QUE A MELHOR MULHER VENÇA: PROBLEMAS DE IDENTIDADE DE GÊNERO E QUESTÕES DRAG EM “RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE” João Vinícius Nascimento de Jesus (João Bertonie)1 Resumo: Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar os problemas de gênero, em sua abordagem relativa à identidade de gênero, e suas relações com questões drag, queer e LGBT encontrados no reality show estadosunidense “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, que envolve uma competição entre diferentes graus de articidade e habilidades performáticas de drag queens. Articulando autores como Butler (2003, 2006), Zumthor (2001) e Scheschner (2003, 2006), percebemos o quanto o programa televisivo explora questões relativas à legitimação e autenticidade em relação à arte drag e à cultura queer e LGBT e como ele atua de modo a regular produções de articidade e, principalmente, de identidades contemporâneas. Em seu programa, drag queens americanas competem, ao longo de diversas provas que testam seus talentos performáticos, ao título de Próxima Drag Superstar dos EUA. Seu visual assinatura é um cabelo volumoso loiro, expressivos olhos esfumados e um vestido longo que lhe confere uma cintura de ampulheta. Após saudar os jurados fixos e os convidados e explicar o desafio da semana, ela repete o bordão, de forma pomposa e entusiasmada: “Senhores, apertem os cintos, e que a melhor mulher vença!”. -

All rights reserved, but permission to duplicate freely given upon request. www.egale.ca 416-964-7887 185 Carlton Street Toronto, ON Executive Summary The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were generated during the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, under the professed theme that sustainable development should “Leave No One Behind”. This was reiterated within the Ministerial Declaration from the 2017 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development which emphasises the importance of “putting the furthest behind first” (Ministerial Declaration, 2017). Despite this emphasis on inclusion, Canada has not meaningfully incorporated lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, and Two Spirit (LGBTQI2S) communities within the Federal Sustainable Development Agenda. Noticing this gap, Egale Canada Human Rights Trust (Egale) took on the task of assessing how LGBTQI2S communities fit into Canada’s commitment to ‘leaving no one behind’. To do so, we strategically chose to focus on the seven specific SDGs (1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, 16) that address the most pressing areas of concern for LGBTQI2S communities in Canada. It is important to note that the Federal Sustainable Agenda developed by the Canadian government solely focuses on goals 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14 and 15 which prioritise climate, resource management/development, and infrastructure sectors. -

Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Egale Canada Human Rights Trust Team up to Hear from Two-Spirit and Lgbtq Aboriginal People Impacted by Residential Schools
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 4, 2014 TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION AND EGALE CANADA HUMAN RIGHTS TRUST TEAM UP TO HEAR FROM TWO-SPIRIT AND LGBTQ ABORIGINAL PEOPLE IMPACTED BY RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS. TORONTO - The residential school system has had a profound and prolonged impact on Aboriginal people within Canada, the consequences of which have been grave. The experiences of LGBTQ- identified and/or Two Spirit people in these schools have been particularly distinct and have, until now, often went unexamined. Recently, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada teamed up with Egale Canada Human Rights Trust to change this, and on November 5th and 6th, 2014 the two will bring together fifteen direct and intergenerational survivors, from all corners of the country, for a forum to discuss how the schools impact the current social landscape for Two Spirit people. “It’s time we start addressing the intersections of identities that are experienced in our community. When we look at the rates of victimization and bullying of LGBTQ people in Aboriginal communities, we need look no further than the degradation of cultural acceptance that this system has brought,” said Helen Kennedy, Executive Director of Egale Canada Human Rights Trust. “I am thrilled about this collaboration between the TRC and Egale as I believe it will create meaningful awareness and positive change on this issue,” added Kennedy. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, an independent body that oversees the process of providing former students, and anyone who has been affected by the Residential Schools legacy, with an opportunity to share their individual experiences, has brought together thousands of survivors from coast to coast beginning in 2008. -

1 Court File No.: T-370-17 FEDERAL COURT Proposed Class Proceeding TODD EDWARD ROSS, MARTINE ROY and ALIDA SATALIC Plaintiffs - and - HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN Defendant FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT WHEREAS: A. Canada took action against members of the Canadian Armed Forces (the "CAF"), members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (the "RCMP") and employees of the Federal Public Service (the “FPS”) as defined in this Final Settlement Agreement (“FSA”), pursuant to various written policies commencing in or around 1956 in the military and in or around 1955 in the public service, which actions included identifying, investigating, sanctioning, and in some cases, discharging lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members of the CAF or the RCMP from the military or police service, or terminating the employment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees of the FPS, on the grounds that they were unsuitable for service or employment because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression (the “LGBT Purge”); B. In 2016, class proceedings were commenced against Canada in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Quebec Superior Court and the Federal Court of Canada in connection with the LGBT Purge, and those proceedings have been stayed on consent or held in abeyance while this consolidated proposed class action (the “Omnibus Class Action”) has been pursued on behalf of all three of the representative plaintiffs in the preceding actions; C. The plaintiffs, Todd Edward Ross, Martine Roy and Alida Satalic (the “Plaintiffs”) commenced the Omnibus Class Action in the Federal Court (Court File No. T-370-17) on March 13, 2017 by the Statement of Claim attached as Schedule “A”. -

Freedom of expression is the very foundation of gay and lesbian movements. As a peaceful demonstration of civil disobedience, QAIA [Queers Against Israeli Apartheid] members and supporters should march in the parade, authors of their own messages, regardless of what Pride Toronto organizers, or their masters, have to say about it. – Matt Mills, “Let‟s Get Civilly Disobedient,” Extra, June 3, 2010. During the summer of 2010, Toronto‟s premier gay magazine Extra expounded criticisms such as these attacking the Toronto Pride Committee, which oversees Toronto‟s annual gay pride parade. The issues at stake: censorship and freedom of speech. During the spring of 2010, a gay political group entitled “Queers Against Israeli Apartheid” (QAIA) sought permission to march under this name in the Toronto gay pride parade, one of Toronto‟s largest annual events. Sensing controversy, Pride Toronto deliberated whether to allow QAIA to march.
