Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ureses f Bntisn Lib^arv o ' Political a n d E c o o ' «rtMt S c ie ,v ’f! \ZC& ABSTRACT Japan’s imperial history and its narrow self-interested post-WW II policies caused much animosity in Eastern Asia, yet its improved relations in the region from the 1980s onwards, even when assessed from a critical perspective, demand scholarly attention. This dissertation finds improved relations a result of Japan legitimating its regional hegemony. The critical theories of Gramsci (1937) and Habermas (1976) applied within intemtional relations suggest legitimation of hegemonic power at the international level only occurs when providing ‘global public goods’—defined metaphorically with the UNDP’s modification of Kindleberger’s (1986) work—such that post colonial states achieve rapid economic development to close the rich-poor gap as understood by Strange (1950). Analogous to the enabling notion of Sen’s (1974) “positive freedoms,” such ‘public goods’ are needed by states to enable nationalist projects of development, and as such their delivery is seen by Murakami (1996) as the responsibility of hegemonic powers of the day. In order to assess ‘global public goods’ the dissertation deploys Susan Strange’s (1988a) framework of ‘structural power.’ Within the knowledge structure, it is shown that Japanese Prime Minister Fukuda’s 1977 doctrine successfully guided policy towards improving regional relations in Eastern Asia. On the economic side, the Fukuda Doctrine provided ‘global public goods’ in knowledge by deploying Japan’s own experience of ‘developmentalism’ for the Eastern Asian region thus countering neo-liberalism of the “Washington Consensus,” while it also assisted in the transfer of appropriate and absorbable technology. The provision of ‘global public goods’ over the 1980s put Eastern Asia on course to catch-up with industrialised nations as Japanese firms, aided by a rising yen, went on to invest in the region. These firms began to transfer production bases from Japan, such that by the end of the 1990s each of these post colonial states saw their manufactured exports leading to economic growth rates that put them on a path to catch-up to Japan and other industrialised nations in time. In military security terms, Japan continued its pacific and defensive military posture thus calming a volatile region to enable economic development. Tokyo also pushed for collective regional security, while tacitly supporting the upgrading of post colonial Eastern Asia’s own defence capabilities. The implications of the dissertation are that Japan’s success in improving its regional relations places it in the international system as a responsible self-interested power to be emulated by other powers interested in a peaceful world, thus contributing to scholarship in international relations, development and history. Consequently, modern readers have tended to focus on how the Victorians identified themselves with slavery’s abolition and either denied their past involvement with slavery or imagined that slave past as insurmountably distant. “Willing Slaves: The Victorian Novel and the Afterlife of British Slavery” argues, however, that colonial slavery survived in the Victorian novel in a paradoxical form that I term “willing slavery.” A wide range of Victorian novelists grappled with memories of Britain’s slave past in ways difficult for modern readers to recognize because their fiction represented slaves as figures whose bondage might seem, counterintuitively, self-willed. Nineteenth-century Britons produced fictions of “willing slavery” to work through the contradictions inherent to nineteenth-century individualism. As a fictional subject imagined to take pleasure in her own subjection, the willing slave represented a paradoxical figure whose most willful act was to give up her individuality in order to maintain cherished emotional bonds. This figure should strike modern readers as a contradiction in terms, at odds with the violence and dehumanization of chattel slavery. But for many significant Victorian writers, willing slavery was a way of bypassing contradictions still familiar to us today: the Victorian individualist was meant to be atomistic yet sympathetic, possessive yet sheltered from market exchange, a monad most at home within the collective unit of the family.

That in itself Ttells us that India possesses a unique geography while also being intrinsi- cally linked to the larger continent, Asia. These two impulses, a pull toward engagement as part of a larger whole and a push to be apart due to a unique ge- ography, have influenced India’s history and behavior through the ages and have determined the nature of her engagement with the world. Geography matters because it has consequences for policy, worldviews, and history. The “big geography” of Eurasia, to which the Indian subcontinent is at- tached, divides that landmass into a series of roughly parallel ecological zones, determined largely by latitude, ranging from tropical forest in the south to northern tundra. In between these extremes, are temperate woodlands and grasslands, desert-steppe, forest-steppe, the forest, and more open taiga. The zone of mixed grassland and woodland was the ecological niche for settled ag- riculture to develop in two areas—in southwest Asia, from the Nile valley to the Indus valley, and in southeast Asia including China—where civilizations, states, and empires grew. Of the two, its geography enabled southwest Asia to communicate easily. Throughout history, from the Nile to the Indus and later the Ganga, exchanges, migrations, and change were the rule with civilizations growing and developing in contact with one another even though they were separate geographically.1 The topography of the Indian subcontinent is open on three sides: the west, south, and east and is blocked off to the north by the Himalayan range.

The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. Such misconduct in scientific research must not be allowed since it goes against the essential qualities of science to create new knowledge through accumulated searches for truth. Misconduct also undermines public trust in science and hinders scientific progress. Following the approval of the Proper Counteractions against Research Misconduct by CSTP in February 2006, CSTP revised the Countermeasures against Misconduct in Research Activities by the Competitive Research Fund (agreement in the Liaison Committee of Ministries and Agencies Concerned with Competitive Funding) in November 2006 to stipulate measures for FFP in research. Thereafter, the establishment of guidelines, reflection in application guidelines, and other measures were promoted among the related ministries and agencies. MEXT established a special committee on research misconduct under CST. In August 2006, the committee finalized guidelines on the systems and rules to be formulated by MEXT, funding agencies, and other research organizations such as universities. The guidelines requested them to implement approaches to misconduct, including establishment of a reception desk for accusations, investigation systems, and formulation of provisions related to the above-stated issues; MEXT established a reception desk for accusations within the ministry in November 2006. In December 2006, MAFF also finalized such guidelines on actions for misconduct in research, requested related organizations to implement approaches to misconduct, and established a reception desk for accusations.

Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan.

  • For My Short Witty Poems and for My Humorous Poems
    Dear (I hope) Reader, A note from the poet: I'm probably best known (or unknown) for my short witty poems and for my humorous poems. None of the following poems are short, and most are not particularly witty or humorous, nor are they particularly rich in lyricism, image or "telling details" -- in fact, they are rather abstract, and have on occasion been praised or dismissed as "not poetry, but philosophical essays or sermons"; they are difficult, chunky with unpoeticized thought processes, perhaps arrogant and pontifical and preachy. Perhaps most are unpublishable (except here) -- though a few of them have been published. But they are the poems (of my own, that is) that please me most and seem to me, for all their faults, to do best what I want to do as a poet, something I have always felt needed doing and that few others seemed to be doing. These are the poems for which I'd most like to be remembered and the poems I feel others might find most valuable, though requiring a bit more work than my other poems. I won't try to explain what it is I want these poems to do, but hope that you'll read some of them and come to your own conclusions. Let me know what you think.
