Forthcoming Projects and Events

We are excited to once again be welcoming the fantastic musicians and dancers of Kakasitsi. The drummers have visited the county on numerous occasions on previous tours and have received fabulous feedback from host schools for the quality of their educational performances and workshops. In 2019, the 6 drummers and dancers of Kakasitsi will be joined by Mbilou a Bwiti Nganga (ceremony leader) from Gabon. Typically a workshop will feature an educational performance of 45-60 minutes featuring the amazing and unusual acoustic instruments played by Mbilou such as the Mungongo mouthbow and the Ngoma-Ngombi (the sacred harp that speaks the voice of the ancestors) and an introductory explanation to the traditional ceremonies he performs. Musically, Mbilou will be backed by the Kakatsitsi Drummers and there will be opportunities for the children to learn about African drums rhythms, chants and dances with audience participation a regular feature. This will be following by drumming and dance workshops by the Kakasitsi performers for the students.

As well as funding the travel and accommodation costs for the visiting groups, each workshop will be subsidised by the Cornwall Music Education Hub as part of its support for schools. Therefore the actual cost to schools, or home educated groups, will be reduced by £100 for a full day workshop and by £50 for a half day workshop. Workshop costs to schools – subsidised rate Full Day - £400 Morning - £300 Afternoon- £200 The following dates are currently available to book: June - 18th AM (W Cornwall), 26th AM (Falmouth area), 28th PM (N Cornwall)

If you are interested in hosting a visit by these fantastic musicians and dancers, please contact the CMEH office - [email protected], stating your preference for a half day or full day and preferred day/date.

Support for Schools

North Cornwall School Engagement On Friday 29th March, Georgina Bridle organised a primary music workshop day at Sir James Smith's School. Children from Primary, St Breward, and Otterham all gathered in the music department of Sir James Smiths for a day of music workshops. The day began with some warm up songs, and then the children went off into groups to experience playing brass instruments, woodwind instruments, and string instruments. There were numerous instruments for the children to try including the bassoon, trombone, & double bass! The instrument sessions were led by instrumental teachers who provide lessons at Sir James Smiths School.

After lunch the children were treated to a concert performed by children of Sir James Smiths school, along with pupils from the primary schools who had offered to perform some solos! It was a real showcase of talent that hopefully inspired some of the young people to take up an instrument themselves. Mr Sykes, head of music at Sir James Smiths, was delighted with how the day went and said it was fabulous seeing the primary school children engaging with the various instruments. Teachers from the primary schools commented on how nice it was for the children to see, hear, and have a go themselves on real instruments as this is rarely possible in their own schools.

Around the world in Penwith KS1 and Reception children in Penwith came together to produce a wonderful concert at St Mary’s CE church on 1st April. They entertained a packed audience with their ‘Around The World ‘event, with schools all performing together and each taking their own solo slot.

Thank you to everyone who took part to make it such a success! Christine would like to say a huge ‘well done’ to St Erth, St Marys CE, St Maddern’s, Mousehole, St Hilary, , Alverton, Trythall and Nancledra and a big thank you to all the teachers!

KS1 Project with Wheal Martyn

On Wednesday 13th February KS1 pupils from Biscovey Infants, Bugle School, St-Stephen Churchtown Academy, and Treverbyn Academy visited Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum. In the weeks leading up to this the children had been preparing songs to perform with the engagement team teachers, Anna Minear and Phil Montgomery-Smith.

The morning was spent carrying out some workshops provided by the museum so that the children could learn about the local history & in the afternoon all the children came together to perform. In total around 120 pupils gathered and performed together the songs that every school had learnt. In addition to this each school performed their own song. Visitors to the museum stopped to listen as the children performed so beautifully. A favourite of the children was the song 'Digging the Garden' - which involved some fun actions.

Teachers of the children commented on how lovely it was seeing the children enjoying performing the songs, and also how much the children had enjoyed the weekly sessions with Phil & Anna.

Support for Schools

Funding for whole class instrumental lessons

Would you like your students to try out learning an instrument for free?

The Hub is able to offer grants to schools to fund a music specialist to deliver whole class instrumental lessons. The grants are available to fund a 12 week programme called First Access which aims to introduce students (and their teacher!) in Key Stages 1-3 to learning an instrument.

