They are oonsidered in the Introduotion in the light of reoent definitions of the narrative strip, a medium in whioh Hogarth was a oonsiderable innovator. The first six ~hapters oonsist of an analysis of each of the pic- tures in Marriage ~ la Mode. The analysis was undertaken as a means of exploring the nature of Hogarth's imagination and to disoover how ooherent a work the series is. There is an emphasis on oharaoterization and setting because Hogarth himself chose to isolate character as a feature in the subscription ticket to Marriage ~ la Mode.

  • The Clothes of an Unremarkable Woman in the Seventeenth Century
‘Cutting One’s Coat According to One’s Cloth’: the Clothes of an Unremarkable Woman in the Seventeenth Century Barbara Allison SUMMARY Several projects to transcribe the probate documents of Oxfordshire have given local historians the opportunity to study a variety of aspects of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century life. This article looks at one aspect revealed by these documents – women’s clothing. It examines the women who made bequests of clothes and tries to discover what a yeoman’s widow might have worn, based on a detailed inventory of 1631, that of Elizabeth Temple. robate documents provide one of the most important sources of information about the lives Pof people in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, making it possible to examine their housing and furniture, their trades, agriculture, and clothing, as well as their family and business relationships, and to build up a picture of life in towns and villages.1 A number of projects to transcribe the probate documents for the market towns in Oxfordshire have been undertaken. Those for Thame, Woodstock, Chipping Norton, Burford, Banbury, and Bicester have been transcribed, and those for Deddington and Henley are in progress.2 These projects will provide local historians in the county with an invaluable source of information for the early modern period. This study looks at the evidence for women’s clothing in the transcripts for the parishes of the West Oxfordshire market towns of Burford, Chipping Norton, and Woodstock. The documents can help to answer specific questions about the items of clothing ‘ordinary’ women wore, the fabrics and colours used, and whether these changed during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The average price was $23,692 and median was $15,000. The RNA rate was a notably low 16.4%. Topping the day=s trade Saturday was hip 1913, a colt from the first crop of Mo Town purchased by agent Davant Latham for $185,000.
