Such has been my experience with Riverdance. Sitting in stuffed rooms in Sydney or Seattle or stretched on soft settees in say, Stockholm, I have been asked an amazing array of questions. Over the thirteen years of the life of this show I have been rendered mute by questions such as (in London): ‘how many pairs of tights does Riverdance go through in an evening?’. That one gave me some pause for thought, but not as much as the question I was asked in Tokyo when we first went there. Through an interpreter a Japanese journalist probingly inquired if I felt that the album Ó Ríada sa Gaiety was an important influence in changing the course of Irish traditional music. These kinds of questions have demonstrated to me over the years the variety of responses that people have to what was actually the same musical or theatrical experience. To progress a bit further on the theme of artistic intent versus audience response—in France I recall a press conference where a few journalists were pushing me to interpret Riverdance as an Irish Nationalistic cultural response to years of British domination.

    This Irish folk song was written by Pete St. John, and is living proof that folk tunes need not be hundreds of years old to become near and dear to the heart of a nation. This number has become quite important to the Irish in remembering their heritage. In fact, this tune has been well covered not only by folk singers, but reggae, punk, country, and even psychedelic music groups, which is significant seeing as how the song was only written in the 1970's. The most successful recording was made in 1983 by Patrick 'Paddy' Reilly, but it was originally recorded by Danny Doyle in 1979, and it has become a popular sports anthem for Irish sports supporters and fans of the Celtic Football Club. "Fields of Athenry" is a tune about a fictional character who is from Athenry in County Galway, Ireland, who has been convicted sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay, Australia because he stole food to feed his starving family. The song is set between 1845 and 1850, during the Great Irish Famine.     The Mostly Celtic Songbook Mostly Celtic Songbook 2 Introduction After sitting in on some of the Tuesday evening open jam sessions at C.B. Hannegan’s in Los Gatos, and trying to sing along but not remembering the lyrics, it seemed like a good idea to compile a songbook that we could all share. After one or two pints and a few encouraging words from Tony Becker, the idea became a project. So, here it is. It’s not by any stretch of the imagination complete, but it does contain many of the Celtic traditional songs1) that are played, along with some popular country and folk songs. The songs included here are the ones played most frequently, and some I added on my own. In some cases, I took the liberty of editing some of the traditional lyrics for readability, especially the lyrics I got from the Web, and adding or changing a few chords, since many of the songs exist in several different versions anyway. Some of the song titles are listed without the leading “The” and “A” in the index, to make it easier to find them. The chords are written in Nashville notation (well, sort of), so transposing is a piece of cake. For example, the root chord is represented as a 1, and the other chords are numbered according to their relationship to the root chord. So, in the key of C, a C chord is 1, an Am chord is 6m, an F chord is 4, a G7 is 57, and so on. Chord numbering in relative minor keys is arbitrarily based on the root of the corresponding major key, so a Dm is 6m, where F is 1.

Given the article’s broad scope and limited space, detailed theoretical elaboration and extensive ex- amination of discursive data will not be possible.1 Rather, the article offers a tentative overview of how these tensions have been manifest- ed in Irish print and broadcast media, and of how they have evinced fantasies and anxieties about sporting achievement as indicative of collective national achievement. The popularized notion of diaspora in Irish society in the 1990s facilitated the transformation of Ireland’s history of emigration into a narrative of emigrant success in the global economy.