The programme consists of:  An initial planning meeting with the classroom teacher and music leader  10 weekly 45 minute whole class lessons (students should learn the same instrument each week)  A review meeting with the classroom teacher and music leader

The grants are available for any classes who have not previously benefitted from the scheme (schools can access for more than one class). Schools choose the deliverer for the sessions and also source their own instruments. The Hub can help with this as we have a list of teachers/organisations who are able to deliver First Access and also sets of instruments which can be hired at the subsidised rate of £70 per set per term.

Further information about First Access can be found at http://cornwallmusiceducationhub.org/first-access/

Recent Hub supported and Partner Projects

WILD Young Parents drumming project for young mums Here at WILD Young Parents Project we were delighted to be awarded funding by the Department for Women and Equalities to celebrate the centenary of the women’s vote. We decided to host an event on International Women’s Day, celebrating inspirational women, democracy and encouraging engagement with politics. As part of the event we were lucky enough to be able to access some Taiko Drums from the Cornwall Music Education Hub to practice for an empowering performance by the young mums currently in our service.

For 3 months prior to the event, music workers Matthew Thomason and Jo Alleyne attended around 30 WILD groups, teaching each group of young mums different rhythms on the drums. At the event the young mums came together for the first time as a large ensemble and performed an inspiring (and incredibly loud) improvisation piece using the various beats they had learned at group. The event was a great success and it was covered by BBC Spotlight as well as BBC Radio Cornwall, but more importantly it was an opportunity for the children to see their mothers doing something very powerful and inspiring. Students/audience members were able to register to vote and learn more about the history of the Suffragette/Suffragist movement.

WILD Young Parents Project works with some of the most vulnerable families in Cornwall and you can find out more information on our website www.wildproject.org.uk Thanks to the Hub for providing us with the drums and making the event hard to miss!

IMS Prussia Cove Concerts for Schools In January, Inspiring Young Musicians, in conjunction with MusicAbility and South West Music School brought a group of talented young players aged 13-19 from across Devon and Cornwall to work with four musicians from IMS Prussia Cove. A weekend of intensive chamber music coaching at the Prussia Cove residential was followed by a morning of concerts in primary schools and a public concert at St Mary’s Church in Penzance. The musicians split into small groups to visit 8 local primary schools. These schools had all been provided with teaching resources and short films produced by Patrick Bailey prior to the event to enhance the children’s enjoyment of the performances.

Opera Project

Shelley Jeffery and Nicola Hosking have been working on a project called 'Create and Sing Carmen' with a number of Primary Schools in the Launceston Area. In partnership with the Music Hub and Launceston College, they have delivered school-based sessions to children mainly from Years 4, 5 and 6. Each project has involved three of the local primary schools and has culminated in a final performance where the three schools join together to perform to parents and friends. ‘Create and Sing Carmen’ was developed by the Royal Opera House to make opera accessible to school children through a series of sessions culminating in a final performance. The original opera was adapted and includes special arrangements of extracts from the score. Whilst working on this project, children develop their understanding of opera, their ability to tell stories through song as well as their performance and acting skills. Each project has culminated in a performance on the lovely stage of Launceston Town Hall.

Ensemble update Cornwall Youth Orchestra - Landscapes of the Mind One of Cornwall Music Education Hub’s county orchestras, the Cornwall Youth Orchestra, held two concerts in Truro Cathedral on Thursday 11th (Dementia-friendly informal concert) and Friday 12th of April (public concert).

The concert was a culmination of the players’ hard work over the year playing transformational music by Martin Riley, Mendelssohn, Anna Clynne, and Sibelius conducted by Tim Boulton. The Cornwall Youth Orchestra took the audience on a journey of emotion, with their eclectic mix of pieces.

Cornwall Youth Wind Orchestra - Easter Concert

One of the Hub’s county orchestras, the Cornwall Youth Wind Orchestra, held their Easter Concert at Truro Cathedral on Saturday 14th April. The concert was a culmination of the players’ hard work over the year, playing a vibrant and engaging range of pieces which wowed audiences especially for their performance of Encore by Yo Goto which received a standing ovation. This concert also marked the first Easter Concert conducted by Sara Munns who was handed the baton at last years concert by Janet Elston who played in the evenings concert. A note from the conductor: To say that this year has flown by is a huge understatement. It has been a real privilege to work alongside such wonderful young musicians and, of course, such brilliant and supportive staff. I clearly remember 12-year-old me attending the first ever CYWO rehearsal with my borrowed trumpet, not knowing anyone, wondering if I was up to the job! Happy memories and so many enduring friendships were built from that point onward. So to now, filling the role as director of CYWO has been a most enjoyable challenge.
