Summer Term 2019 Cornwall Music Education Hub Update Welcome to the Summer 2019 Newsletter! The Spring term was a busy time for us at the Cornwall Music Education Hub with our annual Songfest concerts. Over 1000 students from 65 schools across Cornwall sang as part of massed choir at 8 different concerts from Penzance to Plymouth. We hope you enjoy the photos and we look forward to seeing you at our forthcoming events! About the Cornwall Music Education Hub The Cornwall Music Education Hub, a partnership of organisations led by Cornwall Council, is funded by the Department for Education, through Arts Council England, to support schools across Cornwall with their music education. The Cornwall Music Education Hub does not deliver instrumental tuition but helps children and young people to engage with inspiring musical learning through a variety of ways such as projects, workshops, events, ensembles and choirs, training for school staff, funding for whole class instrumental teaching, subsidies for lessons and a large stock of instruments available to hire. For information about how the Hub can support you, visit our website: www.cornwallmusiceducationhub.org or email [email protected] Cornwall Music Education Hub Chy Trevail, Room North 2, Beacon Technology Park, Dunmere Road Bodmin PL31 2FR. The drummers have visited the county on numerous occasions on previous tours and have received fabulous feedback from host schools for the quality of their educational performances and workshops. In 2019, the 6 drummers and dancers of Kakasitsi will be joined by Mbilou a Bwiti Nganga (ceremony leader) from Gabon. Typically a workshop will feature an educational performance of 45-60 minutes featuring the amazing and unusual acoustic instruments played by Mbilou such as the Mungongo mouthbow and the Ngoma-Ngombi (the sacred harp that speaks the voice of the ancestors) and an introductory explanation to the traditional ceremonies he performs. Musically, Mbilou will be backed by the Kakatsitsi Drummers and there will be opportunities for the children to learn about African drums rhythms, chants and dances with audience participation a regular feature. This will be following by drumming and dance workshops by the Kakasitsi performers for the students. As well as funding the travel and accommodation costs for the visiting groups, each workshop will be subsidised by the Cornwall Music Education Hub as part of its support for schools. Therefore the actual cost to schools, or home educated groups, will be reduced by £100 for a full day workshop and by £50 for a half day workshop. Workshop costs to schools – subsidised rate Full Day - £400 Morning - £300 Afternoon- £200 The following dates are currently available to book: June - 18th AM (W Cornwall), 26th AM (Falmouth area), 28th PM (N Cornwall) If you are interested in hosting a visit by these fantastic musicians and dancers, please contact the CMEH office - [email protected], stating your preference for a half day or full day and preferred day/date. The concert is in association with the Cornwall Regimental Museum and will feature items with a military theme. In addition to the children performing there will be items from Lostwithiel Junior Band. The concert is free of charge and will last about an hour. All welcome to come along and support. 3 Support for Schools North Cornwall School Engagement On Friday 29th March, Georgina Bridle organised a primary music workshop day at Sir James Smith's School. Children from Camelford Primary, St Breward, and Otterham all gathered in the music department of Sir James Smiths for a day of music workshops. The day began with some warm up songs, and then the children went off into groups to experience playing brass instruments, woodwind instruments, and string instruments. There were numerous instruments for the children to try including the bassoon, trombone, & double bass! The instrument sessions were led by instrumental teachers who provide lessons at Sir James Smiths School. After lunch the children were treated to a concert performed by children of Sir James Smiths school, along with pupils from the primary schools who had offered to perform some solos! It was a real showcase of talent that hopefully inspired some of the young people to take up an instrument themselves. Mr Sykes, head of music at Sir James Smiths, was delighted with how the day went and said it was fabulous seeing the primary school children engaging with the various instruments. Teachers from the primary schools commented on how nice it was for the children to see, hear, and have a go themselves on real instruments as this is rarely possible in their own schools. The Hub’s School Engagement Lead for North Cornwall is Georgina Bridle of the Cornwall Music Service Trust [email protected] Around the world in Penwith KS1 and Reception children in Penwith came together to produce a wonderful concert at St Mary’s CE church on 1st April. They entertained a packed audience with their ‘Around The World ‘event, with schools all performing together and each taking their own solo slot. Thank you to everyone who took part to make it such a success! Christine would like to say a huge ‘well done’ to St Erth, St Marys CE, St Maddern’s, Mousehole, St Hilary, Newlyn, Alverton, Trythall and Nancledra and a big thank you to all the teachers! In the weeks leading up to this the children had been preparing songs to perform with the engagement team teachers, Anna Minear and Phil Montgomery-Smith. The morning was spent carrying out some workshops provided by the museum so that the children could learn about the local history & in the afternoon all the children came together to perform. In total around 120 pupils gathered and performed together the songs that every school had learnt. In addition to this each school performed their own song. Visitors to the museum stopped to listen as the children performed so beautifully. A favourite of the children was the song 'Digging the Garden' - which involved some fun actions. Teachers of the children commented on how lovely it was seeing the children enjoying performing the songs, and also how much the children had enjoyed the weekly sessions with Phil & Anna.
