very largely due to the influence of this girl's as a system has always been relentlessly cruel and that tor arguments that Monica had her eyes opened to the Pagan ture and murder have ever been weapons used, not only ism of the Roman system. Her present technique is, first of all, to call her devotees to a Crusade of prayer, claiming a country for Mary. Secondly (if the Protestant population allows her to get away with it) to dedicate the country to Mary. This done, it only remains for her to urge her people to a holy warfare, to actually possess that which they have already claimed by dedication, and Protestants, who have by their silence consented to an act carried out in their name, are rudely awakened to the fact that they have unconsciously betrayed their country, their people, and their God. 10 RAVENING WOLVES RAVENING WOLVES 11 THE WAR DECLARED full submission to all directions of the Pope and all the On the 9th May, 1948, when Cardinals Spellman and Bishops in communion with him." 5 The disposal of corpses in an ethnicized civil war: Croatia, 1941–451 Alexander Korb Introduction In May 1943, an Italian general who was being held prisoner of war was discussing the course of the war with his colleagues. He was describing an incident that had occurred in the territory occupied by Italy in Croatia and, unknown to him, he was overheard by his British supervisors. The incident concerned the recovery of the corpses of murdered Serbs thrown by the perpetrators – Croatian nationalists – into karst caves, which are typical land formations in that area. ‘The exhumations were a dreadful task’, the general said. ‘Nobody could enter the cave because the rotting bodies stank so badly. One man who we lowered down on a rope fainted and we had to pull him out again.’ 2 It seems that the soldiers were finally equipped with gas masks. During the Second World War, up to 45 million people lost their lives.3 Almost a quarter of them were victims of targeted attacks with the intent to kill and mass murders, rather than armed hostili- ties. While the death of the victims can be said to have been well researched, many historians consider their task completed once the persecuted individuals have perished. Yet the disposal of bodies in cases of genocide is more than just a field where further research is required; even more important is that the treatment of the dead reveals a great deal about the perpetrators, how they saw themselves, and the approach to and nature of their violence. Local Memories of Wartime Violence: Commemorating World War Two in Gospić MILA DRAGOJEVIĆ Department of Politics, University of the South, Sewanee, TN [email protected] VJERAN PAVLAKOVIĆ Department of Cultural Studies, University of Rijeka [email protected] How do dominant state narratives influence commemorative practices in local communities in different historical periods? We address this question by carrying out a study of World War Two commemorations in Gospić in two distinct periods of a political regime transition. The study is based on the documents from the archive of Gospić, articles from the local paper, existing scholarly publications on this area, as well as reports from state institutions and non-governmental organizations. We also photographed standing monuments and graveyards dating back to World War Two, or collected archival images and documentation of those that were removed or destroyed, in a fifty-kilometer radius around Gospić. We show how the narratives, symbols, and rituals that formed part of commemorations of World War Two violence changed when competing political actors attempted to establish their political legitimacy or gain political support. In the tenth and eleventh century it existed at the intersection of a variety of cultural, political, social, economic, and religious influences – making it a fascinating subject for a study of frontiers and borderlands. Unfortunately few written sources from this period survive, and those that do are often vague or ambiguous. It is the archaeological record, therefore, that provides the best hope for answering the many questions left unanswered by the historical record. The remains of burials – bones and grave goods – are by far the most well- documented archaeological evidence available for medieval Slavonia.

JULIJE MAKANEC KAO DUHOVNI ODGOJITELJ USTAŠKE MLADEŽI Petar Macut UDK: 929Makanec, J.:329.18(=163.42)-053.6 Prethodno priopćenje Sažetak: Uspostavom Nezavisne Države Hrvatske pod paskom Ustaškog pokreta došlo je do cjelokupne reorganizacije društva pod njegovom kontrolom. In the first stage, so-called pre-research, mapping was carried out “with the primary goal of establishing the Roma population as a precondition for sampling and descri- bing the community, as well as gathering data on the specificities of the locations inhabited by members of the Roma national minority (e.g. data on the availability of public services, transport connections, access to social events and facilities, utilities infrastructure etc.) The second stage concerned “conducting semi-structured interviews with represen- tatives of the relevant institutions at the level of local self-government units and members of the Roma national minority, as well as conducting seven focus groups with representatives of the relevant institutions at the county level”.

It is based in the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands. Its main functions are to settle legal disputes submitted to it by states and to provide advisory opinions on legal questions submitted to it by duly authorised international branches, agencies, and the UN General Assembly. Established in 1945 by the UN Charter, the Court began work in 1946 as the successor to the Permanent Court of International Justice. The Statute of the International Court of Justice, similar to that of its predecessor, is the main constitutional document constituting and regulating the Court. The ICJ is composed of fifteen judges elected to nine-year terms by the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council from a list of persons nominated by the national groups in the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The election process is set out in Articles 4–19 of the ICJ statute.
